#icare #donmilani #agescitoscana - @agescitoscana on Instagram

Little House on the Prairie is an ever-popular series of children’s books based on the life of one Laura Ingalls Wilder. But who was Mrs. Wilder and what was her life like? And how did she go from being a pioneer to a celebrated author? Born and raised in a pioneer family, Wilder traveled quite a bit throughout her childhood, ever surrounded by nature and her three sisters and parents, whom she loved dearly. She carried these pioneer memories and the experiences she shared with her close-knit family throughout her life, a wealth of stories just waiting to be explored. As an adult, Wilder settled in Mansfield, Missouri, where she finally put pen to paper and began the Little House series. From being an active member in her community of Mansfield to butting heads with her editor of the series (who was also her daughter, Rose Wilder Lane), Wilder undoubtedly led a rich, exciting life, from start to finish. And that isn’t to say of all the tragedies her family faced along the way. Discover the trials that the Wilder family experienced and how the book series came to be. Much like the cars that reside here at Mather HQ, the building itself has quite a story to tell...⠀ ⠀ Built in 1943 originally as an American field hospital, simply named ‘Camp 232’.⠀ ⠀ A turn of events a few years down the line saw Northwick Park oversee the medical treatment and rehabilitation of German prisoners of war by the 1000. ⠀ Then, following being left unused for some years the entire park became a Polish resettlement camp. ⠀ ⠀ A quote from a remarkable lady and ex-resident who this week visited me in the place in which she grew up. ⠀ ‘Arriving at the park in 1948 was to me, aged five a true adventure, it was a happy place given our circumstances, a happy place in which we were finally safe. It was my home for fifteen years until I married, but really will always be home.’⠀ ⠀ Zosia was also able to share photographs with me of my showroom, then. ⠀ Surprise surprise my building was where the wild parties were at (mostly)🕺🏻. ⠀ It’s conversations such as the one I had here this week which remind me that people had serious guts and incredible gumption during those grief stricken times, yet still smiled, cracked on and drew positivity from their situation. ⠀ A lesson to many of us... ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ History lesson over, sorry to anyone who didn’t want to know 😘. ⠀ - @mathercollectables on Instagram

This weekend we made the hard decision to put our funky retro (even though we bought them BRAND NEW when we opened) booths into storage, and convert the space to retail display. With over 140 varieties of FTO coffee, almost as many teas, jams, jellies, pickles, sauces, rubs, and a HUGE selection of local art, handicrafts, AND books by local authors, and so much more ... Well, we realized that we needed to expand our retail while continuing to offer amazing coffee, meals and the best made from scratch baking - all of it to go in Eco-friendly compostable containers. In these covid coloured times hard decisions are made, and changes are embraced as we continue to put safety first and foremost whilst still offering our very best to you, our cherished customer!! #whatwedo #supportlocal #shoplocal #ftocoffeesuperstore #localartists #changes #togetherwegetthroughthis #fall2020 #localauthors #Flesherton #GreyHighlands #HighlandGrounds #takeout #coffee #baking #lunch #soup #sandwiches #madehere #deliciousness #karma #onestopshop #growing #wegotthis #fairtrade #organic #local #fromscratch - @highlandgrounds on Instagram

On Sunday, September 23rd, police marched in and arrested 250 Black men in South Atlanta. These men had gathered to discuss how to protect their community. Miles away, police had caught wind of the gathering and panicked at the thought of an impending retaliatory attack. They stormed the neighborhood to disarm and disable the group. A shoot-out ensued when they arrived. In the midst of the gunfire, a white police officer was killed. And just like that, the #southatlanta men were quickly rounded up and carted off for booking. It was one of many scenes of chaos and injustice unfurling across Atlanta during the race riots in 1906. This story, and the larger narrative about the Atlanta Race Riots, wasn’t included in the history curriculum of Atlanta Public Schools until 2006, one hundred years after its occurrence. And South Atlanta was #Brownsville back then. Just over 100 years later, we wanted to be sure to share it with our friends and neighbors across the city. At FCS, we’re fixated on neighboring, dignity, and development. Just as we listen to our neighbors and partners, we want to listen to what history has to tell us about South Atlanta today. #atlantahistory #atlantariot #southatlantahistory - @fcsministries on Instagram

Photo No. 1 by Katherine Jones :: A Boise monument has become a memorial for Ruth Bader Ginsburg in the wake of the Supreme Court justices recent death. With a briefing by Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who was then a law professor, Idahoan Sally Reed took a landmark case to the U.S. Supreme Court, which decided that Idaho Code’s preference in favor of males was arbitrary and unconstitutional. FRANK SCHUMAN Developed in Northeast Philadelphia’s Tacony neighborhood in the early 20th Century, Shuman’s “Sun Engine” is a poignant reminder that while humanity has been slow to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, we have certainly not lacked the technology, or foresight, to do so. On the expansive lawn between an ivy-covered house and workshop at Disston and Ditman Streets, Shuman integrated his deep knowledge of glass, optics, and convection heating to create a powerful array capable of doing actual work. Tacony was a center for technological revolution during the period between 1890 and 1920. Frank Shuman was a world famous inventor who lived at Disston and Ditman Streets. Scientific American visited this community multiple times for such innovations as the casting of the mammoth statue of William Penn and all the domework adorning Philadelphias City Hall. This project was overseen by Francis Schumann, President of the Tacony Iron and Metal Company, the uncle of the inventor. Much attention was brought to this community as a result of Shumans numerous inventions, including wire glass and a gas mask so durable it was used in World War I. Shuman also was notable for solar power, having a solar powered engine on display during sunny days between 1907 and 1909. He later oversaw the worlds first solar energy plant in Egypt which pumped 6,000 gallons of irrigation water per minute. “One thing I feel sure of,” he wrote prophetically in a 1914 Scientific American article, “is that the human race must finally utilize direct sun power or revert to barbarism.” Based on the output of his device, he reasoned that an array covering 20,250 square miles in an unpopulated portion of Africa’s Sahara Desert would produce the same amount of energy as all of the coal mined in 1909. Displaying an understanding of the social value of solar, he urged “…all far-sighted engineers and inventors to work in this direction” not only for their own profit but “the eternal welfare of the human race”. #SAWTOWNUSA #DISSTON #TACONYVSGLOBALWARMING #HISTORICALTACONY - @tacony_19135 on Instagram
