📌HAMSTRING FLEXIBILITY HACK📌 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Do you find your hamstrings are always tight? Do you stretch regularly but do not make much progress? Most importantly, did you have a NEGATIVE test with the active straight leg raise test from my last post? If so, you’re at the right place! 🙋 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Although multi factorial, one cause of your stubbornly tight hammies can be stemming from your lower back! 🧠 💥 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You heard me right! Your weak back can be triggering your tight hamstrings! Think of it like this: you start bending forward to pick up a heavy box, or do something as simple as putting your pants on. If your back isn’t equipped for the task, the regulator of your body (the 🧠) will have to step in & help by turning your hamstrings on to prevent any further movement. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Basically, if your body perceives that there is an inherent threat with forward bending, it will call on your hamstrings to tighten which will essentially put the brakes on and halt all movement at the spine & hips! Talk about an intuitive system! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ On your end, you won’t feel a lower back pain or spasm; instead, all you’ll feel is hamstring tightness whenever you bend forward. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The fix? Continuing with the practical application of delt focused overloading movements, here are my top 3 exercises that I like to drive progressive overload with: 1️⃣Seated Smith Machine OHP- My top vertical press option. Being seated with back support to stabilize the scapulae and pressing on a fixed track allow almost all energy to be directed towards moving the weight up. This efficiency and stability will lead to more targeted tension and ensure that any failure point is localized in the delts. 2️⃣Machine Laterals- The machine has the ability to negate almost all of the downsides of cable/DB/band laterals and allows us to manipulate smaller aspects of the movement (like rotation of the humerus, degree of ab/adduction, etc) to place the most tension on the medial delts and decrease trap activation. Additionally, we can implement tempos into a pattern that is otherwise poorly catered to handle things like slow eccentrics and pauses and this can stimulate the delts in a unique way that can lead to more hypertrophy over the long run. 3️⃣Neural Machine OHP- Much like the Smith OHP, these are going to be a stable vertical press BUT the neutral grip provides an aspect of anterior delt bias that a wider/pronated grip can’t keep up with. The loads will be slightly decreased in comparison but the increased stimulus combined with the reduced strain on the shoulder joint make this a viable variation to add in when applicable. The big caveat here is finding a machine that properly lines up with the fibers of the anterior delt, has a matching resistance profile and doesn’t feel like complete shit. Needless to say, it’s not easy to find. I generally don’t think that isolation work for the posterior delts should be PO focused and trying to go too heavy in this plane will generally just beat you up and require assistance from too many auxiliary muscles to be applicable. Heavy rows/pulls should provide that stimulus to the rear delts but the higher intensity/lower rep delt work should almost always be exclusive to the anterior and, occasionally, medial heads. #progressiveperformancep2 - @progressiveperformancep2 on Instagram

Though the biceps are generally known as the classic “pump and flex” muscles, endlessly hammering out sets of 50 on cable curls will leave a lot to be desired in terms of total growth. While it’s definitely not the best idea either to perform 5RM barbell curls, we can find ways to strategically and safely train the biceps in lower rep ranges to maximize the range of stimulus being applied. Here are my top 3 exercises for the job: 1️⃣Supinated Pull-ups- Maybe a bit out of the ordinary here when you think of traditional biceps training but the stress that heavy pulling (especially vertical and supinated) is not to be underestimated. Because the risk:reward of doing things like curls in rep ranges lower than 8-10 is largely unfavorable, we can circumvent this by doing higher intensities with pull-up and pulldown variations. 2️⃣Machine Preacher Curls- When it comes to overload and tracking progress long term, the more control/stability we can get within a pattern the better...same goes for curls which is why I value these so highly. While I am a fan of heavy EZ and barbell curls (provided the wrists can handle the stress), the standardization of form is tough as loads increase over time. Machine based movements tend to alleviate this issue while also leveling the resistance curve a bit to be more favorable (in comparison to free weight preachers as well). 3️⃣Away Facing Low Cable Curls- This is probably my personal favorite biceps movement but it HAS to be done correctly and with intent or the objective of the exercise is lost. Provided your torso and upper arm position are properly aligned, these will place a huge demand on the biceps brachii through the lengthened position and unlike most other similar patterns, the cables ensure that demand is consistent throughout the ROM. More than any biceps exercise I’ve found, this allows you to really grind and strain through hard reps close to failure which can be a catalyst for hypertrophy. #progressiveperformancep2 - @progressiveperformancep2 on Instagram
