- Rear differential broke down after we reached the Salt Flats. Been stuck in Wendover, Utah (ugh) two nights. Mechanic is having trouble finding the part and we might have to stay another night. We ran out of water and need to do laundry badly. First breakdown and I feel like crying.
The wilderness: its not restful, its not comfortable, its not pleasant, and most of all its certainly not safe. But it is still good. Experiencing such desolate places reduces dependency to only what is sustaining, and brings that much more excitement and joy when arriving at the oasis. On a hot hike in Death Valley, its finding a spring of clear water to stay hydrated and alive until making it to a gas station full of cold Powerade. In the disappointment, uncertainty, loneliness, and heartaches of life, [for me] its the trust in a God that knows and loves me and has a purpose to bring me through it for something good. My time in these places reminds me of a song (from the story).... Traffic in the atmosphere. In the first video you can see bursting motion of the Aurora Australis and the swift overflight of the #internationalspacestation ISS as it moves across the southern horizon (the bright line of light moving horizontally). I saw a spaceship last night! Zipping by at over 17,000mph, the ISS is the most incredible feat of engineering created by humans, and pretty much anyone can see it. No need to travel, itll come to you! I downloaded an ISS tracker app (there are many and they all work well) so I could get alerts when this thing is overhead. During the pass, the ISS shows up as a bright star steadily moving overhead. Theres nothing quite like it in the sky. If you have a dobsonian telescope like mine, you can position it just ahead of where the station is moving, and catch it in the eyepiece as it zips by. Seeing the panels and radiators in real time is breathtaking. To get these shots, I put a high framerate camera in the eyepiece of my scope, and manually tracked the station while recording frames. Out of 25,000 frames the ISS was in 1500 of them. - @cosmic_background on Instagram

This is the last week to see Masayuki Shioda’s “Retinagazer” at Taka Ishii Gallery Photography / Film. Shioda has also produced “Retinagazer”, a book composed of previous works and based on the same concept as this exhibition. Through the process of making this book, the artist confronted his own works to trace his transformations throughout the years and make new discoveries in previously shot images. In “JIKAN” (2012), included in this show, he has shot a night sky with lens flare. The stars, which are far from us in physical and temporal distance, and the flare, a trace of the lens, come together in one image to create a new space. Transcending space and time, the artist revitalizes essential elements of photography through his consciousness to link them to the contemporary period. This exhibition will explore the compounded and evolving relations between the spaces of the individual works and their development and expansion as well as reciprocal effects in the exhibition space. Masayuki Shioda Retinagazer is on view through Sep 26. Манна небесная: самые необычные «дожди» в истории. В середине августа этого года над швейцарским городком Ольтен прошёл шоколадный «дождь». В течение нескольких дней подряд с небольшими перерывами с неба сыпался какао-порошок, который тонким слоем осел на автомобилях и наличниках окон. Объяснение явлению нашлось сразу. Причиной его стала неисправность вентиляционной системы на одной из местных шоколадных фабрик. В результате в атмосферу попала мелкая пыль от обжаренных и перемолотых какао-бобов. Администрация фабрики уверила местных жителей, что никакого вреда здоровью «осадки» не принесут: порошок не задерживается в воздухе и сразу оседает на землю. Но «дождь» из какао-порошка — меньшее из всех зол, которые знавала история. Так, в 2005 году на головы жителей сербской деревушки Каджа Джановик падали... лягушки. Причиной явления стал сильный вихрь, который подхватил земноводных у близлежащего озера и принёс в деревню. В 2015 году в австралийском городке Гоулберн выпал «дождь» из пауков. Объяснили его естественным природным явлением, которое связано с особенностями процесса миграции пауков. В мексиканском Тампико в 2017 году прошёл «лёгкий дождь» из мелких рыбёшек. В китайском городе Циндао в июне 2018 года из-за сильного шторма в Жёлтом море прошёл дождь из осьминогов, креветок и морских звёзд. В Гондурасе же ежегодно в период с мая по июнь выпадают осадки из сардин и креветок.
