The Liberty Bell is known throughout the world, but few are familiar with the Women’s Liberty Bell. Known as the Justice Bell, it was commissioned by suffragist Katharine W. Ruschenberger of Chester County, PA in 1915 to be used on a speaking tour promoting a state referendum for women’s suffrage. The bell was driven through all 67 counties in Pennsylvania in the bed of a pickup truck with a banner promoting “Votes For Women” draped across the tailgate throughout 1915. Each stop included speakers, and in many cases, parades promoting suffrage. A second tour in 1920 ended at Independence Hall on September 25, 1920 when the clapper, which had been chained to the bell to further symbolize the lack of equal rights to women, was unchained and the bell was rung for the first time to mark the adoption of the 19th Amendment. Heart warming article by the @washingtonpost looking at never before published images of men in love between 1850 and 1950 collected and curated by @lovingbynealandhugh . “Nini and Treadwell saw themselves in the two men in the photograph and were filled with so many questions about who they were. Neither of them expected that this photograph would become the first of a 2,800-image collection and that they would publish their own book, “LOVING — A Photographic History of Men in Love 1850s-1950s.” According to Nini and Treadwell about finding their first photo: “Our collection began twenty years ago when we came across an old photo that we thought was one of a kind. The subjects in this vintage photo were two young men, embracing and gazing at one another — clearly in love. We looked at that photo, and it seemed to look back at us. And in that singular moment, it reflected us back to ourselves. These two young men, in front of a house, were embracing and looking at one another in a way that only two people in love would do. Dating sometime around 1920, the young men were dressed unremarkably; the setting was suburban and out in the open. The open expression of the love that they shared also revealed a moment of determination. Taking such a photo, during a time when they would have been less understood than they would be today, was not without risk. We were intrigued that a photo like this could have survived into the twenty-first century. Who were they? And how did their snapshot end up at an antique shop in Dallas, Texas, bundled together with a stash of otherwise ordinary vintage photos?”. Hank Negley taped this photo on Stan Betz’ well-known paint shop wall in Anaheim in 1981, so I snapped my own photo of it sometime in the next three decades. It’s dated “El Mirage 1947,” but this classic hiboy was ahead of its time with a dropped axle, tube shocks, filled and peaked grille shell, hot rod louvered hood, and possibly the first V-ed spreader bar (he made the one for Joe Nitti’s car, too). That car would be perfect today. In the rare color photo that Hank loaned me from a few years later you can see it’s medium metallic green, he’s chromed the axle and lakes pipes, added whitewalls, and even changed to white upholstery. Jim Jacobs is my longest living friend, I gotta say. We go back a long ways & through many an adventure. It all started when I arrived at Jims house in the Massachusetts Berkshires tucked away on a 100-acre mountainside of white birches outside of Great Barrington, & here is where our friendship takes off & has never ceased. Weve been through thick & thin together. Too much to recount in the short space here. Jim has been continually supportive of my work & always looked after my welfare. He invited me to house-sit many a time wch provided the solitude I needed for reading & writing & for my photography. In 1971, Jim & I became deeply involved in the teachings of Don Juan/Carlos Castenada. We were a sight for sore eyes all in white, if you can imagine that! Ha-ha. How we arrived in London is beyond me now; but we did some crazy shit like purchasing a restored 1939 white Bentley convertible wch made us more mobile when we visited with Alexis & Luisa de la Falaise at their pony farm in South Wales, where we slept under 4 layers of patch quilts to stave off the bitter cold. I became their barnyard photographer. Then it was off to Paris in an all-day rain with only one windshield wiper working when we arrived at Café Flore & where I photographed Jim with our Bentley, winter 1972. Many happy roads & journeys, then as now for us. Jim has since evolved into one of the leading independent curators of modern art. Weve come a long way. Things you’ll learn in this Harlem Renaissance episode:⁣ ⁣ James VanDerZee was the unofficial photographer of the Harlem Renaissance. He began photographing his neighbor of Lenox, Massachusetts as a teenager, after having won an eight-dollar camera. He moved to Harlem in 1906. Initially he came to Harlem pursue a musical career since he was a skilled pianist and professional violinist. He even created and performed with the Harlem Orchestra. ⁣ ⁣ But in 1915, he moved to Newark, New Jersey and was employed as a darkroom assistant and photographer. He returned to New York in 1916 and moved to Harlem at the beginning of the Harlem Renaissance. He set up a photo studio called “Guarantee Photo Studio in Harlem” and the rest was history.
