PART 2 RED WINE FACTS 4. Young red wines are better for you than old red wines. Young red wines contain higher tannin levels than any other type of wine. So, even though we have been told that old wines are the best if you look for the one with more Procyanidins go for the younger reds. 5. The colour of the red wine comes from the grape skins. The colour of the wine comes from a specific pigment called anthocyanin, that is found in the skins of red grapes. 6. The red wine colour becomes lighter as the wine age. As wine ages, the colour becomes less; for example, very old wines are pale and translucent in colour. 7. Nearly all red wines come from one species of grape. All of the most common red wines (Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Pinot Noir etc.) come from just one species of grape: Vitis vinifera. Vitis vinifera is commonly considered the wine grape species and it came from Eastern Europe. 8. Red grapes are older than white wine grapes. It is thought that the yellow and green-coloured grapes come from a DNA mutation of red grapevines. And since Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc share the same DNA, this is a pretty convincing hypothesis. 9. Red wines commonly contain fewer sulphites than white wines. This is because red wines tend to be more chemically stable than white wines and do not degrade as quickly. Happy to be finally publishing the work that I have been doing with the team at Superunion Hk for @agricoladargenio, a family company that has been producing extravergine olive oil for 3 generations. With @manu.darg now taking the reins of the family business we wanted to mark this moment with a limited edition of 300 bottles branded ‘Figlia’ @figlia_oliveoil celebrating a more sensitive and feminine side of nature. Since the beginning Emanuela clearly expressed the desire to create an object that could live beyond its original function; to be kept and repurposed. With that in mind we started looking into ceramic, which is typical in Puglia, and quickly fell in love with the tactile qualities of the material and its sense of visual ‘softness’. The shapes, inspired by the feminine form, were individually crafted to be completely unique and reflect the beauty in individuality and imperfections. We decided to leave them purposefully unadorned, aside from a stamp on the base, so that the shape could be accentuated. On top of that we liked the idea of mirroring the uniqueness of each bottle with a series of illustrations based on a similar principle of asymmetrical balance which helped to add a surreal touch to the overall brand aesthetic. The Nenah Classic Crest paper and blind embossing just added that final touch to the project. As I carried my third child, I thought a lot about how my body held and sustained him as he grew and developed within. Now that he is born my body continues to provide for him and sustain him, just as it does my other two children. My vessel carries the love, knowledge and strength that it takes to care for them. In more recent months, as we have been experiencing a pandemic, political unrest and moral turmoil, I have thought about how my beliefs, experiences and agency—all held within my own vessel—affect the world around me. As I have been creating these works I have thought about the ways in which our vessels have the capacity to carry others in their time of need. To be filled with love for our brothers and sisters, whether or not we have the same view point. To hold empathy and love by seeing others as ourselves. Universal pottery was started in Cambridge, OH by a group of businessmen in 1934. The ballerina line pictured here was produced in the 50’s. In addition to the solid colors shown here (dove grey, jade green, periwinkle, and jonquil yellow) Ballerina plates were printed with floral patterns including the cattail design. Cattail was such a popular pattern, Sears came out with a matching kitchen table. Universal potteries sold their lines to grocery stores, movie theaters and cinemas. I love the vintage styling and copy in these ads. These plates will, “captivate your guests or (fit) a cozy just-for-two occasion.” Check out the mismatched taper candles in the retro table setting.
