Heres a fun #tbt, thanks to @eva_smidkeova for sending along. In 1937 the old Mystic in the McNear building was remodeled at a cost of $14,000. At this time the theatre was renamed to the State Theatre. The architect hired for the remodel by was A.A. Cantin. According to a Petaluma @arguscourier article dated Dec. 13, 1937, the theatre had not been occupied for some time. The Petaluma Theatres, Inc. (paying for the remodel) was at present occupying the theatre known as The Strand, in the Lepori building on Kentucky Street. Frederick Pinchon purchased Best’s Wines from Henry Best’s son Charles in 1920 for £10,000, and with it, the rights to use the name Best’s Great Western Wines. To those who love reading about Pasadena history or have researched its distant past, Hiram A. Reid is a familiar name. He is the author of History of Pasadena: Comprising an Account of the Native Indian, the Early Spanish, the Mexican, the American, the Colony, and the Incorporated City (1895), a voluminous book whose lengthy title is indicative of the books cyclopedic scope, which covers almost every aspect of Pasadena’s early history. A doctor by training, Reid wrote this comprehensive history at the suggestion of William Knight, auditor of the Mt. Lowe railroad. Whats interesting is that he initially thought it was a joke but then took up the idea of being a historian after much enthusiastic support from his wife and fellow Pasadenans. Gathering material and information for his book meant going from place to place, and so at the age of 60 or thereabouts, the venerable doctor bought a bike and learned to ride. It wasn’t easy at first and Reid had many a fall on his bike, but he soon became quite proficient at getting around on two wheels. Here is a photo from around the time of the book’s publication showing Dr. Reid and his wife, Addie, and their two adopted grandkids riding to church. The Pasadena Public Library has an original copy of Reid’s book plus a few reproductions. If you love learning about Pasadena’s rich history, his book is available for research at the Central Library and other branches. The Liberty Bell is known throughout the world, but few are familiar with the Women’s Liberty Bell. Known as the Justice Bell, it was commissioned by suffragist Katharine W. Ruschenberger of Chester County, PA in 1915 to be used on a speaking tour promoting a state referendum for women’s suffrage. The bell was driven through all 67 counties in Pennsylvania in the bed of a pickup truck with a banner promoting “Votes For Women” draped across the tailgate throughout 1915. Each stop included speakers, and in many cases, parades promoting suffrage. A second tour in 1920 ended at Independence Hall on September 25, 1920 when the clapper, which had been chained to the bell to further symbolize the lack of equal rights to women, was unchained and the bell was rung for the first time to mark the adoption of the 19th Amendment.
