A friendly reminder and warning for those of you with kids and dogs - It is September and the start of football season, but it is also the time of year when copperheads are born. The baby snakes are born with venom and ready to defend themselves. The mama snake generally gives birth to about 8 - 10 of these critters, so if you find one there are others around. The babies will keep those greenish/yellow tips on their tails for about a year. These snakes are not generally aggressive but will bite if you are unfortunate enough to touch or step on one. Do not reach under bushes, around rocks, or even flower pots without looking first. They like damp places so beware, even under childrens toys and dog dishes! - @lr_kids on Instagram

I’m a bit late to the party but @save_the_choco is aiming to purchase and protect 23000 ha of pristine #rainforest in the #Ecuadorian #Chocó, a cradle of #biodiversity and #wilderness on the western slopes of the #Andes. This purchase would connect several isolated reserves and create a #wildlife corridor larger than 300000 ha, or about 300000 rugby fields, in a region that has lost 98% of its #forest. I remember this Nerodia!🐍What can he tell us about urban wildlife? 🤔 . Ive been going through old pictures for a paper Im finishing up and this Banded water snake (Nerodia fasciata) brought me right back to the surveys! . In fact, he actually was the last individual found during a 6 month span of surveys at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary near downtown Houston. . This little 17 acre plot of land is surrounded by highways, housing, and mimosa laden brunch spots. . But damn does it have an impressive amount of herps! 🐍🐸🐢🦎 . Combing information from surveys and iNaturalist, we concluded that a total of 24 species of herpetofauna could be found on the property . From Narrow-Mouth Toads to Nerodia, this little urban sanctuary serves as an enclave for wildlife in the middle of a bustling city. . So why dont other parks have this amount of wildlife? 🤔 . Well a big reason is that the park was left as natural as possible. Dirt trails criss cross through a forest of native plants. . A team of community volunteers are constantly on the property caring for and keeping it a sanctuary for wildlife. . On top of that, staff members who were awesome and passionate for nature filled the site. . Honestly, that little park serves as a fantastic model for how nature can still exist in the middle of a city . And think about who that affects. . Sure, the wildlife have a safe place to call home, but also the nearby human residents gain so much. . Kids who grew up in a concrete jungle now have immediate access to Nature and wildlife. . A community is built around the park, but also within it. Volunteers care for trails, plants, and animals during their free time. . Edith L Moore serves a fantastic role in the age where we become more disconnected from nature. Where its easier to not see a wild animal for weeks on end. Kali and Krait Skin: I joined @ajaykartik88 and Kali on fields of Jabalpur to search for snakes. He was tracing snakes in his TM cryptic manner and Ajay was explaining us what and why he is doing. We were standing on a unused agricultural land, Kali was trying to find clues and I casually told that I cant see anything from my side. Kali was standing 10-12ft from me and saw towards my feet and said something in Tamil. At the same time he came closer and picked a piece of moulted skin and within 2-3 seconds he told it is Krait and handed over that piece to me. I had to sit to observe trace of skin, after seeing carefully I found it was a very old decaying skin which faced rains and sun so got fossilized or pasted. I had two shocks, first, how he spotted that namesake skin from that distance when I couldnt. Second, how he instantly recognised species with bunch of 9-10 scales in which Kraits TM hexagonal scale was absent. Without this scale we never conclude some skin to be Kraits. I carefully peeled more skin and checked he was so right, it was Krait only. His observation of decaying skin laying from good distance and instant correct ID left me in shock and incredible surprise. Wheneger there is talk about Irulas, I cant stop myself from bringing this incident in discussion. When Rom confessed in number of documentaries that he still dont know how Irulas do this, thats true friends. That day I stopped trying to learn, I started just observing and following because I found learning a few things is beyond my human capabilities. P.S. Photo of this post has nothing to do with that incident, it is just for depiction purpose. 💙HUAYRURIN 💙🐬 #Huayrurin es un delfín rosado. Probablemente el ÚNICO delfín rosado que haya sobrevivido en cautiverio tantos años. El llegó al Quistococha en el 2006 cuando tan sólo tenía 6 meses. Un pescador lo capturó y al no encontrar a nadie a quien vendérselo decidido entregarlo a las autoridades quienes ante su vulnerable estado hicieron lo posible por salvar su vida. El pescador le daba de comer pescados pero el bebé delfín no podia masticarlos porque aún no tenía dientes. Fue la leche de cabra y luego la fórmula que le daban a los Manatíes lo que permitió que #Huayrurin supere la etapa crítica. El tiempo lejos de su hábitat natural hizo que no pudiera desarrollar sus habilidades naturales para cazar y sobrevivir en libertad, así que desde hace 14 años el vive en una poza acondicionada para que pueda ejercitarse y tener una vida digna dentro lo que cabe. Nuevamente un caso donde el daño causado por el humano es irreparable. Durante el estado de emergencia la Dircetura de Loreto ha garantizado su alimentación de muchos animalitos pero debido a que los recursos aun asi son escasos los profesionales a cargo solicitaron apoyo en la compra de accesorios para las rutinas de #Huayrurin. Of course, the evening that I dont bring my Nikon with me I see the largest eastern diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus) Ive ever seen at Conservation Park. Estimated to be about 6 ft, I almost stepped on this gorgeous snake when I walked in the grass to avoid a mini lake in the trail and CLEARLY wasnt paying attention to this dude chilling in the grass, very well camouflaged🤦. Indian Rock Python (Python molurus molurus) Place: Thirthhalli, Shimoga, KA. Date: 21/07/2020. Length: ~12 feet. Weight: 18.5 Kgs. Locals found a python badly entangled in the fish net which was used as a fence in the plantation. We were informed by locals and requested to remove the snake from the net and release it safely, so we also informed incharge forest department officials about the incident. After giving an instructions to locals about dos and donts we rushed to the location. We request spectators to keep safe distance from the snake as well as from each other. We gently untangled the snake from the net with the use of restraining tube and scissor and then bagged the snake. Later the snake was released in to the wild just after conducting an onsite awareness program for local community. Heartily thanks to locals to show the concern for the snake. Note: Please spread the word. If fish nets are being used for fence then there should be at least one foot gap from ground level. Also, waste fish net/iron mess/empty bottles must be stored in gunny sacks, tied and kept away from the ground. @ Covid-19: This is the time for all of us to understand the seriousness of the issue. A new species of Wolfsnake of the genus Lycodon was discovered from South India. (Lycodon deccanensis sp.nov) Based on the taxonomic investigations of the unidentified Lycodon sp from Ganesh et al. 2018, a group of scientists lead by S.R.Ganesh him self,were able to correctly identify the taxon after 125 years. The new snake closely resembles Travancore Wolfsnake (Lycodon travencoricus) and was previously wrongfully identified as a one. Earliest known records dates back to 1891 where Sclater collected specimens from South Arcot, Tamil Nadu but misidentified as L.travancoricus. The new snake is currently known from the Deccan Plateau hence the name Lycodon deccanensis was given. The new snake also shows ontogenic color shift as L.travancoricus. it can be distinguished from the later by the combination of the following characters. subcaudals often undivided; loreal in contact with internasal; nasal not in contact with prefrontal; anterior genials subequal to posterior pair; supraocular usually contacting prefrontal; preocular usually not contacting frontal. With the description of Lycodon deccanensis, the authors have restricted the range of L.travancoricus to Western Ghats and Southern Eastern Ghats by identifying the previous specimens from outside the Western Ghats as Lycodon anamallensis and Lycodon aulicus. A revised key to the genus Lycodon from South India is also presented We, Sri Lankan Herpetology team, congratulate authors S.R.Ganesh, Kaushik Deuti, K.G. Punith, N.S. Achyuthan, Ashok Kumar Mallik, Omkar Adhikari and Gernot Vogel for this discovery and wish them best of luck for future works. - Cunning kukri snake in Australia has learned to attack cane toads from the side and feed on their innards, thus avoiding the deadly poison exuded from their backs.
FWC biologist Pierson Hill recently documented an extremely unusual “patternless” eastern diamondback rattlesnake in north Florida, which he then microchipped and released safely for identification by researchers in the future. This color morph is exceptionally rare – only a small handful of patternless diamondbacks have been documented by biologists. The photos show this patternless diamondback, with a normal eastern diamondback for comparison. Pierson says it is very likely that this patternless trait is heritable given that it has popped up several times in this population and it’s likely that both parents need to contribute one or more recessive (“hidden”) gene copies to create patternless offspring. While eastern diamondbacks are venomous and should be treated with caution, they are one of only 6 venomous species of snakes in the state. Native snakes like this one are beneficial to the ecosystem: eastern diamondbacks have an important role in controlling rodent populations, consuming several species of mice, rats, squirrels, and even rabbits. They have been documented eating prey weighing as much as 85% the snake’s body weight! Today I celebrate #worldsnakeday by posting on of my photographs of the mysterious forest cobra that is native to the central and western parts of Africa. It is the largest true cobra species with a length up to 3.1 meters (10.1 feet). (I have also photographed the King Cobra on many occasions and it grows much bigger but is the sole member of its own genus ). The forest cobra, like the King Cobra, is a very capable swimmer and is often considered to be semi-aquatic. My team and I searched in lowland forests and really moist savanna habitats for this beautiful species during an assignment in Cameroon and eventually got lucky! Its really a fast snake and it has a reputation of being extra alert and sometimes nervous. That, and because of the strong venom, is likely why it is considered very dangerous. Bites to humans are less common than for other African cobras due to various factors, though a bite from the forest cobra is a life-threatening emergency. Ironically it is the lethal characteristics of snake venom that makes it so valuable and sought after for use in medicinal treatments. The toxic components of snake venom have for example both led to the development of medicine against heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimers. With a bit of luck, the Forest cobra may soon combat heart disease and this will luckily not affect the wild populations of this species at all.
