Historically as well as for fashion, cloth was used as a form of currency there are records of cloth being used as money going back to the fourteenth century. Across Africa, there are many styles and cloth is very important in many African cultures. African textiles also act as historical documents, offering context in cases where written accounts are unavailable: History in Africa may be read, told and recorded in cloth. - @blackobjectiveuk on Instagram

The Himba tribe still respect and live according to the traditions of their ancestors. They are an ancient tribe located in Namibia, speak a language called Otjihimba and are about 20,000 to 50,000 people in population. The Himba people are a semi-nomadic people who breed cattle and goats.⠀ ⠀ •⠀ ⠀ The women tend to do more labor-intensive work such as carrying water to the village, building homes and milking cows. Whereas the men handle more of the political tasks and legal trials, which also make them the leaders.⠀ ⠀ •⠀ ⠀ Their homes are simple, cone-shaped structures bound together with palm leaves and mud. In the Himba culture a sign of wealth is the cattle you had owned during your lifetime, which is later on represented by the horns on your grave.⠀ ⠀ •⠀ ⠀ The Himba women are famous for rubbing their bodies with otjize, a mixture of butter fat and ochre (an iron-rich rock), believed to protect their skins against the harsh climate. The red mixture is said to symbolize earths rich red color and the blood that symbolizes life.⠀ ⠀ •⠀ ⠀ The Himba worship their ancestors and the god Mukuru. Often times, the ancestors act as Mukurus representatives. Their homes are surrounded by an okuruwo (ancestral fire) and their livestock, both are closely tied to their belief in ancestor worship. The fire represents ancestral protection and the livestock allows for proper relations between human and ancestor. Each family has their own ancestral fire, which is kept by the fire-keeper, who attends to the ancestral fire every seven to eight days in order to communicate with Mukuru and the ancestors on behalf of the family 👦🏿👩🏾👩🏿‍🦱🧒🏽👧🏿⠀ ⠀ •⠀ ⠀ #africana #panafricanism⠀ #visitaftica #africatravel #unapologeticallyblack #proudlyafrican ❤️ #divinedarkskin #panafricanist #africanlife #weloveafrica #blackpeoplematter #africandiaspora #eastafrican #blackandproud #blackandproud✊🏾 #melanated #blackrevolution #blacknation #travelafrica #blackculturematters #himbatribe #namibia🇳🇦 - @africandiaries_ on Instagram

“Populations from the Arabian Peninsula and the African continent have crossed, migrated, and mixed both within and outside the institution of slavery for thousands of years. In many places and communities, it would be difficult to even distinguish who is ‘African’ from who is ‘Arabian’.” At the LINK IN BIO, we take a deep dive into the often hidden histories of slavery, migration, and early nation building that have led to the complex positions of Black Arabs in the Gulf today, between inclusion, reconciliation, and discrimination. - @scenearabia on Instagram

#pallaseditora #esperançagarcia #soniarosa #quandoaescravaesperancagarciaescreveuumacarta - @pallaseditora on Instagram

#ibeji - @faleafrofuturo on Instagram

The brilliant Nigerian potter Ladi Kwali (c.1925 - 1984) working in her studio: undated photograph. (If you know who shot it, do let me know.) For the latest episode of Bow Down, I absolutely loved talking with the renowned Kenyan / British ceramic artist Magdalene Odundo about her admiration for Ladi Kwali, who taught her in the early 1970s at the Pottery Training Centre that was established by Michael Cardew in Abuja in the 1950s. Ladi Kwali’s portrait now adorns the Nigerian 20 Naira bill - she was the first woman artist to be featured on currency in Africa. Magdalene explains that even now, after almost 50 years, she feels that Ladi Kwali is looking over her shoulder when she’s creating her ceramics. Despite the fact that they spoke different languages - Ladi Kwali spoke Hausa, and Magdalene Swahili and English - they had a productive relationship that revolved around demonstration, laughter and occasionally dancing with joy if a pot was particularly successful.
