William Brickel’s works are the result of imagination, recalled memories, and observations of everyday situations. His compositions take shape rapidly, shifting and morphing during their creation; they are the product of subconscious and conscious decisions. The human figure is a recurrent and central concern in William Brickel’s practice, providing a means to examine the contemporary status of the self, the other, and how the two may exist together. Brickel’s subjects consider interiority, self-possession, alienation, and isolation. William Brickel lives and works in London, UK. William Brickels work is currently on view in myselves, a group exhibition curated by Joshua Friedman, which features over twenty-five contemporary artists who use medium as a lens to examine the ways in which identity is structured or fabricated. With an eye to the physical, social, and historical properties of their chosen media, these emerging and established artists portray the self in pieces—as fragments that may accumulate and amalgamate but never entirely cohere. Identity can be as fluid as a watercolor in which one color bleeds into another; as fractured as a collage composed of ripped strips of paper; as multilayered as a painting that has been built up lovingly and laboriously over the passage of time. It is through the physicality of medium that the works on view confront the myth of selfhood’s unchanging rigidity and turn instead to its fertile nebulousness—looking beyond mind over matter, toward matters of the mind. Through housing, food, and care. 1) Kermit prepping the container, with dog friends Roxie and Roller never far. 2) Ian painting boxes while Sarah added some simple flowers to offer a frame to the canvas, paint sets made available to residents to add their own images. 3) Rob gathering bouquet from our pollinator meadow, spending time near the mural, maybe getting interested! 4) workshop with Brian Campbell on how to turn grass lawns into pollinator paradise with Paula and George our gardeners, mural growing in the background with a Sarah bee and an Ian flower - collection of expressions growing! 5) and then one day Rob paints the most epic cloud scene to tie it all together! 6) and we keep having workshops to learn together too, this one with Marika from Environmental Youth Alliance on wild bees, our whole team present and fascinated! 7) keep growing the medicine to share with our elders in community - tobacco and mullein here. 8) keep saving the seeds to share on the knowledge and support more gardens, more blooms, more pride and diversity. 9) and then today this tree and wild hive appears, by another resident, Bill, of the modular housing we are so grateful to work alongside! So much love for the folks who work and live here at Chartrand Place, the staff have also made a rainbow mural on their storage container, and Kermit also added polka dots to our hinges! This is what can happen when people have a home to call their own, a place to breathe and rest, to share and create. When we see people struggling, street entrenched, without a home, let’s start to imagine what it could mean to support homes for all, to actually end homelessness. Today was a fun day for me. I had a bit of a play with some of the strongman gear at @wolfpack_powerlifting It was nice to do something a bit different and have a bit of fun. I’ve only done log press and atlas stones (from @spartan_atlas_stones ) once before, in 2017, and then I got a 45KG log press and a 70KG Stone. After a sleepless week of completing the finishing touches and driving the portrait 10 hours south to Sydney to be photographed and framed, I am pleased to say that ‘Bruce Pascoe- Dark Emu’ was finally completed- signed, sealed and delivered! It has been such an incredible and eye opening journey meeting Bruce and learning about Indigenous ways of approaching sustainable growing in this country. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. The sun has always been a key element of Rodrigue’s art. It first appeared in the early landscapes and Cajun series paintings as a light in the distance, symbolizing hope for a brighter tomorrow. Soon after, the sun became more abstracted, and took the form of swirls of yellow and gold. Then, in 2002, when Rodrigue began his Hurricane series, the swirl became an even stronger signature theme in his work, representing the energy and power of these massive storms. The swirl that had once enlivened his landscapes now had grown to encompass the entire canvas as its sole subject. Rodrigue was fascinated by the shape, and he continued to use the swirl as a prominent motif for the rest of his life. As with his Cajun works, George Rodrigue’s titles described a scene in the simplest of terms. The paintings themselves hold narratives, and their titles often state the obvious. However, the Blue Dog is always engulfed in mystery, and the titles often became an important part of the intrigue, not only shedding light on the artist’s intent, but forcing us to look at the art, and the world in a different way. Matthias Weischer’s solo exhibition ‘Bühne’ will be on view at the @drentsmuseumassen, the Netherlands, from November 1, 2020 until March 28, 2021. Weischer’s work plays on our sense of space. Social Distancing Stories #8 Death. When preparing the slides for this Sundays talk on Kyrgyzstan, I read through my diary and realised the word death appears too often. But the Kyrgyz winter, like the Himalayan winter, is brutal. Death seemed to linger in every nook and cranny if you were an animal in Kyrgyzstan. Even wolves, at the top of the food chain here, would fall to the gun of a Kyrgyz who could claim US$160 reward from the Kyrgyz government. Surviving a near polar winter was no easy task here if you were not a human. Even the human had big challenges to overcome but at least had a warm home to return to at the end of a day’s struggle. But the animals stayed out. Day and night. Through sun, wind, snow and predators, they battled it out in the frigid outdoors. To ensure they remained standing in the face of death. No matter how close a friend or how precious an offspring, the passing of a near and dear one only seemed to increase their zest for life rather than break their will to live. Possibly every animal in this land had seen death up close and that, is possibly why they built up their resilience — to make sure they see the spring at the end of every winter. For even tears of grief would freeze in this environment. Even crying is possibly best done in spring when the whole land melts and cries for those who didn’t make it through the bitter winter. ----------- I will be sharing this image and quite a few more when I talk about the winter in Kyrgyzstan this coming Sunday. Who doesn’t love a good story?! Our friend @marjorievellart is really good at sharing little snippets full of art history and curious facts. *We always feel a bit smarter after reading her. :) __ #repost @marjorievellart André Derain draws on an established tradition in modern French art : finding artistic subject matter in places of entertainment in Paris. His painting shows a dancer from the restaurant and night club Le rat mort (The Dead Rat), which was also one of French artist, Toulouse-Lautrec’s regular haunts, years before. Half undressed, the dancer sits with her stockinged legs crossed, slumped on what looks like a bed as she looks directly out at us. Derain works with composition, colours and lines in a rather sophisticated manner. Take a close look at the woman’s hands. One hand is morbidly larger and exaggerated in contrast with her other hand and yet, it still seems exactly right in the picture, giving it a sense of freshness and wildness. The painting is a key work from Derain’s ‘Fauvist’ period (from the French, Le fauve: the wild ones). It has its origins in a summer spent with the somewhat older fellow artist Henri Matisse in 1905 in the town of Collioure in the south of France. Here, they both experimented with using colours in new ways, taking them beyond a purely descriptive function, such as showing us that the sea is blue. Here, colours are also used to describe emotional states. On a personal note, I feel she represents all of us, patiently waiting to get back into life, post COVID. #WORKOFTHEWEEK Ben Nicholson, 1921 – circa 1923 (Cortivallo, Lugano), 1921-3 How do artists picture the world outside? Between 1920 and 1922 Ben Nicholson, with his wife, Winifred, spent the winters in a villa overlooking Lake Lugano, Switzerland. Cortivallo, the subject of this painting, was a nearby village. The two artists were beginning to explore the relationship between landscape and still life, and their pared back figurative styles began to dissolve the boundaries between interior and exterior worlds. The picture was probably painted indoors from a sketch made outdoors, creating a tension between the real world of the viewer and the world depicted beyond.
