Honoured that our very own Sahana Ghosh and our contributor Anup Sharma were part of the The Pangolin Reports project which won the SOPA 2020 Awards - Award for Excellence in Reporting on the Environment Regional (English Language) Media. As part of this reporting project, more than 30 journalists from Asia and Africa investigated the illegal trade of the worlds most trafficked mammal - the #pangolin. Pangolins are small, solitary, largely nocturnal mammals known for their distinctive, armadillo-like appearance. The animal and their scales are smuggled through India’s northeastern states to Myanmar and then onto China and other countries, reported Sahana Ghosh. Tamil settlements in Manipur and their relatives in other states form a crucial link in this chain. International spotlight on the trafficking of rhino and tiger body parts, along with enhanced security, forced smugglers to shift to the illegal trade of small mammals like pangolins, wrote Anup Sharma. Après 5 ans, il est temps que je m’exprime sur le combat mené, de parler des expériences vécues au contact des rangers et des espèces sauvages, d’en rapporter les joies et les peines, les nombreux obstacles surmontés. Le braconnage qui détruit les animaux n’est que l’arbre qui cache la forêt de leur future disparition. Les scientifiques évoquent une sixième extinction en référence aux cinq précédentes, toutes issues d’événements cataclysmiques (éruptions volcaniques, chute de météorite, …). Ce n’est pas le cas aujourd’hui. Nous assistons non pas à une sixième extinction mais à une première extermination : celle conduite par notre civilisation qui au nom du progrès et de la rentabilité détruit le Vivant. Cette page Facebook sera désormais le lieu où je m’exprimerai librement, où je donnerai mon opinion sur les thèmes qui touchent notre Combat. Pendant ces cinq années, je n’ai eu de cesse avec mon équipe d’assister les rangers, de protéger les populations humaines fragilisées pour les accompagner dans la défense des espèces sauvages qui leur sont chères. Je me suis tellement consacré au terrain que j’ai oublié de vous parler de tout cela. Trop de personnes s’expriment aujourd’hui sur des sujets qu’elles ne maîtrisent pas, sans aucune analyse pertinente, sans réflexion, simplement en jouant sur l’émotion des femmes et des hommes scandalisé-e-s par la situation actuelle et future. Leur méconnaissance de la réalité leur a souvent permis de faire passer des messages dénués de sens, de tenir des postures incohérentes, éloignées de la réalité. Il est désormais aussi de mon devoir d’être actif publiquement pour apporter à celles et ceux qui le veulent les informations et faits issus de la réalité du terrain, et non pas des ressentis de pseudo experts. Il est temps d’ouvrir les yeux sans tomber dans les travers de ceux qui condamnent et ne font que condamner, de ceux qui parlent et ne font que parler. 𝐓𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐞! 🐘💉 Earlier this week, our team in Zinave National Park noticed an #elephant that was limping badly and dragging its back foot. The veterinary team from @savingthesurvivors were called in to assist. After sedating the elephant the painful wound was cleaned and treated. We were also very relieved to see that the injury was not as a result of a snare, as was first thought. The ranger teams from Peace Parks and the National Administration for Conservation Areas have been working around the clock, removing more than 4 000 snares from the park over the past 18 months. The elephant was soon on his feet again and off to find the rest of the herd - hopefully feeling much better than before! 💖 Through partnerships with organisations like @debeersgroup and @ezemvelokznwildlife, 169 elephants have been rewilded to Zinave over the past 5 years. - @peaceparks on Instagram

Following a report of a painted dogs den sighting in Sinamatela, our trackers Washington Moyo and Lephius Muyuni went to check it out. Behold, its the Lukodet pack and Didi, the alpha female, is denning! The pack has been off the radar for a while and tracking inside the park hasn’t been as frequent due to COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. We suspect this is probably the packs second den or so. Painted dogs normally move their pups to a new den site a few times during the denning period to avoid detection by other predators in the area that could pose a threat to the pack and the pups. Another reason is to avoid or reduce parasite infestations. The pups will stay at a den until they are about 4 months old. This is when they are big and strong enough to move with the pack. Unfortunately, the team did not catch a glimpse of the pups or get closer to the den as they were avoiding disturbing the site. Didi and other pack members were also jealously guarding the site against all sides. Last year Didi had a litter of 11 pups and 13 pups in 2018, though not all survived in both litters. We are happy the pack is well and growing even bigger and stronger. The last time we saw the Lukodet they were 16 strong. Luckily Zoe was in a car that eventually drove past who stopped and pulled her to safety to check her pouch, which contained a Joey. Zoe drove the joey to Anna knowing she was a Wires carer. One of the lucky pangolins that was recovered a couple of weeks ago was a large and heavily pregnant female who was later name Autumn because of the stunning colours of her scales. Autumn responded to her treatment well and was soon out foraging for ants on her nightly walks and picking up the weight that she had lost during in ordeal. Autumn has now begun the stage of her rehabilitation called soft release, where she has been released in an undisclosed location and will be closely monitored for the coming weeks to ensure that she continues to eat well and explore her new surroundings. As she is believed to be so close to the end of her pregnancy we are all waiting with baited breath to hear when the little one arrives. Providing her soft release goes well, mother and baby will then be able to continue their lives undisturbed by humans. Help us to keep helping them... Animals know. They can see kindness, and they seek it. Gary and Sara have had a few new arrivals to the sanctuary, some baby wombats and Amy the Cobargo Wee Wallaby. These cuties will receive a lot of love and care from them until they are sent out to other shelters. The wombats will go to an unaffected (by fire) shelter until they are a little older and will then return to Gary and Sara as this is his/her home. The mothers of these orphans will have taught their babies the layout of the land. Where to find the best feed and where to find water. They will not forget what their mothers taught them. Without a steady supply of water, keeping these darling bush babies long term is not feasible so Amy the wallaby is heading off to another carer shortly who has another wallaby the same age. This will offer company and comfort to the babies. Water is necessary for making bottles, washing pouches and basic linen items required to keep bush babies warm and clean. This is why a water tank is high on Gary and Saras priority list. A tank is still a little while off as they work through some challenges to get it delivered, but the wheels of progress are moving slowly. As we come into spring our rescue service is going to become busier and busier. The female flying foxes are getting to the later stages of their pregnancies and are going to start getting into trouble as they try to find enough food to feed themselves and their baby. We thought it would be a good idea to do a ‘Wildlife Friendly Gardens’ series. So over the next 6 weeks we will be doing a post on a way you can make your property safer for not only bats, but all of our native wildlife. Our first post is a 2 part post on our pets and how we can care for them more responsibly. We would like to start by saying that we love our pets, most of our rehabilitators and rescuers have pet cats and dogs. This is not an anti pet post, we just want to have a discussion. This first part is on dogs. Dog attacks are one of our most common reasons for flying fox rescue and the survival for these flying foxes is incredibly low. Now these are not mean or aggressive dogs, they are lovely family dogs doing what comes naturally to them. It’s our responsibility to ensure they don’t have the opportunity to hurt wildlife. The easiest and most effective solution is to let your dog sleep inside the house at night. This is becoming more and more common and is by far the best way to make your garden safe for nocturnal wildlife. The second way is to secure your dog in an internal yard or smaller fenced area during the night so they have less access to your garden. This is less effective but at least leaves a safe corridor for wildlife to move through your property. Dogs are lovely pets but they can be devastating for local wildlife if not kept responsibly. Additionally, dogs are one of the main reasons for koala fatalities which predominantly occur at night. So keeping your dogs in at night not only helps bats, but koalas as well! Thankfully this pair beat the statistics with Stella sustaining very serious but viable injuries from the dog. This is my pupper. His name is Toro. Hes 17 years old and just got back from a week-long stay at the vet hospital, where he was diagnosed with a myriad of chronic health problems. We knew this was inevitable because hes 17, but having an official diagnosis makes it much more real. He was also fitted with a feeding tube and we are spending a lot of time feeding and medicating him through the tube. An interesting update from our trackers in Mana Pools. The Nyamepi pack is well and has been doing a great job protecting its 6 pups. Whisky, the alpha female, left the den with the pups on the 26th August and have been nomadic since. She sadly lost one pup to hyenas a day after she became nomadic but the pack has managed to keep their enemies at bay since. They are doing so well compared to last year, where the pack lost 3 pups within 3 days of leaving the den. Fingers crossed, the pack will successfully raise all 6 to adulthood. Currently, the pack consists of 8 adults, one yearling, Candy (a product of father and daughter), and 6 pups that are a product of brother Gamma, the alpha-male, and sister, Whisky. Both are from the same litter of 2017 by the legendary Black-tip. I never really realised how unique and amazing the #Bilby was until recently. Their strange long legs and toes, enormous ears, odd gait (quadrupedal bounding overstep as they call it) and derpy head make for an unorthodox animal. After reviewing these photos and watching one cross the road the other night I can see how people fall in love with this weirdo. In retrospect it pains me to think I’ve never seen their tracks or burrows in the red #Australian deserts I’ve been too. Bilbys were once found throughout most of interior Australia but are now restricted to small pockets in remote areas, islands and fenced off reserves. @aridrecovery and the @australianwildlifeconservancy a are doing their bit to keep this #species going in fenced off reserves whilst we learn how to control the plague of #feralcats. Fenced off reserves are not the final the answer, but they are a part of the solution. They provide researchers with the perfect study area, conserve genetic #diversity and essentially buy the Bilby and many other #threatenedspecies time while we come up with an answer for a problem we caused. #Canon 60D, 40mm 2.8, 2 x #Nikon SB28s, @camtraptions PIR V2 and wireless triggers. This photo was taken at and with the help of Arid Recovery. A feral free fenced off reserve in #outback #SouthAustralia.
