Reposting my 9-11 story. I remember this day 19 years ago and the people who perished that morning. This was my view as seen from the top of the Chrysler building that September day. I was a lawyer doing some drudgery when a partner came in and told me a plane had hit the twin towers. As we walked around to the other side of the building to what we believed was a freak accident, a second plane hit. We watched the scene unfold in horror as the buildings burned (with a photographer next to us taking photos out the window). We never imagined the buildings would fall. Shortly after this photo was taken, the Chrysler building was evacuated and the first tower collapsed. You could see the smoke from Lexington Ave. My surreal walk home to the UES will be seared into my memory for the rest of my days β I stood at 59th street as army tucks poured across the bridge and my heart filled with dread. Newly pregnant with my first child, I was separated from my husband who was outside of the City. The Bridges closed, there were no trains and phones werenβt working. I had a primal urge to escape. While I wanted to run, scores of brave men streamed down to the site to try and rescue the trapped. Their true bravery cannot be put into words. In the aftermath, everyone came together in grief and pain. We were all New Yorkers and Americans. We wanted to help, to do something, people were lined up for almost a city block to give blood...and then the chilling realization that there were few, if any, survivors. The City and the Country mourned the losses in NY, PA and DC while brave men continued to dig through the debris. To this day I will never look at first responders the same way. I hope we all take a moment to remember those who died, those whose bravery propelled them into danger and the families that grieve anew each year. 19 years ago we awoke on a beautiful day, βthe kind of day that put you in a good moodβ only to see the world change before our eyes. This event knocked away a naive sense, that most Americans had that we as a Nation where untouchable. The world has never been the same. At 902:57: Flight 175 crashes at about 590 mph into the south face of the World Trade Center, between floors 77 and 85. All 65 people on board the aircraft die and unknown hundreds in the building as well. I shot this from the roof of my building in Williamsburg Brooklyn. The first two are of the attack as the second plane and the third is a couple trying to comfort each other after watching the building crumble. My heart breaks a little everyone I see these images. Incendiary bombs descend in a hail of fire and fury onto the city of Kobe, Japan from B-29 Superfortress bombers; 1945. This mission formed part of the strategic bombing campaign waged by the United States against military and civilian targets during the Japan home islands campaign in the closing stages of World War II. The sixth-largest city in Japan at the time, with a population of roughly 1 million it would be bombed once more a month later. The houses were mostly built with wood making them highly flammable. As Japans largest port, home to the largest concentration of shipbuilding and industry, and an important city for transportation Kobe was a high priority target. Its low water supply and poor firefighting equipment created quite literally a tinderbox for city wide destruction. Of the citys residents, 8,841 were confirmed to have been killed in the resulting firestorms, destroying 21% of Kobes urban area. More than 650,000 people had their homes destroyed. During the raid, 280 Japanese fighters were spotted, 96 of which engaged the B-29 bombers in 128 attacks; this constituted a higher proportion of fighters sighted to those attacking than previously experienced during a night raid over Japan. Three bombers were lost during the raid. Two of the airmen in the downed aircraft, Sergeant Algy S. Augunus and Second Lieutenant Robert E. Copeland, survived and were captured by the Japanese. They were subsequently tried by a hastily convened court for the indiscriminate bombing of Kobe and Osaka, sentenced to death, and executed by firing squad. - @lookthroughhistory on Instagram

Like you, our customers and community, New York Distilling Company is grappling with how to recognize the protests going on all around us, and how to make a positive difference. Weβre a small company with limited resources. We donβt pretend to have particular insights on the big picture β we make gin and ryeβ but we love our community and its diversity and feel the desire and need to be purposeful and attentive. Within our industry, a tragedy occurred last Friday. Du Nord Craft Spirits, located in Minneapolis on the same block as a police precinct, was set on fire and then deluged with 400,000 gallons of water from their sprinkler system. The damage was devastating. Du Nord is one of the few minority-owned craft distillers in the United States, co-founded by Shanelle and Chris Montana in 2013. Chris, the immediate past President of our national association, is one of the most respected and admired leaders of our industry. We cannot lose his voice and presence. This week we are thinking of Shanelle and Chris and directing our efforts toward helping their distillery recover. We are making an initial donation today of $1,000 to the GoFundMe campaign initiated by the American Craft Spirit Association, which you can find below And we hope to do more. My friend Chris was on the 105th floor interning at Cantor Fitzgerald on September 11, hed been out there less than a month. The last call he made was to his father, the phone cut out mid sentence and he and many others perished into the rubble. I remember every detail of that day, exactly where I was. My rage, my desire for revenge, and the shock. My life and pretty much everyone elses changed that day. For the few months after there was an incredible sense of unity in the USA. We were attacked by foreign invaders and rallied together to support each other. Today were being attacked by each other through media lies, identity politics, antifa, false narratives, and foreign interests who have infiltrated our educational systems in an attempt to promote their socialist agenda, they infiltrated governments, they want to see your country crumble.
