He’s seen over 3,000 in the wild, and photographed probably almost as many. But the emaciated bear he captured here broke his heart. The bear scrounges for food in a trash can used seasonally by the local Inuit people. Finding nothing except what looks like a scrap of paper, the bear chews on it nonetheless, before collapsing down, exhausted and resigned to another hungry night. “We stood there crying—filming with tears rolling down our cheeks,” he said. Asked why he didn’t try to help, try to feed the poor creature, Nicklen says he wasn’t equipped to do that. “Of course, that crossed my mind,” he said. “But it’s not like I walk around with a tranquilizer gun or 400 pounds of seal meat.” Besides, that wouldn’t have been nearly enough food for the formerly majestic animal. It would have only prolonged its suffering once the humans filming it had left. Not to mention, of course, it’s illegal to feed wild polar bears in Canada. Nicklen says he filmed the bear’s slow, trudging death, because he wanted it to mean something. “When scientists say bears are going extinct, I want people to realize what it looks like. Bears are going to starve to death,” he said.So why is that polar bear so thin and weak? Why is it starving? That’s because of us, and our refusals to take climate change seriously. The animals live only in the Arctic, meaning they’re the first to feel the impact of global warming, and the consequences that follow. Polar bears feed on seals when they come up for air in holes in the ice sheet, or haul themselves onto sea ice to rest. They weigh between 350 to 700 kg, and despite, being good swimmers, can’t catch their prey in the water. So when the sea ice melts because of global warming, these polar bears lose their hunting ground. When sea levels rise, they have less room to move and have to migrate to land. Way back in 2002, a World Wildlife Fund report predicted that climate change would eventually lead to polar bear extinction. Detenido por Robo con violencia sujeto que asaltó domicilio en #Pichilemu Continúan intensamente las diligencias de Carabineros para dar con el paradero de los otros miembros de la banda. Se logró recuperar dinero en efectivo que había sido sustraído. Cerca de las 23 hrs. de este domingo, un llamado telefónico alertó a Carabineros de la 3ª comisaría de Pichilemu, de un robo con violencia, a un domicilio en el sector Los Ciruelos de la comuna. En ese momento, Carabineros se trasladó rápidamente al lugar, donde la víctima, de 52 años, señaló que mientras se encontraba el interior de su casa, escuchó disparos y al salir para ver lo que sucedía vio a 7 individuos, uno de ellos a rostro cubierto, que ingresaron a su domicilio, agrediéndolo con un arma de fuego en la cabeza y sustrajeron dos bolsos con distintas especies. Los vecinos al percatarse de lo ocurrido aportaron las características de los vehículos en que se trasladaban, iniciandose así distintos procedimientos para ubicar a los delincuentes. Fue así como se logró encontrar a una camioneta sospechosa, sin encargo, fiscalizando a su conductor. En la revisión del vehículo se encontró en el interior un gorro pasa montañas y $456.000 en efectivo, procediendo a su detención. Posteriormente el sujeto identificado como L.M.C.J de 42 años, con antecedentes policiales, fue identificado por la víctima del robo, quien resultó con lesiones de carácter leve. Carabineros de la SIP de Pichilemu se encuentran trabajando intensamente para dar con el paradero de los demás sujetos. When Russian told me its impossible and you would die!!! Story of reaching the coldest village, Oymyakon. . . . It is located in the middle of or Siberia, It is 1000 km Northeast of Yakutsk, 18 hours continuous drive. Its also one of the most dangerous road in the world, even my truck had a little accident and I thought I will gonna die by freezing in nowhere but I survived, before reaching we crossed 2 frozen rivers, climbed a mountain range, the road was as slippery as glass, we are not actually driving, we were sliding on the road. . . . It took me 4 days to reach there from Yakutsk, Hitchhiking was not easy, it is most difficult hitchhiking in my 50,000 km of hitchhiking experience. Locals told me its impossible to reach there by hitchhiking because of its a tiny village of 500 people, and before 500 km there is nothing only Siberian taiga and wild animals and you might die. . . . As an experienced Hitchhiker, I knew it, Nothing is impossible when there is road, there must be car and someday someone will take me, I might have to wait for a long time and yes, I had to wait for 2 days in Alaska cafe before I got a ride to oymyakon in a truck loaded with coal for the people in oymyakon, to keep there warm. The truck driver said, its very risky to drive in this road and every year a lot of people die in the cold when their car stopped or machine failed, I was praying all the way, I heartbeat was on the top all the time. . . . when I almost died :- Around 8 Pm during the night, around 50 km before oymaykon, I was sleeping our trucked fallen in the snow, oh my god, first I was scared what to do now, I can dont anything, I am the worst person when it comes to mechanical, even I cant fix my cycle. our truck wheel had a burst. Somehow, I gathered courage, took all the jacket, Bhagwan ka Nam leke, I went to help truck driver, I helped him and almost 1 hour of struggle we fixed it, Yay! we were ready to go oymyakon. So we had a big announcement that we were really excited to share with yall this week, but there are more important things going on. As most of you know, a severe category 4 hurricane slammed almost directly into the Texas/Louisiana border late Wednesday night into early Thursday morning, leaving a path of destruction in its wake. The storm surge was thankfully nowhere near as bad as it was predicted to be, but the winds and rains certainly left their mark. More than half a million people are without power. Houses and businesses were destroyed and windows were blown out of buildings. There have been no confirmed casualties here in our state, but there have been 2 confirmed in Louisiana. Thousands are left without homes. Here at Third Coast Traveler, we ask that youd find it in your heart to help in whatever way you can. Either by making a monetary or supply donation to reputable organizations that are on the front lines helping to rescue those still in danger, restore power to cities, deliver food and water, and helping to clean up and rebuild homes and neighborhoods. Os mandados de busca e apreensão foram cumpridos após o roubo em uma casa, em Pinheiro Preto, em setembro. Dois homens foram presos em flagrante, um deles por posse ilegal de arma de fogo com numeração suprimida, e o outro por tráfico de droga. O adolescente também foi apreendido e encaminhado à unidade da cidade de Caçador. A arma encontrada na residência será periciada para saber se faz parte de um outro crime ocorrido em julho, também em Pinheiro Preto. Todo o material apreendido e autores foram conduzidos à Delegacia de Polícia. A operação também teve o apoio do canil das unidades de São Lourenço do Sul e Campos Novos. ANTHROPOMORPHISM- “the attribution of human characteristics, emotions, and behaviors to animals or non-human things.” You may have seen this footage a few years ago. A polar bear appeared to be “patting” a dog, and the whole world said “awww 🥰”. That’s because we anthropomorphised the situation. We love patting dogs and having that emotional connection with them, so by seeing the same apparent physical behaviour in another animal, our brains create an emotional reasoning that allows us to feel closer to the polar bear. Unfortunately, this emotional reasoning often leads to general shock when the situation changes, and can even create dangerous situations. Although we may like to think this polar bear loves to play with dogs as we do, we must step back and understand it’s true intentions as a polar bear, not a human. This polar bear was later documented eating another dog... So is anthropomorphism always a bad thing? What if, by believing an animal is displaying the same emotions as a human (we are also animals by the way), it creates conservation awareness and action for that species? Protects its home?
