At the beginning of it all, I was really sad because I didn’t think I would get the opportunity to do any more live shows and stuff like that. I really love performing, and I always look forward to connecting with the audience. My team and I executed #JamWithJobyJay acoustic, which gave me an opportunity to still entertain and connect with you guys through Live Streaming. I don’t know what comedy in LA looks like without the Satellite. I ran a show there for years. Most of the best times I’ve had doing comedy have been on that stage. Without it, I truly don’t know where I’d be. The Satellite supported me and kept letting me do a monthly show even in my most emo of times. I’m forever in debt to all of the staff for listening to me do a different version of the same bit with my friends over the years. Live gigs and festivals can’t happen without the hard work of an incredible team behind the scenes, but without gigs all of those people are out of jobs and the live music industry is at risk. Last year the UK’s live music industry added £4.5bn to the economy and supported 200k jobs across the country. Until we can get back to doing what we love, it’s important we speak up and demand government support for all of the various venues, festivals and promoters. #OTD (September 6) 40 years ago, was the penultimate of Stevie’s six-night run at Wembley Arena and the unscheduled appearance of Motown superstars #DianaRoss and #MarvinGaye was the extraordinary highlight. Diana was in the audience during a private visit to London, even as her “Upside Down” hit remained in the UK Top 20 after its #2 peak in August. Marvin was living in the city as a US tax exile, while also recording music there which was later to appear on his album, “In Our Lifetime”. For the 8,000-strong crowd, Stevie, Marvin and Diana together sang Marvin’s “What’s Going On” towards the concert’s end. By this time, Stevie had performed a two-and-a-half-hour set jammed with hits, including “Superstition,” “Living For The City,” “Boogie On Reggae Woman,” “Higher Ground” and “Sir Duke.” He also played two tracks from the upcoming #HotterThanJuly album: the reggae-soul masterpiece “Master Blaster (Jammin’)” and “Happy Birthday,” and noted the significance of the latter in his campaign for a federal holiday to mark the birthday of the late Rev. “The Bully” is keeping a smile on my face at the moment. It provided a few Swift sized belts of laughter through tears earlier today too. He was almost always described as “a musician’s musician” which felt like the highest caliber of compliment to me. As a non-music playing fan, to “get” Swift’s music felt like a secret entry into a club occupied by people who would become quick friends. His records have meant a great deal to me for nearly a third of my life and - my god - for how sad they tend to be, I’ve done a lot of falling in love to them. I remember being a little girl falling asleep (sharing a room with my sister) to lauren hills voice, off the cassettes tapes we had recorded from the radio (yall remember slamming that red record button down). I also remember her being very vocal about who she wanted listening to her music. Even though it wasnt targeted at the brown community, I didnt understanding why she felt so strongly. I was a brown girl growing up in a white world and thought theres a part of us that had to play by the rules. Something Im just starting to unmask now in my 30s. I do not blame the little girl for not understanding Lauren Hills anger and passion, really her point of view. I blame the adult for not doing more research. I am a progressive woman of colour and I need to do better. Our education system needs to do better in educating our youth in REAL #blackhistory not the watered down version that makes Canadians look great. Our #southasian households need to do better. Our community is very racist, straight up. In a zero/first generation Canadian home we never discussed the struggle in the black community. We only focused on the struggle within our own community. But we would not be here if it wasnt for our black brother and sisters. The civil rights movement is the reason we have the Immigration and Nationality Act, therefore the reason we are allowed to be here.
