- George Chapman, who murdered three women between 1897 and 1902. Chapmans victims were his mistresses, and although his motive is not known, it is possible he killed them to conceal his illicit affairs. Chapman was executed in 1903, and some believe he was actually Jack the Ripper.

FRANK SCHUMAN Developed in Northeast Philadelphia’s Tacony neighborhood in the early 20th Century, Shuman’s “Sun Engine” is a poignant reminder that while humanity has been slow to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, we have certainly not lacked the technology, or foresight, to do so. On the expansive lawn between an ivy-covered house and workshop at Disston and Ditman Streets, Shuman integrated his deep knowledge of glass, optics, and convection heating to create a powerful array capable of doing actual work. Tacony was a center for technological revolution during the period between 1890 and 1920. Frank Shuman was a world famous inventor who lived at Disston and Ditman Streets. Scientific American visited this community multiple times for such innovations as the casting of the mammoth statue of William Penn and all the domework adorning Philadelphias City Hall. This project was overseen by Francis Schumann, President of the Tacony Iron and Metal Company, the uncle of the inventor. Much attention was brought to this community as a result of Shumans numerous inventions, including wire glass and a gas mask so durable it was used in World War I. Shuman also was notable for solar power, having a solar powered engine on display during sunny days between 1907 and 1909. He later oversaw the worlds first solar energy plant in Egypt which pumped 6,000 gallons of irrigation water per minute. “One thing I feel sure of,” he wrote prophetically in a 1914 Scientific American article, “is that the human race must finally utilize direct sun power or revert to barbarism.” Based on the output of his device, he reasoned that an array covering 20,250 square miles in an unpopulated portion of Africa’s Sahara Desert would produce the same amount of energy as all of the coal mined in 1909. Displaying an understanding of the social value of solar, he urged “…all far-sighted engineers and inventors to work in this direction” not only for their own profit but “the eternal welfare of the human race”. #SAWTOWNUSA #DISSTON #TACONYVSGLOBALWARMING #HISTORICALTACONY - @tacony_19135 on Instagram

Happy Birthday to Samuel Adams, born #OnThisDay, September 27, 1722 in Boston, Massachusetts. This signer of the Declaration of Independence was a politician, brewer, and businessman. In the years leading up to the revolution, Adams was one of the first to advocate for independence and was elected to the Massachusetts Assembly where he organized the resistance against British taxation. In 1765, Adams and the Loyal Nine, a precursor to the Sons of Liberty, led the Stamp Acts resistance in the Stamp Act Riots. It should come as no surprise Adams also played an integral role during the Boston Tea Party. During a tense meeting at the Old South Meeting House regarding the removal of the Dutch East India Tea on ships in the harbor, it is alleged he rose from a pew and declared, This meeting can do nothing more to save the country! Historians believe this was a signal for the Sons of Liberty to destroy the tea while Adams remained at the Meeting House as a distraction. In 1774, Adams was appointed as a representative in the Continental Congress, where he was known as a persistent advocate for independence; two years later, he signed the Declaration of Independence. Adams retired from Congress in 1781 to support the Massachusetts constitution, and was elected as Governor in 1794. Adams is largely associated with the craft brewery named in his honor in 1985 by Boston Beer Company founder Jim Koch. Adams was never a brewer himself but did work for his fathers malt house, which was sold to breweries. A sole advertisement from the Boston Evening Post in 1751 remains, reading Strong beer, or malt for those who incline to brew it themselves; to be sold by Samuel Adams, at a very reasonable rate. Adams’ legacy lives on strongly in Boston; a statue of him stands outside Faneuil Hall and his grave is one of the most frequently visited in the Granary Burying Ground. Today, we salute the founding father for advocating the rights of the colonists and ultimately steering them towards independence. • • • #MuseumFromHome #Museums #DigitalExhibition #DigitalContent #VirtualContent #History #CultureFromHome #NYC #MuseumsOfInstagram #NYCMuseum #History #AmericanHistory - @frauncestavern on Instagram
