This isn’t to announce my birthday but rather an introduction to a lifelong story to show how dreams do come true and why I believe they still exist in this world. Ive been thinking over and over how to write this given how Au Revoir Simone and I have now become friends! Hopefully I can articulate how their music is truly a force and taught me the importance of music overall. 11 years ago I was 17 yrs old. I found out that my childhood idols, Au Revoir Simone, were recording their album in Sacramento where I grew up and was living at the time. So many emotions flooded me as I wondered why they would be in Sacramento of all places (theyre from New York). I reached out to them as I usually did because I was so emotionally invested and obsessed with their music. To my teen hearts surprise, they accepted my invite to meet at a coffee shop in midtown! Me, a super fan, a young teenager full of emotional energy and a soul that was melded by their music. They wanted to drink coffee with me and just me?! I remember I exclaimed my profound excitement through acts of gibberish as my mother watched her ridiculous child flop around the living room floor. It was one of those few surreal moments you get in your life that is so pure flabbergast but full of adrenaline and luck. Let’s go back. THEY were my first introduction into electronic music. Remember during Myspace days you were able to choose “that one song” to represent yourself? Well, one day I was on my cousin’s profile and her song of choice was “Backyards of Our Neighbors” by Au Revoir Simone I remember just sitting still, in shock. That day I refreshed her page over and over again just to listen to the song again and again. I don’t really quite know how to explain the feeling when a sound you never heard before or knew existed, hits your ear. It opens your world and changes your way of being, introducing you to many unexplored emotions in your life. That is what this song did for me. I have a hard time making commitments to myself. I’m way better at following through to commitments to other people. I’ve heard that it’s helpful for someone with this challenge to try to think about making commitments to the future self as if she is another person. . I tried. But then I began to think: this is bullshit. Future Josie is too abstract. But what about past Josie? Past Josie I can imagine. Past Josie has some substance... so I took inventory of all of the past versions of myself and I asked: what does she value? It turns out that the past version of myself who holds the values that I find to be most pertinent are the values of this little wild child. I’m guessing around age 5. She’s a pretty cool kid. I want to try to be the person she approves of. . She climbs a lot of trees. And plays in the mud. She has an elaborate imagination. She has memorized every word on every page of just about every Dr Seuss book. She likes exploring tide pools. When she doesn’t understand or needs help, she asks for it. She doesn’t care what people think of her. She laughs easily. . I’ve recently climbed a few trees. I still don’t mind getting dirty. I’m starting to recite poetry again. And though there aren’t any tide pools around here to explore, I can use my imagination to explore and find delight in the search. At times it is hard, but I’m also working asking when I need help, not caring too much what people think and laughing as much as possible. . Who is the past version of yourself that is the most true to who you are? What are you doing to make that past version of yourself proud? . Producer and rapper Pete Rock with an MPC! Along with groups like A Tribe Called Quest and The Roots, Pete Rock played a major role in the merging of elements from jazz into hip hop music. As one of the mainstays of 1990s East Coast hip hop production, he is often mentioned alongside DJ Premier, RZA and J Dilla! Here’s an interview excerpt where he talks about what gear he’d have for kids if he opened up a school, via a 2001 Rock On interview: [Rock On: What piece of gear would you start young producers on at your school? Pete: I would start them out on something simple like a [Boss] Dr. Rhythm, and then Id gradually move it on up to actual drum machines that are used in the studio. Id give them something they could play around with and sample. I would go through the steps with them and tell them what to do. Rock On: Was the SP-12 your first piece of gear? Pete: Yeah. Ive worked with other drum machines like the [Roland] TR-808, [Oberheim] DX, the Roland [TR-]909, and the Dr. Rhythm box. When the SP came out, it first was the SP-12 and then it was the SP-1200. The 12 had no disk drive; you had to use a separate disk drive with the SP-12. The SP-1200 already had one built in, and it provided a little more sampling time. Rock On: Were your first productions done solely on the SP-1200? Pete: Yeah, and Ive been using that ever since. Rock On: What about the Akai MPC-3000? Pete: I have that still. Im learning how to use that as well. Quienes somos? Mi mamá se llama Elena, es quien los recibe casi siempre y quien ambienta el espacio. Yo me llamo Martina y soy quien está detrás de las redes sociales. Tenía un año cuando compramos un Ph a reciclar en Villa Devoto. Mi mamá tiró paredes, levanto otras, y refacciono cada rincón como una obra de arte. Ella es artista plástica y docente, le encanta reciclar, le gusta leer, y estudia escritura. Es de Sagitario, elige el color naranja y el helado de sambayón. Yo soy actriz, recientemente egresada de la EMAD y me formo en escuelas de teatro desde chiquita. Los últimos años hice cine, y me dieron ganas de generar trabajo en relación al mundo audiovisual, por eso soy muy feliz de poder trabajar acá. Tal vez todo empezó en esta casa, con la cámara de mamá y ella dirigiéndome para que ponga caras antes de saber hablar (les dejo unos videos al final del post). También me gusta mucho organizar y gestionar cositas como buena capricorniana, y esto lo descubrí gracias a este espacio del amor. El helado? de chocolate y ddl, y un color... verde. La foto en la playa es simplemente porque nos gusta mucho la arena y viajar cuando se puede, por eso pintamos la terraza de Espacio el Margen color playita. La tercera foto es como somos ahora. #OnThisDay 20 years ago, a Palestinian freelance cameraman from Gaza, Talal Abu Rahma, shot a video of a father and his 12-year-old son under fire on the Salah ad-Din Road, south of Gaza City. The boy, Muhammad al-Durrah, was mortally wounded and died soon after.⠀ .⠀ The video of Jamal al-Durrah trying to shield his son as bullets rained down on them was aired by France 2, the news channel Abu Rahma was working for. It became one of the most powerful images of the second Intifada.⠀ .⠀ The Israeli government tried to challenge the veracity of the video, with the Israeli military denying that its soldiers had been responsible. It took until 2017 for a French court to vindicate France 2 and Abu Rahma, ultimately upholding their libel case against Philippe Karsenty, a French media commentator who had accused them of staging the video.⠀ .⠀ Abu Rahma, who has won numerous awards for his work, including the Rory Peck Award in 2001, is now based in Greece, where he, his wife and six-year-old son are residents. For some, it might’ve seemed like a real-life episode of “The Sopranos.” In 2004, three separate dark green Kenneth Cole suitcases, containing pieces of a dismembered body, were found in and around the Chesapeake Bay, near Virginia Beach, Virginia. The body was eventually identified as 39 year-old Bill McGuire, an employee of the New Jersey Institute of Technology, who lived more than 300 miles away in Woodbridge, New Jersey. The medical examiner determined that the body had been shot multiple times. His wife, Melanie McGuire, a fertility nurse and the mother of his two sons, was eventually convicted of murdering him and dumping his body. She was sentenced to life in prison. Thirteen years have passed since Melanie McGuires conviction. She’s now a 47-year-old inmate at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility in Clinton, New Jersey, where she claims that she’s not only innocent of killing her husband but that his real killer is still out there. What a Great Old Times!!
