Porsche 993 twin turbo - Five year maintenance time. Car up, bumper and exhaust off, turbos off, lower suspension removed, tomorrow is engine and transmission out. At that time most issues can be identified. So far inspecting the turbos shows they are too sloppy and will need to be rebuilt. Also some valves are burning white hot and others are a little rich. Post 995 Imagine waiting 13 years to get your new car? Almost two car life spans! Well that’s what Bill Gates did with his Porsche 959. (See what I did there?) But why would anyone do that for a car? Let’s go back to 1986. The 959 was the most technologically advanced supercar of its time, and one of the icons of the decade alongside its mortal enemy (release and performance wise), the F40. What was advanced about it? Not only featuring all wheel drive, a first for a supercar, but Twin Turbo technology and watercooling too. Subsequently the tech and styling would find it’s way onto the 911 platform. With just 345 made, (This was going to be a Group B race car prior to the regulations being cancelled so a minimum of 200 were to be built) hitting 200 mph (S model) and 0-60 in 3.7 seconds, plus the price tag of £145’000 (making a loss of an eye watering £500k on each car) it would capture the attention of many admirers. Cue the money men, making bank and winning life. In 1988 Bill Gates wanted the 959 alongside Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen and serial Porsche nut @jerryseinfeld. Easy right? Wrong! EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) regulations for safety and emissions meant the car wasn’t allowed in under normal channels; Porsche never had 4 to give US department of Transportation for crash testing in the first place. Gates however, imported his Silver 959 in. And then waited. And waited. And waited! The car was stored for THIRTEEN YEARS by the customs service in San Francisco until the Show or Display Law came into effect. Essentially, any car which had 500 units or less made, and which can’t be crash tested, can be brought into the country. The stipulation was a limit of 2500 miles per annum of use. This was helped into fruition by none other than Bill Gates. And his team of lawyers and his influential presence obviously. Word has it that prior to collection in 2001, the 959 accumulated some damage and had to be sent back to Germany for a freshen up. Porsche Carrera RS 1973 - One of the ultimate driving machines, unrivaled in sheer driving pleasure... RS stands for Rennsport in German, meaning race sport. The Carrera name was reintroduced from the 356 Carrera which had itself been named after Porsches class victories in the Carrera Panamericana races in Mexico in the 1950s. Got yelled at for taking this photo. This lady was unreasonably angry because she had a campsite about 30 feet from where I snapped this. In a span of 3 minutes, I watched her go from sternly suggesting that I move, to angrily yelling at me. It was unreal. I don’t know what I did wrong, but I’ll always remember her. This week one of our OP964 community members (Graham) shared a photo of his Sydney-based C2 pictured below! What immediately stood out was the unique colour that we had never seen before! As we later found out it is known as “Murano Green” and was a special PTS colour offered by Porsche! We had only heard of Wimbledon green so to see this was truly amazing...Graham later shared that this car originally came from #Singapore, which is amazing considering that #OP964 is currently Singapore-based. This was so amazing that we had to do some more digging and later find another pristine example in this shade: pictured above a #C2 located in Europe that we found on a forum.
