The Arctic is transitioning from a frozen region to an entirely different climate, one dominated not by ice and snow, but by warming temperatures, open water, and rain, scientists warned in a new study published in the journal Nature Climate Change. “The rate of change is remarkable,” the lead author of the study said in a statement. “We need to change our definition of what Arctic climate is.” The study found that sea ice has melted so extensively —shrinking 12 percent per decade since satellite measurements began in the late 1970s — that even an unusually cold year will not produce the same ice extent seen in the middle of the 20th century. Fall and winter air temperatures will warm enough to officially classify the Arctic as a different climate zone within the next few decades, causing more precipitation to fall as rain and not snow. A less glamorous, but as important side of archaeology. While many university-organised excavations were cancelled, archaeological companies had to adapt to the new corona restrictions to stay in business. BA2 student Jeroen Huizer joined an Early Bronze Age excavation in Tiel, organised by ADC ArcheoProjects. Jeroen says that the corona restrictions did not take away any of the fun of excavating. Hand sanitizers were all around at the site and everyone brought their own coffee mug and had a designated chair. Of course, 1,5 m distance had to be kept at all times as well. Still it was great fun he says. On September 15, Arctic sea ice likely reached its annual minimum extent of 1.44 million square miles - the second lowest in the 42-year-old satellite record (the record-holder for lowest extent was observed on September 17, 2012). The 2020 figure — which is preliminary because a late-season surge of summer warmth could still drop the extent further — continued an observed trend of long-term Arctic sea ice decline. This shortening kit really took some abuse from me this spring and I was impressed how well it stood up. Not once did I have to add coolant or have any issues pop up. When I installed the kit I really took the extra time to clean and clean that darn coolant out of every nook and cranny! That pesky coolant is oily and you need to make sure she is nice and cleeean. I followed the instructions on how to apply the sealant and 💥 it was simple. If your thinking of shortening your sled this season and want that benefit of popping a wheelie to spin around in them tight spots or simply poppin wheelies all day long! We just launched a new blog series called Northern Latitudes, where we feature topical maps from our Arctic Marine Atlas and elsewhere, with a peek behind the scenes into how they are made. The focus of our first blog in the series is on two maps from our Arctic Marine Atlas: one map that illustrates polynyas and another showing phytoplankton blooms.⠀ ⠀ Polynyas are areas of water that remain open even when surrounded by sea ice. Flaw leads are also areas of open water that form between sea ice that is attached to land and the moving pack ice. These two maps demonstrate the important role that polynyas and flaw leads play in supporting Arctic ecosystems and phytoplankton growth. A changing climate impacts polynyas and flaw leads in different ways.⠀ ⠀ To learn more about these maps, how they were made and what they can tell us, check out the link in our bio! YACHT SALVAGE UNDERWAY Back in May, 2020 this yacht slipped it moorings and wound up on the beach in front of the lead lights at Lancelin‘s dunes. Some four months later Department of Transport have had to arrange a salvage crew to remove the stricken vessel and they are currently on the beach with one of two cranes they hope will do the job. Weather a storm about to hit, very soft sand and a heavy concrete hull boat filled with sand, this will prove quite a challenge. Today in Untold Canadian History: 2019 First Nation Issues State of Emergency After Evacuation Request Denied. The Neskantaga First Nation, located about 540km north of Thunder Bay, issued a state of emergency after its request for emergency evacuations was refused by Indigenous Services Canada. The request was made after the town’s water pump and backup water pump broke down, resulting in contaminated and unfiltered water. A spokesperson for Indigenous Services Said that technicians would arrive within days to repair pumps. The Neskantaga reserve has been under boil water advisory since 1995.
