“Smoke em, if you got em.” There’s a few times in which our smoker went out or we forgot our smoker back home and we are an hour away and those inspections were memorable... because they were horrible. Bees have an amazing sense of smell and they also use smell to communicate. We use smoke to help our girls associate the smell of intrusion with the smell of smoke (hopefully when we are suited up before hand) and not the smell of us as...well, us. With our perfumes, sweat, smelly armpits—both good and bad—and such, the last thing you want is for your bees to associate your smell with danger, invasion, intrusion or disturbance. Because once they smell it, there’s no undoing that. The other reason we use smoke is because bees communicate through scent. And their alarm pheromone smells like bananas. Using smoke keeps your girls from smelling bananas and going bananas. Essentially like putting a hand over their mouths and calmly whispering to them “shhhhh.” Less panic, less stings, less stress for us and the bees which results in more patience, slower movements and more care given while doing an inspection. Da ist das TopSecret Projekt 🙌🏻 Zum Geburtstag meiner Mama gabs ein #Wildbienenhotel - Das Haus selbst habe ich aus Wildkirsche gebaut und die Füllung besteht aus Bambus, Schilf, Birke und aus einem Teil von @flohs_grillscheune Alter Scheune 😜 - Die Füllung soll hauptsächlich Wildbienen ansprechen und wurde nach ausgiebiger Recherche bei @nabu ausgewählt und verarbeitet. - Die Hotels die man im Baumarkt, etc. bekommt sind leider zu 90% nicht zu gebrauchen, wer also darüber nachdenkt auch so ein Teil aufzustellen - informiert euch vorher, sonst habt weder ihr noch die Insekten spass daran.... - Ich bin gespannt wer da nächstes Jahr so alles einzieht 😉🐝 - Vielleicht noch was zum Projekt: ▶️Ich kann jetzt auch Dachdecker 😜 Grüße an die Flos ▶️Schnellzement wird ziemlich schnell fest und lässt sich nur mäßig gut wieder entfernen... ▶️Abgesehn von der durchstoßenen Rückwand, die ich wieder flicken konnte, war ich auch mit dem Verleimen des Korpus etwas voreilig... ▶️Den 60° Winkel fürs Dach an der rechten Seite könnte ich noch auf der TKS schneiden... Les canyes tallades, anomenades hotels, serveixen per posar-hi els ous i passar-hi el cicle anual. Els hotels estan distribuïts per tota la finca. En uns dies, les òsmies, sortiran dels nius i arribaran a les flors dels nostres perers. Aquests insectes són el millor pol•linitzador natural que hi ha en termes d’ecològic. ⠀⠀⠀ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ⠀⠀ 🐝 Las osmias (abejas salvajes), que son un elemento muy importante en la plantación, empiezan a salir de su período de hibernación durante estos días. Las cañas cortadas, que también se les llama hoteles, sirven para que estas pongan los huevos y pasar ahí su ciclo anual. Los hoteles están distribuidos por toda la finca. En unos días, las osmias, saldrán de su nido y llegaran a las flores de nuestros perales. Estos insectos son el mejor polinizador natural que hay en términos ecológico. ⠀⠀⠀ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ⠀⠀ 🐝 “Osmias” or wild bees, which are a very important element in the plantation, begin to leave their hibernation period during these days. . So how did my bumblebee season end? Well pretty good I must say. Ive seen a lot of bumblebees in my garden since the first queens arrived in the spring. I managed to persuade a common carder bee (bombus pascuorum) queen to nest in one of my bumblebee boxes. (picture 1) Previous colonies where destroyed by the bumblebee wax moth. So I bought a bumblebee door to keep the wax moth out, but you have to learn the bumblebees how to use it. And bumblebees being very smart they picked up very quickly (motion picture 🎥) How does a bumblebee nest look like when they are all gone? The first thing the queen did was making a small kinda mountain of the materials I put there. Some moss and isolation material. Its engineerd very well. On the top of the picture you see some of the black entry (picture 2) When lifting the top a clear sight of the nest is revealed. Its rather messy with no structure. Totally different than a honeybee hive. Small urns everwhere (picture 3) I estimate that the colony containted 100/125 bumbles. In some of the urns there are even some small dead bumblebees workers (picture 4) But the best thing about this nest is the absence of intruders. The colony has done its job: bringing up new queens for next spring. [POSEZ VOS QUESTIONS ] On nous a posé une question super intéressante ce vendredi : @wafa_lh_ nous questionne : Pourquoi est-il dangereux d’installer des ruches en ville ? On vous explique ! . . Historiquement les abeilles à miel, qui vivent en colonie (près de 50 000 abeilles par ruche) on toujours vécu en zones rurales. Elles profitent ainsi de ressources conséquentes avec des champs agricoles à perte de vue. Les abeilles sauvages, qui elles ne piquent pas, ne font pas de miel et vivent de manière solitaire dans des abris trouvés naturellement en ville, profitent des ressources suffisantes qu’elles trouvent en milieu urbain. En déménageant les ruches en ville on déséquilibre cette faune fragile : plus d’abeilles pour moins de ressources et naturellement on crée un conflit entre abeilles à miel et abeilles solitaires. Les abeilles sauvages (en plus petite quantité) se font chasser par les abeilles à miel ! Alors finalement, déménager les ruches en ville n’est pas la solution. Aujourd’hui il faut revoir nos méthodes agricoles de production (tendre vers des solutions écologiques) et arrêter les pesticides. Les abeilles à miel pourront ainsi jouer leur rôle extraordinaire de pollinisation. All it takes is laying them out for 5 or 10 minutes in the hot sun and the old soiled comb just pops right out of the foundation cells! 🐝 Encontré esta foto del 2014 🐝 Recuerdo que encontré una abeja tomando agua del grifo de mi cocina. Algo en ese momento me hizo clic y sentí mucha curiosidad por las abejas. Decidí que quería dedicar mi último año de la carrera de DI a investigarlas y diseñar algo que pudiera aportar soluciones a las problemáticas locales - globales de este campo... Creo que nunca me imaginé todo lo que me enseñarían las abejas. En estos tiempos de cambios y reflexión las he tenido muy presentes. Las abejas viven para dar y multiplicar la vida, actúan en perfecta armonía con el mundo natural, tienen canales perfectos de comunicación y buscan siempre lo mejor para su colmena. Its a great day for a honey harvest! This is a full frame of honey from a hive at our bee farm. The bees collect nectar from flowers and dehydrate it by flapping their wings. When it is ready, they cap it with beautiful white wax cappings. We harvest our honey frame by frame. Raw honey never goes bad and was even found locked away in Egyptian tombs edible and unspoiled. 2020 has been an incredible honey year in our area. Meet Marisa Papetti, beekeeper extraordinaire and owner of @mariesbeeswa. 🐝 Marisa is known for her fabulous honey, which she sells online and delivers personally to local buyers. She loves to educate people about the bees and their importance in our world. She also teaches popular cheese-making classes, which she recently began offering online. 🍯 I’ve been spending quite a bit of time in the kitchen. We will be officially be releasing four new products in September. A Honey Oxymel, Ginger/Lemon Creamed Honey, Extreme Hot Honey and a Mother Honey for new moms. Bees are REALLY important – and not just honey bees but also the over 4,000 different species of Native American bees. In fact, the honey bee, remarkable as it is, doesn’t know how to pollinate a tomato or an eggplant flower, while some native bees are masters at this. 🌻🐝 Over the past 10 years, weve heard a lot about the shocking disappearance of honey bees. However, many people dont realize is that Native bees are dying off as well! Fortunately, there are some conservation superheroes on a mission to save these bees! In 2013, natural history photographer Clay Bolt set out on an adventure to meet, photograph and tell the stories of many of these beautiful, beneficial insects. Soon he came across a specimen of a rusty-patched bumble bee in a scientific collection and learned about its tragic decline. Determined to use his photography to create more awareness about the insects demise, Clay worked with partners to create a film, which he then shared across the country on behalf of the bee, from small venues to a rare opportunity to present it on Capitol Hill. In January 2017 these efforts paid off, and the rusty-patched bumble bee became the first species of native North American bee to receive protection under the Endangered Species Act. In 2019, Bolt became the first photographer to document a living Wallaces Giant Bee—the worlds largest bee, which was thought to be extinct for nearly 40 years. Clay Bolt will be at Panama Rocks for the Wild America Nature Festival on July 27 & 28. During his engaging presentation, he will discuss North America’s native bees, the important roles that they play in our lives, and let us know what we can all do to help save them. All of those orange-ish light brown taffy-looking tufts on the top of the frames are propolis! Propolis is made of tree saps and plant resins and is used by the colony to seal up cracks in the hive, strengthen the structural integrity, and to fight bacteria! . . The etymology of the word propolis is quite interesting--it derives from Ancient Greek and referred to the outskirts, or suburbs, of a city. Pro (for/in defense of) and polis (city). The sticky substance got its name because bees use the material to extend their hive and it is, quite literally, the defender of the hive.
