Every few years this picture of a BRIGHT green car with massive rims and military style font that reads “FREE PALESTINE” resurfaces online and all of us are like, “My ride is here.” Then we tuck it into the back of our brains until the next time it pops up again. But in the wake of the police murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, another car popped up on my timeline. It’s a silver and beige slab with a pop-trunk neon display that says, simply, “BLACK LIVES MATTER.” To me it had the exact same energy as the Free Palestine car, so I put both pictures together in a tweet, and wound up going viral for the first time. Because the response was so positive, I wondered, “Can I find out who owns these cars and get them to meet each other?” Well, after some extensive internet research, that’s exactly what I did. The first story from @palestineinamerica’s 2020 music edition to go live online is about how I found David and Ayman, the owners of the cars, the music that inspired them, and how we found out we were each very much down for each other’s causes.
