Have you ever seen a moonbow before? A moonbow is a lunar rainbow, formed when light from the moon is reflected and refracted through droplets of water. It is a relatively rare sight because the moon must be at the right angle and almost full in order to produce enough light. Clouds and city lights can obscure the phenomenon. ⠀ Enter Darlene and Theresa Tanner, two aurora borealis chasers from Alix, Alta. The couple drove about 100 kilometres to capture this rare sight - a moonbeam AND aurora borealis happening together - on Sunday night.⠀ ⠀ As the clouds started to close in, we noticed something up there in the sky, Darlene Tanner said. Bitter Springs from a different perspective 🌌 We set up on the bank of the pool and started playing around with painting the pool and trees with light. After a few shots we heard an almighty squeal from a wild bore and barks from what we think was a dingo. I saw a spaceship last night! Zipping by at over 17,000mph, the ISS is the most incredible feat of engineering created by humans, and pretty much anyone can see it. No need to travel, itll come to you! I downloaded an ISS tracker app (there are many and they all work well) so I could get alerts when this thing is overhead. During the pass, the ISS shows up as a bright star steadily moving overhead. Theres nothing quite like it in the sky. If you have a dobsonian telescope like mine, you can position it just ahead of where the station is moving, and catch it in the eyepiece as it zips by. Seeing the panels and radiators in real time is breathtaking. To get these shots, I put a high framerate camera in the eyepiece of my scope, and manually tracked the station while recording frames. Out of 25,000 frames the ISS was in 1500 of them. - @cosmic_background on Instagram

This is the last week to see Masayuki Shioda’s “Retinagazer” at Taka Ishii Gallery Photography / Film. Shioda has also produced “Retinagazer”, a book composed of previous works and based on the same concept as this exhibition. Through the process of making this book, the artist confronted his own works to trace his transformations throughout the years and make new discoveries in previously shot images. In “JIKAN” (2012), included in this show, he has shot a night sky with lens flare. The stars, which are far from us in physical and temporal distance, and the flare, a trace of the lens, come together in one image to create a new space. Transcending space and time, the artist revitalizes essential elements of photography through his consciousness to link them to the contemporary period. This exhibition will explore the compounded and evolving relations between the spaces of the individual works and their development and expansion as well as reciprocal effects in the exhibition space. Masayuki Shioda Retinagazer is on view through Sep 26. By appointment only, please make your reservation via contact form on our website. タカ・イシイギャラリーフォトグラフィー／フィルムで開催中の塩田正幸個展「Retinagazer」が最終週となりました。 塩田は本展と同じコンセプトでこれまでに制作した作品で構成する作品集『Retinagazer』を制作しています。その作業過程において、現在までの変遷を辿りながら自身の作品と対峙し、過去に撮影した写真から新鮮な発見と認識に出会います。本展にて展示中の「時間」（2012年）では、レンズにフレアを入れて夜空の星を撮影しています。物理的空間と時空間の両方に於いて遥か遠くにある星とフレアによるレンズの像が一つの画面に立ち上がり新たな空間が生まれます。時空を超えて、写真それ自体に内包されている根源的な要素が作家の気づきによってあらたに再生し、現在のこの時につながります。 展示においては、それぞれの作品が有する空間性と、またそれらが展示空間の広がりのなかでお互いに作用し、発展していく複合的な関わりについて探ります。 本展は9月26日（土）まで予約制にて開催中です。ご予約は弊社ホームページの予約フォームより承ります。 Image: Masayuki Shioda, “JIKAN”, 2012 / 2020, C-print © Masayuki Shioda #masayukishioda #takaishiigallery #takaishiigalleryphotography #takaishiigalleryphotographyfilm - @takaishiigallery on Instagram

•VIOLENT PASSION• • It took me quite a while to figure this one out, but then it finally all came to me after I realized what has been going on in my own mind. • With this project, I’ve been trying to connect these prompts to the current times, and lately I’ve had a hard time finding the passion and energy to fulfill them to my best ability. Every day grows more frustrating than the last, as the guilt of not being creative swells more and more and by the end of the day, you’re worn out from pointless stress and left empty from lack of completion. It’s a terrible cycle. It’s left me extremely confused and upset with myself. I couldn’t understand why I wasn’t doing something I loved. But then that’s when this prompt clicked. • When we get frustrated, we have a tendency to get violent, whether that be verbally or physically, that violence is pure passion. We aren’t thinking in that moment, the destructiveness just consumes you. And overtime, what you might end up destroying are the things around you, or even the things you may use to perform your craft. • And from those acts of violence, you are left with the aftermath, a moment of reflection for the destruction you caused; for a moment, you feel clarity. After days, maybe weeks of struggling to create anything with passion, you realize you’re staring a product of raw passion: destruction. You want to tame that side of you, and use it for productive passion and creation rather than destruction. It’s extremely difficult and something we all need to work on all the time, but it’s extremely possible. • Thank you for reading my babbling and thank you again to everyone who sent these prompts. I apologize for taking so long to get back on it and I’ll be continuing regular uploads. I’d also like to refer to an incredible song that talks about this idea: “Taming the Dragon” by Brad Mehldau and Mark Guiliana. It runs along the same idea and puts it in a very understandable perspective. I’d also like to thank @jamesraliegh and @gabetoyou (@gabe_builds) for helping me out with this one.
