Have you been down to Bathurst & Lakeshore lately? Big things are afoot. Loblaws’ historic façade has been rebuilt and the long-awaited 21st century grocery store has finally opened its doors. In late 2015, the careful dismantling of the iconic art deco warehouse structure began. Brick by brick. Stone by stone. The original materials were catalogued and stored offsite while the new substructure was erected. Reconstruction of the facades began in the mid-2018 and is now complete. - @eraarch on Instagram

(1930/ÖNB/Wikipedia) Das Wiener Stadttheater (auch Neues Wiener Stadttheater) in der Josefstadt wurde 1914 von dem bedeutenden, aus Budapest stammenden jüdischen Theaterarchitekten Oskar Kaufmann an der Kreuzung Laudongasse, Skodagasse, Daungasse erbaut. Auf dem Areal Laudongasse 36 befand sich ursprünglich die Paarsche Reitschule gefolgt von der Eisenmöbelfabrik Kitschelt. Nach einem Umbau im Jahr 1918 durch Hermann Helmer diente der Theaterbau als Operettentheater. Nach 1945 wurde es von der amerikanischen Besatzungsmacht in „Rex-Theater“ umbenannt. Im Jahr 1949 erlebte das Theater die Uraufführung der Robert-Stolz-Operette Frühling im Prater mit Heinz Conrads und Peter Alexander unter der Regie von Hubert Marischka. Später nutzte der Österreichische Rundfunk das Haus für Fernsehaufzeichnungen. 1960–61 wurde das Stadttheater endgültig Opfer des damaligen Wiener Theatersterbens, das kurz zuvor auch das Wiener Bürgertheater und die „Scala“ (ehemaliges Johann Strauß-Theater) betroffen hatte. An seiner Stelle wurde das Haus des Buches (Architekt Georg Lippert) errichtet und von den Wiener Büchereien bis zur Besiedlung der neuen Wiener Hauptbibliothek am Neubaugürtel genutzt. Auf dem hinteren Teil des Grundstücks steht seit 1969 das 2. Adolf-Schärf-Studentenheim „Vindobona“ mit rund 230 Heimplätzen. My respectful gratitude to CLT (Childrens Little Theatre) - to Samar da , Suresh da , Kanai da, Kanishka da, Prafulla da and everybody else there for grooming me into a free spirited dancer. How can i ever forget Manjulika di for holding my hand and bringing me into the world of traditional dance forms of India? And my school Modern High School where I learnt ballet and remember performing as the Parrot in Parrots Training (Tagores Tota Kahini). I was thoroughly pampered by Mrs. Wilson De Roze and Mrs. Clarke. I was then in class four. I now realise how ballet has influenced my dance style and movements. I also remember as a child when I was in St Johns Diocesan School, how I would fall asleep on the principals sofa till the seniors were ready for rehearsals. I was in KG 2 then. How could I not grow up to be a dancer and to love dance with so much support from such people? Today we’re back at Borough Market for our post yoga oysters. I’ve been thinking about how Londoners have literally been eating oysters in this exact spot for almost a thousand years. Today we them with stout for a more authentic experience. . You’re probably tired of our weekly date pictures, so I’m posting these pictures of Brown’s Dairy from the Camden archives. I’m a direct descendant of Charles Brown who opened this dairy in 1790. These pictures were taken in 1903, the year it was demolished to make way for the Camden Town tube station which stands to this day! I like to reflect on my family history of running family businesses in this great city. It’s with a sense of extreme pride that I’ve returned to the town where my ancestors grazed their kine on Primrose Hill, among our many links to this ancient city. . Coming in from the colonies and hanging out my shingle on Leyton’s ancient high road is the greatest adventure I’ve ever undertaken. Testing my fortune in this great city is the greatest gift I could ask for. . Il est conçu par l’architecte milanais Andrea Scala (1826-1982) à qui l’on doit la réalisation et la restructuration de vingt-quatre grands théâtres, dont ceux de Pise, Milan, Florence, Trieste ou Catane en Sicile. Il se caractérise par un style néoclassique prédominant, une capacité d’accueil d’environ 1 200 places et une acoustique jugée à plus d’un titre exceptionnelle. Son inauguration s’inscrit dans le cadre d’une vision patriotique de la IIIe République qui a à cœur, par le contenu de la programmation, de diffuser la culture française. A história está presente no cotidiano de todo nós. Ela está na política, nas crenças, nos livros, por isso, o mês de agosto traz duas datas que comemoram essa ciência que estuda o comportamento humano e as mudanças na sociedade, o Dia do Patrimônio Histórico e o Dia do Historiador. O Dia do Patrimônio Histórico, 17 de agosto, marca o nascimento de Rodrigo Francom, em 1898, que, durante três décadas, foi diretor do IPHAN. A entidade tombou, em 1887, o Moinho Fluminense, que, atualmente, integra o complexo urbanístico Porto Maravilha. O moinho, que foi a primeira fábrica de moagem de trigo do Brasil, teve seu alvará liberado pela Princesa Isabel, servindo também de esconderijo para o então ministro da Fazenda Ruy Barbosa, em 1893, que precisou fugir de marinheiros durante a Revolta da Armada, no Floriano Peixoto. Já, Joaquim Nabuco, escritor e historiador, foi um dos fundadores da Academia Brasileira de Letras. E, por sua dedicação a história brasileira foi homenageado com o Dia do Historiador em 19 de agosto, dia do seu aniversário. Sabendo da importância da História e dos profissionais do segmento, o Centro de Memória Bunge preserva e torna acessível documentos como essa foto da fachada da Unidade Industrial Moinho Fluminense S.A. Rio de Janeiro; Meira S.A; 1952. Im 17. Jahrhundert erlebte die bürgerliche Gesellschaft in den Niederlanden einen Wandel. Was zuvor eher belächelt wurde, schätzte man nun wieder: Das einfache Landleben der Bauersleute. Das zeigte sich unter anderem in den zahlreichen Besitztümern und Sommerresidenzen, die sich wohlhabende Regenten- und Kaufmannsfamilien fernab vom städtischen Leben leisteten. Auch bei Adriaen van Ostade ist dieser Wandel zu erkennen. Waren für den jungen Ostade die deftigen Bauerndarstellungen seines Malerfreundes Brouwer prägend, setzte Ende der 1640er Jahre ein grundlegender Wandel seines Stils ein. Seine Kirmes- und Wirtshausszenen stehen zwar in der Tradition des Bauerngenres, indem pointierte Kommentare und belustigende Belehrungen latent anklingen – es wird gefeiert, getanzt und getrunken –, aber nicht Ausschweifung und Leichtsinn sind Anlass der Darstellung, sondern die Zufriedenheit im Kleinen und die Freude an der Geselligkeit. Von den 50 Radierungen, welche Ostade zeitlebens schuf, wird in der Ausstellung ein erlesenes Konvolut gezeigt, ergänzt durch zwei Gemälde aus seinem Frühwerk. Damit wird die Bedeutung und der besondere Charakter von Ostades Radierkunst sowie sein Stilwandel zu einer einfühlsamen Handschrift nachvollziehbar. Aviez-vous reconnu la Place des Mets ? Pas si évident ! Le bâtiment, au centre de la photographie avec son clocheton en bois, est lancienne chapelle des pénitents blancs. Les fenêtres voûtées et une partie de lencadrement de la porte sont toujours là aujourdhui mais cet ensemble a nettement perdu de sa superbe. La statue bien visible sur le cliché est une pietà (ou Vierge de Pitié) datée du XVe siècle, œuvre probable de lécole auvergnate. On la trouve actuellement dans la cathédrale. The monuments original intention was to pay tribute to Lancastrian Union soldiers killed during the American Civil War. However, today the Soldiers and Sailors Monument also represents those who have served in subsequent American military conflicts.🇺🇸 A statue of a robed woman at the top is known as the Genius of Liberty. The Genius of Liberty holds a drawn sword and a shield. Her head is crowned with stars. She faces north which, according to legend, allows her to turn her back on the former Confederate States of America, which were defeated in the war. The Soldiers and Sailors Monument also stands on the exact spot where the Second Continental Congress met during the American Revolutionary War on September 27, 1777, in the old Lancaster Courthouse. . 📍Ibarra 🚏Antiguo Cuartel Militar 🗓1930 ———————————————————————— ✒️📜La idea de crear una estructura militar de este tipo en la ciudad de Ibarra se debe a que en el tiempo de la Real Audiencia fue un sector estratégico desde la perspectiva militar. Durante el período republicano, en el mes de enero de 1858, el comandante Luis Villavicencio Leiva fue nombrado primer jefe de la guarnición de Ibarra y envía un informe al ministro de Defensa en Quito que dice: “el cuartel del batallón Calderón de Ibarra está compuesto por 705 integrantes, ocupamos una casa maltrecha frente a la plaza llamada de la Merced”. En agosto de 1868 ocurre el terremoto de Ibarra y no quedó ninguna evidencia de aquel cuartel militar que en otros tiempos albergó a los batallones Záparos, Pichincha, Mariscal Sucre, Yaguachi, Ricaurte y Vencedores. En el año de 1907, el mayor Joaquín Delgado, comandante del batallón Jaramijó N⁰ 8, construye un nuevo edificio bajo la supervisión de José Domingo Albuja, quien trazó los planos dándole una configuración medieval y al siguiente año se inaugura la parte frontal. De esta forma nace el Antiguo Cuartel Militar de Ibarra, ubicado en las calles José Joaquín de Olmedo, entre Juan José Flores y García Moreno. Esta edificación emblemática de la ciudad, desde la década de 1980 cambia su administración, el cuartel deja de ser de los militares para ser administrado por una institución pública. En el año 2000, la Municipalidad de Ibarra presenta la propuesta de convertir al cuartel en un museo, pero no es hasta el año 2013 que esta propuesta se pone en marcha consiguiendo los recursos para su remodelación. Αποτελούσε την κατεξοχήν τουρκική συνοικία της πόλης με κέντρο τη σημερινή πλατεία 1821. Σήμερα στη βορειοδυτική άκρη της υπάρχει η βενετσιάνικη εκκλησία του Αγίου Ρόκκου, ανατολικά της πλατείας η εκκλησία του Αγίου Νικολάου και στο κέντρο ένας τεράστιος πλάτανος. Κάτω από τον πλάτανο υπήρχε ένα οκτάγωνο αραβικό κιόσκι, στο οποίο είχαν δικαίωμα να κάθονται και να απολαμβάνουν τον καφέ τους τιτλούχοι της πολιτείας και επιφανείς μπέηδες και αγάδες. Πάνω στον συγκεκριμένο πλάτανο οι Οθωμανοί, στις 19 Μαΐου 1821, απαγχόνισαν τον επίσκοπο Κισσάμου Μελχισεδέκ. Ανάμεσα στην εκκλησία του Αγίου Νικολάου και τον πλάτανο βρίσκεται η τουρκική υπόγεια κρήνη, η δεξαμενή της οποίας είχε τέτοια χωρητικότητα, ώστε να καλύπτει την πόλη των Χανίων για έξι μήνες. Τα τελευταία χρόνια η συνοικία της Σπλάντζιας έχει μεταμορφωθεί από φτωχή περιοχή με σκοτεινά σοκάκια σε μια από τις πιο δημοφιλείς συνοικίες της πόλης. Caravaggio created this masterpiece in 1608 during his stay in #Malta and was commissioned by Knight Fra Ippolito Malaspina. He wanted this painting for his own place in Valletta. In fact, Malaspina’s emblem is found on the bottom right of the painting. 🔎 Serie 4: ...de alcohol y muertes. En Haría se produjeron varias muertes “extrañas” a principios de 1963. 📍En aquella época, María Elisa Álvarez Obaya era la Inspectora Farmacéutica Municipal y sospechó que podía tratarse de una intoxicación por metanol debida al consumo de aguardiente. A pesar de la oposición de muchas personas (la farmacéutica era una mujer y no era especialista en la materia) y con el apoyo del equipo municipal, María Elisa inmovilizó los productos sospechosos requisados en comercios y bares de la zona (procedían de las bodegas Lago e Hijos, de Vigo). 🔬Con los escasos medios de los que disponía, la farmacéutica estudió los contenidos de las garrafas de ron incautadas, comprobando la presencia de metanol. Posteriormente, se realizaron minuciosas investigaciones en todo el estado, analizando licores y otras bebidas. El juicio por este fraude alimentario tuvo lugar a finales de 1967, cuatro años después de las primeras muertes y casos de ceguera. Once personas fueron condenadas por su participación en este delito. 🎖María Elisa fue distinguida por la Real Academia de Farmacia y por el Ayuntamiento de Haría con la Medalla Carracido. Am currently in the process of digitising all my B&W negatives - oh wow, what a walk down memory lane! Brings back memories of many many happy hours spent in the darkroom and the thrill of seeing an image slowly appear under the developer solution as the developing tray is gently rocked. I miss it dearly. LA MONEDA ▪︎ LA GRAN JOYA DE LA CAPITANÍA. Parte 4 de 5 ▪︎ La Construcción. . Hacia 1784 se logó conjugar el proyecto, el emplazamiento final y los materiales. Estos últimos son parte de nuestro paisaje físico, cal de la hacienda Polpaico, arena y áridos del Rio Maipo, piedras coloradas del Cerro San Cristóbal, piedra blanca del Cerro Blanco, madera noble de Robles y ciprés de los bosques Valdivianos, 20 tipos de Ladrillos de los hornos de Santiago para la construcción de dinteles, remates, molduras, pisos y muros de más de un metro de espesor y rematados con cerrajería. . Toesca falleció antes de ver finalizada la obra. Y, 6 años después, en 1805, se llevó a cabo su inauguración oficial por el Gobernador Luis Muñoz de Guzmán. . Desde 1846 se transforma en el centro administrativo de la República, sede del poder ejecutivo y residencia de los jefes de estado. . El Presidente Manuel Bulnes traslada el poder ejecutivo desde el Palacio de la Real Audiencia, actual Museo Histórico Nacional, a la Casa Real de la Moneda. Producto de lo anterior, el edificio debió ser dividido en tres sectores, Casa de Moneda, Sede de gobierno y residencia de los presidentes. . En el primer gobierno de Carlos Ibañez del Campo se promovió un concurso público de arquitectura para la remodelación de la fachada sur de la Moneda, los arquitectos ganadores fueron Josué Smith Solar y José Smtih Miller. La oficina propone repetir el diseño de la fachada norte, original del proyecto de Toesca. En esta misma época, se realizo un esfuerzo urbanístico relevante para la imagen de la Ciudad de Santiago, el cual comenzó a gestarse con el proyecto del “Centro Cívico de Santiago”. La misma oficina procedió a la planificación del proyecto en conjunto con el Urbanista Austriaco Karl Brunner, quien brindo la composición física colindante a la Moneda, otorgándole una escenografía y un protagonismo al edificio transformándolo en una obra monumental. Para tal efecto se consolido el sector norte del palacio, despejando y liberando de edificaciones de esta zona generando la Plaza de la Constitución (1942). Did you know that our beautiful Sacred Garden was created in 1920? At one time, the area was just an open space nestled between the bell wall, Great Stone Church and the Sala. Beginning in the fall of 1919 the Mission’s then Pastor, Father St. John O’Sullivan designed the area into the lovely space we see now that has become a popular spot for marriage proposals and family photos. In 2015, thanks to our generous donors, supporters and Mission Preservation Society Members, the Sacred Garden received much needed preservation treatment including cleaning and repairing the now 100-year-old fountain. REFLECT on past moments and create new memories in #Hokitika Crowds surround the Town Clock for peace celebrations in July 1919, seven months after the end of the First World War. The once grand Government House stands at right, behind trees in Sewell street. It was pulled down and replaced on the same site by the now doomed RSA War Memorial Hall. Old Ipswich Postcards - Grimwades. Founded in 1844 by Richard Grimwade, a tailor located in Westgate Street. And generations later, this building on the Cornhill continues as a landmark. Kokotova Kula 🏛️ Nekadašnje raskošno imanje sa baroknom palatom i velikim brojem pripadajućih objekata samo je dio bogate zaostavštine čuvenih pomoraca i trgovaca dobrotske porodice Dabinović. Predmetni kompleks nastao je i razvijao se kroz više od 3 vijeka, a smatra se da je baroknu palatu kao izraz vrhunca moći porodice krajem 17. vijeka podigao Đuro Dabinović zvani Kokot. Pored baroknog sklopa i složene hronologije, naročito je značajna zapadna fasada palate, prema moru, koja je izrađena od najfinijeg korčulanskog kamena, sa raskošnim baroknim dekoracijama, otvora prozora i vrata, vijenaca, ograde i konzola balkona. Kompleks danas predstavlja napuštenu ruševinu išaranu grafitima, utopljenu u more okolnih savremenih objekata podignutih na nekadašnjem vlastelinskom imanju, znatno većem od onog koje danas zatičemo. Ipak, njena raskošna ljepota i arhitektonski sklad su neupitni, pa iako je u zapuštenom stanju, predstavlja biser arhitekture Dobrote i Kotora.
