Join us today for a final #SeaOtterAwarenessWeek otter highlight, with our very own Schuster! Schuster has always been a bit shellfish, managing to take all the live enrichment for himself. The first time we gave live crabs to the otters he took all three for himself, even though he was only a year old and half the size as the other otters at the time. Recently, they were given crabs again. This time they were given four crabs for enrichment and Schuster took three of them while Nuka and Oswald had to share one! Schuster was originally found stranded as a pup with injuries along his side that were consistent with a shark attack. He was rescued by the Monterey Bay Aquarium and rehabilitated; however, he was not able to be released back into the wild. He arrived at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in February 2012. Schuster is often seen enjoying ice treats with toys frozen inside them. Schuster was immediate friends with Oswald and they can be seen playing together in their exhibit. - @oregoncoastaquarium on Instagram

Here’s some of our latest findings thanks to our Pinniped Monitoring Program and the amazing volunteers that collect this data! During August 2020, we found 98% of harassment occurred in less than or equal to 10ft. from a sea lion. Of that 98%, 78.5% of harassment occurred in less than or equal to 5ft from a sea lion. Our findings suggest people need to have a minimum distance of 10ft between you and sea lions when quietly observing them. We recommend 15-20ft to truly minimize our impact on them. Remember, these findings are just from the month of August, so data is likely to change. We additionally found 49% of the sea lions that charged or barked at a human for approaching them too close for their liking, were adult/subadult females (see next photo), while 19% were pups. This high response from females is expected, as they tend to be more territorial for their space and the fact that they have pups of only a few months old to protect. ____ It’s important to note that these aggressive behaviors of barking and charging towards people, again occurred in close proximities. So observe quietly from 15 ft away to watch their natural behavior at play 🥰. This large male sea lion, photographed by cameraman and team member @project.1z, came investigating on his own terms, without being chased by us. It’s their home, so please remember to be a responsible human being. Enquanto navegávamos pelas áreas queimadas do Parque Estadual Encontro das Águas, no Porto Jofre, encontramos uma família de ariranhas saudáveis, sem queimaduras, aproveitando o sol deitadas em um tronco nas margens do Rio São Lourenço. Ficamos alguns minutos ao lado delas, só assistindo essas cenas lindas. Após 10 minutos com essa família, deixamos elas em paz e seguimos rio acima documentando as áreas queimadas. Por alguns instantes, esquecemos que todo o entorno do ambiente delas eram cinzas. Esquecemos que mais de 85% da área do Parque foi consumida pelas chamas, esquecemos... O que não esqueceremos jamais é das pessoas que lutaram e ainda lutam para salvar o que pode ser salvo, nem dessa catástrofe ambiental que assumiu o triste título de pior queimada da história do Pantanal. Я помню осенью 2017 года на лежбище Северо-Западном острова Беринга мой бывший студент, а теперь коллега, работающий на Командорских островах, Сергей Фомин фотографировал самца-холостяка такой же необычной окраски. Он был хорошо упитан, хотя имел явные проблемы со зрением. Я обратился к нему за уточнением возраста того альбиноса, и Сергей сообщил мне, что видел и снял этого же самца в этом году! И на том же самом месте Северо-Западного лежбища, где он его фотографировал осенью 2017 года. Теперь он уже секач, достиг половой зрелости и ему 5-6 лет. Но находился на нерепродуктивной части лежбища. Т.е. в размножение в этом сезоне не вступал. Пожалуй, это первый документально зафиксированный случай дожития котика аномальной окраски до половозрелого возраста. I tried to find information on the age of similar unusual color of young fur seal, my former student, and now a colleague Sergey Fomin photographed at the Severo-Zapadnoe rookery on the Bering Island in fall 2017. The animal was 2 or 3 years old and physically in good shape, even it was clear it had poor sight. I turned to him to clarify the age of that albino, and Sergeн replayed me that he had seen and photographed the same male this summer again! In the exact location of the Severo-Zapadnoe rookery, where he photographed the animal in the fall of 2017. The albino is now matured bull 5-6 years old. He did not participate in reproduction this season and was seen on the bachelor section of the rookery only. The Australian Sea Lions have very distinct characteristics between the males and females. The males are dark brown with a light yellow mane around their heads. “A baby fur seal hides in a pot to avoid the stampede of adult fur seals on South Georgia, Antarctica. At first glance this moment might seem cute, but there is a both an irony and a dark history here: these pots were used to boil the fat off of elephant seals in the early 20th century - only one hundred years ago. Elephant seals were hunted for their body fat and fur seals were nearly wiped out for their fur.
