The roaring 20s & the Art Deco era were sources of great creativity for Vacheron Constantin, it is therefore of little surprise to note that the brand’s first skeleton watch dates from 1924. 🤩 💎 It is however not “simply” a skeleton pocket watch (with caliber RA 17’’’, the same found in the first Chronomètre Royal models) but one in a rock crystal case circled in a platinum ring and set with Burmese sapphires! 🤤 However, the object of this post is ref 43032 a superbly sophisticated and elegant extra slim perpetual calendar launched in 1994 at a time where skeleton work was not yet seen. 💀 @VacheronConstantin decided to apply the delicate art of skeletonizing and engraving to the ref 43031 which was the brand’s first perpetual calendar wristwatch launched in 1983, it showed the brand’s attachment to mechanical watchmaking in the wake of the quartz crisis and is a tribute to the brand’s perpetual calendar pocket watches especially with its 48 month cycle. 🎖️ Ref 43032 is a potent mix of Vacheron Constantin’s prowess and expertise: it features the ultra slim cal 1120 which for almost half a century from its launch in 1968 the world’s thinnest automatic movement upon which a perpetual calendar module had been added. 🧐 The movement’s plates and bridges were delicately hollowed and superbly hand engraved. Have you ever wondered how Jean and Lucie Genbrugge made those amazing enamel Mercator dials? 🤔 The dials of the Mercators are enamelled using the champlevé method, meaning that the 18k gold dial is first hollowed out in the shape of the continents and other geographical features as well as the two sectors for hours and minutes (swipe to see how that looks). The resulting recesses are then filled with multiple layers of opaque enamel to form a suitable background. Each layer needs to be carefully fired at a temperature of 700° to 800° C (1290° to 1470°F) and, once it has cooled down, meticulously smoothed before receiving the appropriate colors, in this case: green, yellow and purple, laid on with a brush composed of a few marten hairs. The operation needs to be repeated for each and every application of enamel, returning to the kiln a good thirty times or more, at various temperatures and for varying lengths of time depending on the color and the quantity of enamel applied. Finally, the workpiece is coated with transparent flux and fired one last time at about 900°C (1650°F) before smoothing and final polishing. The appropriate details are then penned on each globe with the aid of a binocular microscope. Following this, a layer of protective fondant is applied to enhance and protect the finished work. Finally, the dials are extensively buffed until each is as flat and glossy as possible 🤓 Each individual map takes over twelve days to produce, meaning an average of just two dials can be made each month without taking into account the possible breaking as enamel is extremely brittle and unpredictable, requiring prudent and gradual cooling down to room temperature to avoid potentially destructive internal tensions that can cause the dial to shatter 😱 The enamel dialed Mercator was awarded the “Best Dial” prize at the 1996 World Watch and Jewellery Show in Basel (today’s Baselworld) 🥇📜 A huge thanks to @the_vintage_lounge for sharing this info on the Hour Lounge - especially the picture of a pre-enamel Mercator dial 🙏🏻 #vcmercator #mercator #ref43050 #43050 #thehourlounge #vacheronconstantin #vacheron #retrograde #watches - @vacheronconstantin_enthusiast on Instagram

As busy as life is, some things are just too good to make you drop everything and just admire, share and talk about it. One of those things is introduced today: @ferdinandberthoud Chronomètre FB 2RE. One of the most striking time-only watches I have ever seen and actually something I would only expect from Berthoud; just above all. The design is based on a marine chronometer with a gimbal system made by Berthoud - hours/minutes reside in the inner circle whereas the seconds are placed on the circumference of the dial. The case structure with its curves, angles is an example of the best possible adaptation of an inspiration from 300 years ago. As usual, and seen also in the previous model, the case shows portholes on the sides to view the stunning chain inside. I am now going to stop with the dial and the case because that movement is capable of overshadowing almost everything. Only visible parts are the fusée and chain, balance system and the remontoire - a mechanism developed for the pure purpose to develop the chronometric performance of the watch. The architecture is just breathtaking. Stunning frosted finish on the baseplate gives the exposed parts a floating effect. The remontoire is directly connected to the balance system as opposed to the regular spring use in many other pieces; which in return gives a much better visual. The locking fork, the three-armed cam as well as the remontoire is all easily traceable. 250 hours of work on each caliber just shows itself. Quite possibly the best watch introduced this year. ROLEX OYSTER – VINTAGE • In the 1920s Rolex released the Oyster, which was the first water resistant watch with a patented case with a screw-down crown and caseback that Rolex still uses by name today. “Oyster” is still in the official name of many Rolex watches. The Oyster had a recognizable hexagonal or cushion-shaped case with a clear dial that on most versions had Arabic numeral dials. The Oyster was not exactly a diving watch, but as a water resistant timepiece it was certainly good for swimming, and general wear. Most Oyster watches came with precious metal gold or sterling silver cases. A true classic, the Rolex was a pivotal part of Rolex’s long term success and would have certainly been on the wrist of active high-society men in the late 1920s.
