#Onthisday in 1895, the Executive Council of the Republic of Hawaii paroled #Liliuokalani to her home, Washington Place. She had been arrested earlier that year on January 16, 1895. In early February she was put on trial and convicted of “not informing the Republic of Hawaii Government that her supporters were plotting to return her to power.” Her sentence of a $5,000 fine and 5 years hard labor was immediately commuted to house arrest. She was imprisoned in the Makai Diamond head room on the second floor of the Palace, then known as the Executive Building, from January 16, 1895 until she was paroled at 3:25 pm on September 6, 1895. Conditions of her parole included: - She was to “live in a quiet, unostentatious manner and to abstain from having political meetings or other gatherings at her home or attending such meetings elsewhere.” - She was not allowed to be away from her home Washington Place overnight unless she had written consent from the government. - Visitors were limited to personal friends and those visiting to conduct business. – Her staff was fixed at 13 men, 8 women, and their children. In February 1896, as a reward for having faithfully abided by these restrictions, her parole was modified. She was given permission to leave Oahu if she had written consent of the Republic of Hawaii. While the Auschwitz camp complex is one of the most infamous symbols of the Holocaust, a recent study found that 56 percent of US millennials and Gen Z were unable to identify it. The Auschwitz concentration camp complex was established in the spring of 1940 in German-occupied Poland. It consisted of three main camps: Auschwitz I, Auschwitz-Birkenau, and Auschwitz-Monowitz. Upon arrival, victims went through a selection process to determine who would be sentenced to forced labor and who would be sent directly to the gas chambers. One survivor from Auschwitz, Lilly Appelbaum Malnik, recalls arriving at the camp: They said, From now on, you do not answer by your name. Your name is your number. And the delusion, the disappointment, the discouragement that I felt, I felt like I was not a human person anymore. Registros das transformações urbanas do Rio de Janeiro As fotografias que apresentamos hoje mostram as obras de abertura da avenida Presidente Vargas, no centro do Rio de Janeiro, no início da década de 1940. A intervenção tinha o objetivo de melhorar as condições de circulação e saneamento da então capital federal. Com quatro quilômetros de extensão e 80 metros de largura, a monumental avenida foi inaugurada em 1944, ligando, numa linha reta, o centro da cidade à zona norte. As fotos deste post estão contidas no fundo Hélio de Brito, conjunto doado ao Arquivo Nacional em 1999 que reúne documentos do #acervo pessoal do #engenheiro civil Hélio Alves de Brito (1902-1978). Muitas dessas fotografias são registros de obras que provocaram grandes transformações urbanas na cidade entre o final da década de 1930 e início da década de 1940. Hélio de Brito participou ativamente desses empreendimentos. Ele ocupou os cargos de diretor de obras da prefeitura do Distrito Federal, em 1938, e de engenheiro-chefe do Serviço Técnico Especial da Comissão Construtora da Avenida Presidente Vargas e Esplanada do Castelo, entre 1938 e 1946. Tanggal 30 September malam, sejumlah prajurit Tjakrabirawa pimpinan Letkol Untung bergerak menculik enam jenderal dan seorang kapten: Komandan TNI AD, Jenderal Ahmad Yani, Letnan Jenderal Suprapto, Letnan Jenderal MT Haryono, Letnan Jenderal S Parman, Mayor Jenderal DI Pandjaitan, Mayor Jenderal Sutoyo Siswomiharjo, dan Kapten Pierre Tendean. Jenazah mereka kemudian ditemukan di sebuah sumur di Lubang Buaya, Jakarta. Panglima TNI Jenderal AH Nastion lolos, namun putrinya Ade Irma Suryani tewas, sementara ajudannya, Kapten Pierre Tendean, jadi korban, diculik bersama enam jenderal. Panglima Kostrad, Mayjen Soeharto bergerak cepat, memadamkan pemberontakan. Perburuan pada para pelaku G30S dilakukan cepat. PKI dinyatakan berada di balik gerakan pengambil alihan kekuasaan dengan kekerasan. Para tokohnya diburu dan ditangkap. Sebagian tokoh PKI diadili di mahkamah Militer Luar Biasa (Mahmilub), sebagian dijatuhi hukuman mati. Ketua PKI, DN Aidit yang dituding merancang gerakan ini bersama ketua Biro Chusus PKI, Sam Kamaruzzaman melarikan diri ke Jawa Tengah, namun kemudian bisa ditangkap, dan dibunuh. Terjadi penangkapan besar-besaran terhadap para anggota atau siapa pun yang dianggap simpatisan atau terkait PKI, atau organisasi-organisasi yang diidentikan komunis, seperti Lekra, CGMI, Pemuda Rakyat, Barisan Tani Indonesia (BTI), Gerakan wanita Indonesia (Gerwani), dll. My great aunt Winnie with my father’s older brother and sister during the Great Depression. . Winnie always has had a special place in my heart. I remember her as a very old, plump, little, blind woman who lived in an assisted living facility in Jersey City. . She was soft spoken with a little puffy cotton ball of white hair. She always wore cardigan sweaters. We’d visit her during the holidays and bring her a gift (probably a sweater). She would very slowly and very deliberately unwrap the gift and then fold the wrapping paper and tuck it into the side of her wheelchair. A few days before the Delhi Durbar of December 1911, people began to pour into Delhi from all parts of India and beyond to watch the coronation festivities. The roads were washed; oil was sprinkled to keep the dust down; and the city looked spick and span. Motor cars which had hardly ever been seen before, came into Delhi and raced on the roads; and horses and elephants were seen everywhere. Queer-looking carriages passed through the Chandni Chowk and the Chawri Bazar, and strange faces were visible all around. Most fantastic and colourful dresses rustled in the streets of Delhi from long robes to short coats, and gowns to waistcoats, and head gears of a hundred kinds. Near the Fort, the glacis was levelled into terraces, and the slope leading upwards towards the road was turned into hundreds of stands which encircled the whole of the Jama Masjid, and along the Esplanade Road. From end to end of the Chandni Chowk, the central causeway was turned into one long line of wooden stands. In front of the Town Hall and around the statue of the English Queen, one enormous stand was erected. The stands continued through the Fatehpuri Bazar with its majestic mosque and grateful shadows, and continued to the Mori Gate and beyond. All this made Delhi look more like an exhibition ground than the city which was once the greatest in Hindustan. The younger population became enthusiastic at the prospect of watching the procession of the King. A real king they had never seen; and the stories they had heard about royal processions from their elders seemed to be coming true at last. They were dying to see the big fair. For the residents of Delhi never miss an opportunity of enjoying themselves, and this quality is peculiar to Delhi-ites alone of all the peoples of India. Even during the terrible days of 1857, when the guns were spitting fire, they used to climb up on the roofs to watch the fun of cannon balls shooting red hot out of the cannons mouths, and compared the firing to fireworks during the festival of Shab-barat. But the older residents, who had seen a glimpse of the glamour of the Mughals and had witnessed the plunder of 1857, cursed the firangis. . . . #unzipdelhi - @unzip_delhi on Instagram

Although we couldn’t find an image of Rudyard Kipling with his ayah - we know from a variety of sources that he had one who he was close to. Rudyard Kipling mentions her in his posthumously published autobiography, Something of Myself (1937) - “Our ayah was a Portuguese Roman Catholic who would pray—I beside her—at a wayside Cross.” 🌹 According to other sources, when Rudyard was born in 1856, his delighted grandparents in England received a carte de visite photograph of baby Rudyard, showing him asleep in the lap of a dark-skinned Madras ayah, an upright, dignified woman, with a bare head and thick black hair coiled on her neck (Birkenhead, 1978, p. 11). 🌹 According to psyartjournal.com In 1985, psychoanalyst Harry T. Hardin persuasively argued that alienation between infant and biological mother may result when a close bond develops between an infant and its early primary surrogate mother--nannies, nurses, maids, or relatives. To end the surrogate caregiving is usually a trauma for the child; the development of interpersonal difficulties, in particular fear of intimacy, is one of several consequences of the loss of the substitute mother. Rudyard Kipling was known to have many temper tantrums and outbursts as a child having arrived to England from India, were a result of “first traumatic separation” from his ayah. To those who love reading about Pasadena history or have researched its distant past, Hiram A. Reid is a familiar name. He is the author of History of Pasadena: Comprising an Account of the Native Indian, the Early Spanish, the Mexican, the American, the Colony, and the Incorporated City (1895), a voluminous book whose lengthy title is indicative of the books cyclopedic scope, which covers almost every aspect of Pasadena’s early history. A doctor by training, Reid wrote this comprehensive history at the suggestion of William Knight, auditor of the Mt. Lowe railroad. Whats interesting is that he initially thought it was a joke but then took up the idea of being a historian after much enthusiastic support from his wife and fellow Pasadenans. Gathering material and information for his book meant going from place to place, and so at the age of 60 or thereabouts, the venerable doctor bought a bike and learned to ride. It wasn’t easy at first and Reid had many a fall on his bike, but he soon became quite proficient at getting around on two wheels. Here is a photo from around the time of the book’s publication showing Dr. Reid and his wife, Addie, and their two adopted grandkids riding to church. The Pasadena Public Library has an original copy of Reid’s book plus a few reproductions. If you love learning about Pasadena’s rich history, his book is available for research at the Central Library and other branches. During the First World War, commercial photographers took pictures of the Canadian Expeditionary Force units before they went overseas. Intended primarily as a visual record for the military, these images were also bought as mementoes by loved ones in Canada. The 2nd Divisional Cyclist Company, which drew men primarily from Toronto, Montreal, Kingston, Vancouver, Winnipeg and Halifax, arrived in France in September 1915. On the battlefield, the cyclists delivered messages or acted in a reconnaissance role.
