Happy Birthday Edward Burne-Jones! The British painter and designer Edward Burne-Jones was born on this day in 1833. One of the key figures of the Pre-Raphaelite group, Burne-Jones also worked closely with the designer William Morris and was a co-founder of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. In addition to paintings, Burne-Jones was involved in the resurgence of the art of stained glass in Britain. Examples of his paintings, stained glass, and illustrations are on view in the AFA exhibition, “Victorian Radicals: From the Pre-Raphaelites to the Arts & Crafts Movement.” In his unfinished painting, “The Wizard” which he worked on from 1891 to 1898, we see a hooded sorcerer revealing a convex mirror behind a curtain. Is the shipwreck we see in that mirror happening at the moment or is this a view into the future? Burne-Jones never identified a specific literary source of this painting, so perhaps the scene was drawn from his own imagination. “Victorian Radicals” resumes its national tour when it opens at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno on March 6, 2021. According to the Old Testament Book of Judith, the Assyrian general Holofernes intended to destroy the Jews of Bethulia. On the eve of battle, he invited a young Jewish widow named Judith into his tent with the aim of seducing her. Taken with her beauty and inebriated with drink, Holofernes fell asleep, and Judith decapitated the general using his own sword. Thus, Judith liberated her people. The young Andrea Vaccaro was enamoured by the works of Caravaggio, often emulating his naturalism and chiaroscuro and adapting his most famous compositions. Our Judith was clearly inspired by Caravaggio’s Salome with the Head of John the Baptist, now in the National Gallery in London. It is now in the private collection of the Conseil Investissement Art BNP Paribas but was displayed in the Musée dOrsays 2007 Courbet exhibition. In the 1840s Courbet produced portraits of his friends and clients as well as self-portraits, including Self-Portrait with a Black Dog (1842). He spent time in the Louvre copying works by José de Ribera, Zurbaran, Velasquez and Rembrandt which started to influence his work. He broke from his traditional vertical format for the work. He was attached to Le Désespéré, taking it with him when he went into exile in Switzerland in 1873. Hans Andersen Brendekilde (1857–1942): Worn Out, 1889, oil on canvas, 207 x 270 cm, Fyns Kunstmuseum, Odense, Denmark . . Another Danish painter and a close friend of Ring, Hans Andersen Brendekilde grew up among poor people in the countryside and depicted the true conditions of life in rural Denmark in the period from 1880 to 1920. In this heart-rending depiction of o rural scene, we see a day-labourer lying crumpled on the rock-strewn ground of the barren field where he had been working. His onerous task, with other peasants, would have been to remove the stones from the ground, prior to ploughing and planting, and put them in piles awaiting disposal. The field although barren takes up eighty per cent of the picture. Look at the detail Brendekilde has incorporated in his depiction of the ground. However, what is more emotive is the portrayal of the two figures in the foreground. The elderly peasant worker has stumbled and fallen to the ground. He is dressed in shabby clothes which are covered in dirt. One of his wooden clogs has fallen off during his fall. The heavy stones he had been carry in his apron, lie on the ground next to him. He had finally been overcome by exhaustion or maybe he has suffered a heart attack. A woman, maybe his wife or daughter or just a co-worker, has rushed to his aid. She is kneeling next to him and cradles his head. Her mouth is open wide as she screams for somebody to come and help. Her impassioned plea has yet to be answered and she is both overwhelmed with fear for the man and her own helplessness. - @painters.paintings on Instagram

Every one of us has times when we need to know things will get better. For emotional health and spiritual stamina, everyone needs to be able to look forward to some respite, to something pleasant and renewing and hopeful, whether that blessing be near at hand or still some distance ahead. My declaration is that this is precisely what the gospel of Jesus Christ offers us, especially in times of need. There is help. There is happiness. There really is light at the end of the tunnel. It is the Light of the World, the Bright and Morning Star, the “light that is endless, that can never be darkened” (Mosiah 16:9). It is the very Son of God Himself. To any who may be struggling to see that light and find that hope, I say, hold on. Keep trying. God loves you. Things will improve. Even if you cannot always see that silver lining on your clouds, God can, for He is the very source of the light you seek. He does love you, and He knows your fears. He hears your prayers. Some blessings come soon, some come late, and some don’t come until heaven, but for those who embrace the gospel of Jesus Christ, they come. It’s finally here. Delayed due to Covid-19, the long-awaited Artemisia Gentileschi show at London’s @nationalgallery opens to the public this week. Highlights of the landmark exhibition, the gallery’s first major show dedicated to a female artist in its 196-year history, include two versions of Judith beheading Holofernes and Artemisia’s earliest known self-portrait. The myth of Lady Godiva is an old one. While she was a very real woman in the 11th century, the legend surrounding her is a bit more questionable. She was married to a man named Leofric, Earl of Mercia, and was a benefactor of many monasteries. As the legend goes, Leofric, Earl of Mercia, laid down oppressive taxes to the people of Coventry. After repeatedly asking her husband to relieve their people of this debt, he finally agreed - on the condition that she rode naked on horseback through the center of town. Lady Godiva did just that. She stripped off her clothes, leaving only her long hair available for any sort of modesty. Other versions of the myth say that before she rode out, she asked the townspeople to remain in their homes with their windows shut.
