I’ve been struggling all week to decide if I wanted to post about this, and even more to find the right words to say. Last Monday night while at the BLM protest here in Asheville, I was very badly injured. My skull was fractured, there was blood and air in my skull, and I needed more than a few stitches. This wasn’t caused by rioters, or looters or anything like that. I was standing 10 feet away from the police line and I was shot in the face with some kind of projectile. By the police. In the face. While my hands were in the air. Thankfully I was wearing protective goggles or there is a real chance I could have lost my eye or worse. This is a screaming declaration as to why it’s imperative that drastic changes are made in police departments nationwide. I was not a threat and it’s unreasonable to think that I was. And even if I had been a threat, there is no excuse to shoot someone in the face EVER. I don’t care if they use “non-lethal rounds”, when used improperly they become lethal. I truly believe that most situations involving the police could be better handled with alternative civil services if given the opportunity. I’m asking everyone to reach out to local officials and call for reform. Redirect police funding into programs that can benefit, and even heal, communities across the nation. And more than anything PLEASE pay attention to local elections and get out and vote. My wounds will heal with time.
