Im 17. Jahrhundert erlebte die bürgerliche Gesellschaft in den Niederlanden einen Wandel. Was zuvor eher belächelt wurde, schätzte man nun wieder: Das einfache Landleben der Bauersleute. Das zeigte sich unter anderem in den zahlreichen Besitztümern und Sommerresidenzen, die sich wohlhabende Regenten- und Kaufmannsfamilien fernab vom städtischen Leben leisteten. Auch bei Adriaen van Ostade ist dieser Wandel zu erkennen. Waren für den jungen Ostade die deftigen Bauerndarstellungen seines Malerfreundes Brouwer prägend, setzte Ende der 1640er Jahre ein grundlegender Wandel seines Stils ein. Seine Kirmes- und Wirtshausszenen stehen zwar in der Tradition des Bauerngenres, indem pointierte Kommentare und belustigende Belehrungen latent anklingen – es wird gefeiert, getanzt und getrunken –, aber nicht Ausschweifung und Leichtsinn sind Anlass der Darstellung, sondern die Zufriedenheit im Kleinen und die Freude an der Geselligkeit. Von den 50 Radierungen, welche Ostade zeitlebens schuf, wird in der Ausstellung ein erlesenes Konvolut gezeigt, ergänzt durch zwei Gemälde aus seinem Frühwerk. Damit wird die Bedeutung und der besondere Charakter von Ostades Radierkunst sowie sein Stilwandel zu einer einfühlsamen Handschrift nachvollziehbar. The Liberty Bell is known throughout the world, but few are familiar with the Women’s Liberty Bell. Known as the Justice Bell, it was commissioned by suffragist Katharine W. Ruschenberger of Chester County, PA in 1915 to be used on a speaking tour promoting a state referendum for women’s suffrage. The bell was driven through all 67 counties in Pennsylvania in the bed of a pickup truck with a banner promoting “Votes For Women” draped across the tailgate throughout 1915. Each stop included speakers, and in many cases, parades promoting suffrage. A second tour in 1920 ended at Independence Hall on September 25, 1920 when the clapper, which had been chained to the bell to further symbolize the lack of equal rights to women, was unchained and the bell was rung for the first time to mark the adoption of the 19th Amendment. There are so many wonderful photographs in the Museum’s archives of the horse-drawn vehicles used in Kennebunk in the late 19th and early 20th century. They were essential to move people, goods and information to places railroads and waterways didnt go. Horse-drawn delivery wagons remained in use well into the automobile age. It wasnt unusual to see milk, ice, or produce delivered by horse--especially in smaller towns like Kennebunk. Horses were well suited to the frequent stops and starts along a route and could negotiate poor roads better than early motorized vehicles. Before mechanical refrigeration, many Americans bought their perishable goods on a daily basis so enterprising merchants delivered groceries door-to-door in wagons. Historian Ken Joy gives this account of Charles Shepard who drove a delivery wagon from the railroad station to the stores downtown. “After he loaded his wagon at the station he would climb up to the sea, shake the reins and promptly fall asleep. Without guidance the horse would go down Summer Street, down Main Street into Garden Street and stop at the rear of the Curtis & Roberts grocery store. Charles would wake up and make his deliveries.” In 1902, rural farmers became more connected with the rest of the nation when Congress made rural postal routes--operated in only a few areas beginning in 1896--a permanent part of the postal service. Rural Free Delivery (RFD) was a boon to residents who were previously required to personally collect their mail in the nearest town. Elbridge Smith (1867-1933) used this light-weight mail wagon on his route in West Kennebunk. Many other rural carriers use d similar wagons some set up with a cash box, foot warmer and a small sorting desk inside. Elbridge delivered mail in this cart, now part of the collection of the Brick Store Museum, from 1902-1932 when he retired at 65. - @brickstoremuseum on Instagram

It is so peacefully hopeful to see photos of early Black Americans in rural farm settings and they’ve become my favorite types of photos to collect. I actually was gifted a similar photo of my great grandfather and his parents that Ill share one day! These types of photos beam with pride at what they accomplished and built with their hands! I image that in this photo, as far as their eyes could see, they saw fields of plenty. Corn, collards, butter beans, okra, squash, and sweet potatoes. Many Black American families in the south owned hundreds of acres in the early 1900’s that allowed them to insulate themselves with self sufficiency and opportunities for generations. Our early #Blackfarmers were some of our first business men and they understood the importance of land and inheritance. For them, land was a source of #freedom. We can only image the constant challenges southern Black farmers of the 19th and 20th centuries, many who had experienced slavery first hand, had to face daily to keep their land. The day to day tasks of planting, reaping, managing debts and taxes before quickbooks and keeping their children connected to the land had to be very challenging. I can imagine the satisfaction they must have felt from working their own land and knowing their toiling was not for the benefit of anyone else except their own families and communities. There had to be great satisfaction that rested in their souls from knowing their land had their FREE blood, sweat and tears embedded in the soil. Working and hopeful that not only did they plant crops for that moments harvest, but to know they had left seeds that would be reaped for the generations to come. #blackhistory #vintagephotos #ADOS #blackamericana #blackarchive #blackamerican - @black.archive on Instagram

Werksseitig als Modell M 25 (Mofa 25 km/h) oder M 50 (Moped 40 km/h) bezeichnet, gab es noch ein Modell M 30 (Moped 30 km/h) für die BASF mit dem Werksmodellcode 434. Die Fahrzeuge von 1965 bis 1967 hatten einen anders geformten Tank als spätere Modelle. HAPPY LABOR DAY!! It was September 1918 and the First World War was at its tailend. With many American men sent to the battlefield, women stepped up to perform jobs previously done only by the former. These included heavy work; case in point, delivering blocks of ice following what were called ice routes. Between the early 19th century and after WWI, long before refrigerators became commonplace in every home, the natural ice trade began and icemen—those who went around selling and delivering ice from wagons, carts, or motor-trucks everyday—were a common sight. The photograph above was taken on September 16, 1918; shortly after, the natural ice trade began to be overtaken by production of ice through refrigeration cooling systems and plant ice. Girls deliver ice. Heavy work that formerly belonged to men only is being done by girls. Interesting Classic Mercedes Find Sort of a “barn” find mercedes Ponton w120 180 petrol. Last parked inside a garage roughly in 1960... sees the sun after almost 60 years. Under the caked dust the Ponton has held up its original paint, original seats and dashboard.. everything is as it came new. Still has the old tires and the 6 volt battery with it.
