It’s about the joy found in gathering for a meal. There are many reasons why to choose clay as cookware. On the one hand it is the artistic value of a cooking vessel that doubles as a serving dish, as well as the cultural connection to truly ancient cooking traditions. For the past 20,000 years, people have depended on it as a fundamental building material for shelter and tools. But perhaps most crucially for humankind, clay became cookware. Around the world, clay is still used for specific dishes whose qualities cannot be replicated with metal cookware. Clay pots fell out of favor as metal became cheap and plentiful, but the two materials are not equivalent. Clay cookware heats up more slowly and evenly than metal and holds and distributes heat more diffusely. Those qualities make it ideal for several cooking techniques and dishes: simmered soups and curries, braises or tender baked meats, as well as evenly and perfectly cooked rice or beans. Food cooked in a clay pot stays moist and hot, so generally less liquid and fat is necessary. . Under the limited possibilities of the quarantine, some students were still able to work on and finish their diploma projects. During this movement, Ive experienced a DISGUSTING amount of racism, hatred, betrayal, and carelessness. During this movement, Ive been called every racial slur under the sun, Ive been spat on, Ive had multiple guns pulled on me, Ive been assaulted, water has been thrown, glass cups and eggs have been dropped from balconies with the intent to harm us protestors. A countless amount of cars have driven through our crowds with the intent to harm us. Ive been laughed at, mocked and embarrassed. During this movement, I lost friends, I lost my dog and I lost a child... I can not begin to express the feelings of this movement. Ive received backlash from sooo many people WITHIN this movement. Those who are for the movement. Those who support the movement. When I took a week off, @iris.thats.creepy and many others on Twitter put our articles that I couldnt protest because I was hit by a car, when in reality I was going through a miscarriage, and the moment it was complete, I WAS BACK IN THE STREETS, because its bigger than me. It isnt about me. It is extremely disappointing to be in this movement and have people in the movement talk SO MUCH SHIT when they know nothing. Letting a session unfold. ✨ You know I love walking into a session {moderately prepared} aka having mental goals of skills & activities to be completed but being open to how the child is presenting, what they need that day, and what they want to do. #teamwork 🤝 I walked into this session knowing my focus was fine motor skills, core activation, and non-repetitive play. Here’s how it went: 1. Walked in & they wanted to play trains on their train track. 2. Played for a little then expanded to making/building a bigger track with Jenga blocks. Encouraged to crawl and do different animal walks around the big track to move the train. 🐸 3. Expanded to making “stoplights” with markers & dabbers (drawing circles then cutting and pasting onto the cut black squares). Took turns being the spotlight and directing traffic.🚦 3. Expanded to make tunnels by cutting strips of paper and using tape to shape them over the track. 🚇 4. Finally, expanded to taking the PJ Masks & Paw Patrols for train rides! 💺 Definitely didn’t plan for that full session before walking in but so happy it unfolded that way. “Using traditional craft processes such as feltmaking, weaving and papermaking I create sculptural and installation work that serve as meditations on trauma, memory and the legacy of emotional turmoil inherited from past generations. The theory that anxieties and traumas are embedded in a person’s DNA and are then passed down to the next generation is a major motivation in my artwork. Using repetitious processes such as feltmaking allows me to physically engage with and meditate on the concepts I am working with. Material exploration is the starting point for all of my work and plays a key role in building the conceptual backing of each piece. There is a Sisyphean element to both the physical labor and the conceptual ideas. Retracing the path of ancestors, repeating personal patterns, physically tracing the words from a written text – acknowledging both my place as a maker within this context and the irresolvable nature of the concepts themselves.” @fafniradamites . When I first heard [the phrase black people’s relationship to land”] it was a new perspective, to “have a relationship”. And so it kind of evokes intimacy. When I think about my relationship to land, my family migrated from Mississippi when I was three years old and my father always talked about going back home... So inevitably, every summer that was our vacation -- to go to Mississippi. I really appreciated the connection to grandmothers house. And I still remember to this day, this long, gravel driveway to get to her house, and this long porch. And on one end was a swing. When I declare myself as a story teller, thats the memory that evoked Porch Stories for me. Its like looking out at the world, looking out at the world from my grandmothers place, and my grandmother being my first storyteller.
