On this day in 1942, the Rohwer Concentration Camp was opened in Arkansas. On this site, approximately 8,475 Japanese Americans would be incarcerated in the Deep South. That being said, the incarcerees would be forced to face the harsh weather that comes with being imprisoned in a swamp. It was due to these conditions that it was not unheard of for the camp to flood. Aside from avoiding the swarms of mosquitos, the incarcerees of Rohwer found ways to keep themselves occupied. Loving seeing everyone’s memories of #mysydney2000 .... yesterday was 20 years ago that I brought the Olympic flame into Bondi Beach as part of the Torch relay - the day before the opening Ceremony for the Sydney Games. I was 14 years old and I had one of the most visible legs of the relay in a city full of Olympic fever. There were thousands of people lined on the cliffs watching the flame come in, not to mention the air and sea escort we had of people trying to get close to it. I had never seen anything like it and I had no clue what I was actually doing until I saw the crowds. I passed the torch around when we got to North Bondi so we could all take it in. And of course, we decided we should catch a wave, much to the horror of all the helicopters covering it for tv. These boats are a quarter of a tonne and we needed to wait for one big enough, plus we knew we only had one chance. After waiting for a while we chose one - when it was apparent we were going to catch it the crew started yelling at me. Stand up!! Get up!! Which resulted in the photo here that went a little bit around the world. I hit the beach and the crowd went nuts, broke the barricade and rushed me, resulting in my assigned security team having to come in to get me and drag me through it. To this day probably the most surreal experience of my life. And I still have the torch. Ett Kustbevakningsfartyg i Göta kanal? Det hör inte till vanligheterna och KBV 307s genomfart har väckt en hel del intresse. Resan har gått från Strömstad, ner längs västkusten, genom Göta kanal och över Östersjön till Gotland där fartyget ska tjänstgöra framöver. Besättningen lämnade Tjörn i fredags och nådde Visby igår kväll. Resan genom Göta kanal tog cirka 2,5 dygn och förutom allt slussande blev det en hel del trevliga möten med nyfikna förbipasserande. Seattle won the 1917 championship by defeating the National Hockey Association’s Montreal Canadiens three games to one by a combined score of 23–11. The heavily favoured Canadiens trounced the Metropolitans 8-4 in Game One despite only arriving in Seattle that morning. But, the Mighty Mets were resilient. 2020 has been a difficult year for many Australians as we all face a multitude of challenges, making it even more important for us to ask our friends, family and colleagues, ‘Are you OK?’ One of CareFlight’s aircrew officers, Eric (left), is keen to encourage people to have a conversation with each other and remove the stigma around mental health. “There is this misconception that people working in aviation and healthcare are superhumans who are emotionally bulletproof, when actually, we are some of the more susceptible people to feeling helpless and disconnected. The community doesn’t have that clarity on the pressures of the job and situations that we face, particularly when organisations like ours are helping the most vulnerable Australians,” said Eric. “It can be an awkward conversation to have, but it is better to have that chat than not have it at all. It just takes one person to speak up about how they are going and this is the most powerful thing you can do for a friend or colleague; you are letting them know that it is OK to experience the ups and downs in life. If you are in a work environment, it’s worth developing trusting relationships with colleagues to nurture the opportunities to have a check in.” Speaking from personal experience, Eric said it took him some time to realise that he needed help. Eventually, it was a friend who encouraged him to seek help after a conversation. “While it is important to be there for someone, we also have to ensure that we ask ourselves the question. The more open conversations we have, and the more stories are shared, we can break down the stigma together.” This year’s R U OK? Hello all! We’re all very pleased to announce the total findings from the beach clean. 113.7kg of rubbish was found by around 80 volunteers this morning on castle beach and going round near pendennis point too! It’s been a really amazing effort and we’ve all enjoyed it, we hope you all had a fab day too! Also a big thank you to whoever helped to clear the sand and seaweed from outside the cafe and along the walkway, it wasn’t at all necessary and everyone’s generosity really helped us and saved us weeks worth of time! Special thank you to who organised the event @onebagbeachclean it was amazing to see everyone down helping out their community to benefit the environment! Really great to see! ❤️❤️ Unfortunately we’re not going to open again until the new season starts which will be end of March however if there’s any particularly good weathered days, we may decide to open the cafe and if so, it will be mentioned on our Facebook page and here on the Instagram page too!
