This #BLM man Patrick Hutchinson saved a counter protester from being beaten. Please watch his interview too if you can. Heβs a true humble man of love and bravery. I believe in the world that he wants. I just rewatched this video and noticed that it got truncated so I posted in my live feed too. The last half of his interview where he humbly declines to take all the credit to himself is deeply inspiring. - @eucademix on Instagram

The LGBTQ+ community is forever indebted to the early activists and organizers of the gay liberation movement, especially the black trans women who put everything - even their own lives - on the line at the Stonewall Inn in 1969. Without them all, we would not enjoy much of the freedom and equality we enjoy today. Now, itβs on all of us to continue the work and keep fighting against oppression to ensure that everyone - especially transgender folks and people of color - can share in equitable freedom and prosperity for all. It is difficult to overstate the political, pedagogical and personal importance of Black teachers. During Reconstruction, it was Black teachers, many of whom were formerly enslaved, who laid the foundations for public education throughout the South. In the early 20th century, they formed the rank and file of reform organizations like the National Association of Colored Women (NACW), National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), and National Urban League. During the Great Migration, they were pivotal in opening access to broader opportunities for Black youth in Harlem, Chicago, Detroit and other cities in the urban North. Teaching was never simply a career for these educators. It was part of a larger social and political mission. It was a tool to be used for the liberation and empowerment of the race as a whole. . The best contemporary research reinforces what historical anecdotes reveal. Black teachers today are, by nearly every metric, more successful at supporting the achievement and well-being of Black children. Black students who have even one Black teacher during elementary school are more likely to graduate high school and consider college. Black students with Black teachers experience less exclusionary discipline and fewer office visits, a crucial break in the school-to-prison pipeline, a disturbing and widespread trend in which school-discipline interactions lead to interactions with the criminal justice system...These skills and mindsets are critical, especially now, as Black students face a new wave of trauma initiated by police violence against Black bodies, and schools grapple with the ways in which they often perpetuate racist systems. - Erica Hines and Michael Hines . Black Joy and Resistance A conversation with Adreinne Waheed and Jamel Shabazz This conversation will focus on Adreinne Waheedβs book, Black Joy and Resistance, which masterfully chronicles Black resistance and celebrates joyous energy and resilience in Black culture and communities throughout the diaspora, and Jamel Shabazzβs new book, City Metro. He is the author of numerous titles such as Sights in the City: New York Street Photographs, Men of Honor, A Time Before Crack, Pieces of a Man, Represent, Crossing 125th Street, Sights in the City, Back in the Days, and Seconds of my Life among others. Adreinne Waheed is a visual artist based in Brooklyn, NY. Her work bears witness to and holds space for the beauty, brilliance and resilience of Black folks across the diaspora. She is an accomplished photo editor who, during her 20-year career, has produced shoots for Vibe, King and Essence magazines. Her photography has been published by The New York Times, National Geographic, Photo District News and The Fader. In 2010, she created the Waheed Photo Archive, a collection of found photographs of African-Americans from Civil War to the present. The Smithsonianβs National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) acquired the archive in 2015. Her self-published coffee table book, entitled Black Joy and Resistance, was released in December 2018 and is available now on Amazon. Jamel Shabazz is known for his photographs of New York during the 1980βs. A documentary, fashion, and street photographer, he has authored 10 monographs. His photographs have been exhibited worldwide and his work is housed within the permanent collections of The Whitney Museum, The Studio Museum in Harlem, and the Smithsonianβs National Museum of African American History & Culture. Over the years, Shabazz has taught young students at the Studio Museum in Harlemβs βExpanding the Wallsβ project, and The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture βTeen Curatorsβ program. Shabazz is the 2018 recipient of the Gordon Parks award for documentary photography, and a member of the photo collective, Kamoinge. βEvery Labor Day, we celebrate the incredible contributions of the labor movement and working people to our nationβs progress. This year, with 13.6 million workers currently unemployed and around one million new people applying for unemployment benefits each week, many working families have little to celebrate. While many Black workers have been deemed essential, our country continues to treat them like theyβre disposableβeven as a national racial justice movement has declared that Black lives matter. Millions of βessentialβ workers also get little or no paid sick leave or health coverage and consequently must choose between their health and their livelihoods. Indeed, the COVID-19 pandemic has laid bare the ways our current economy fails to meet the everyday needs of working people. Black workers have been hardest hit by both the pandemic and its economic fallout. They are disproportionately more likely to lose their jobs as a result of the pandemic. And Black workers who are still working are more likely to be employed in low-wage essential service jobs, and are therefore more likely to face greater exposure to the virus than other groups. Though they make up about one in nine workers overall, Black workers comprise about one in six of all front-line industry workers, according to a recent report by the Economic Policy Institute. They are disproportionately represented in employment at grocery stores, public transit, warehouses, and child care. This shows that, while many Black workers have been deemed essential, our country continues to treat them like theyβre disposableβeven as a national racial justice movement has declared that Black lives matter. Yet, as some elected officials have echoed that call, it remains Black workers who have been disproportionately impacted by our governments inadequate intervention in this economic crisis. Congress has poured billions of public dollars into the coffers of corporations, leaving workers with a one-time stimulus payment and now significantly reduced unemployment benefits that fall even shorter of what many families need to stay afloat.β Tanya Wallace-Gobern #BlackWorkersRising #BlackLaborDay2020 #WeReady - @cbtuunder40leaders on Instagram

βi canβt breathe.β β£ β£ iβve been thinking about this a lot lately. weβve seen this story so many times now iβve lost count. our black brothers and sisters in the US are out there getting killed for merely existing. for living. we need to be loud and clear now: this cannot continue. β£ β£ as we begin to come out of this pandemic, i believe we have a unique opportunity to rebuild our society; to make it a fairer, safer, and better place for all of us. but that requires active and consistent commitment, as well as understanding and admitting that we donβt all experience the world the same way. we must decide to change things and use whatever power we wield to do it. anything less is a surrender to hate. - @hadleyk on Instagram

The Stonewall uprising, which Pride commemorates every year in June, was a protest against police brutality. Integral to this monumental event was transgender activist Marsha P. Ive always had a disdain for instagram. It is a necessity in my line of work, almost like your own mini PR company if utilised properly. But the past few years Instagram has been attracting more and more tone deafness. It has felt acutely more arrogant. Hence why Ive shied away from it. How can you project your picture perfect life when you know how many are suffering and striving to live equally across the planet? But over the last few days my opinion has changed. Ive seen how powerful a tool it can be when used as a tool of protest. The outpouring from everyone has been so moving, this time something does feel different. I hope that is true. If this is the modern way to protest and in these challenging COVID times; we can all protest safely, away from police presence and law breaking. Most importantly we can protest in a way that can stay online forever, for those in power to see over and over again. That is immensely powerful. We all have no excuse. - @benjaminsallen on Instagram

Wrote about media framing, the role and responsibilities of white photographers and editors, and the importance of Black people telling their own stories, again. This essay is a rare offering in that it is meant for all white and non-Black lens based artists and publications. Now is the time to reconfigure yourselves or you WILL get reconfigured. Now is certainly not the time to start throwing work at Black artists thatβs not thoughtful or beneficial. Now is not the time to release idiotic statements about your consistent reliance on racism, that offers up temporary promises of doing better (thinking specifically of that foolishness of a letter from one Ms. Wintour.) Now is the time to sit quietly and listen. Stew in your discomfort, in your guilt. Share it with YOUR community of non-Black people. Now is the time to educate yourself in ways youβve intentionally neglected to gain and misuse your power. *in my very best Ron Isley Voice, βDonβt Make Me Saaaaaay, it again GIRRRLLL!!β Grateful to @insider for offering this essay a home!
