George Polgreen Bridgetower: An African Prodigy in England 1789-1860. An outstanding violinist. Best known for his association with Ludwig van Beethoven, who wrote the piece Kreutzer Sonata just for him to play in 1803 (the full title was Sonata composed for the Mulatto). The composer praised him as “a very capable virtuoso who has a complete command of his instrument”. He was born in Poland to a West Indian father and German mother. He moved to London at an early age and was performing in theaters by the age of ten. The scope of Bridgetowers career in Europe becomes apparent when one sees what was written about him in late eighteenth-century English, French, and Austro-German newspapers, memoirs, and journals. By the age of twelve he was recognised by Londons musical intelligentsia as a respected member of its artistic community. By 1799, he performed in approximately fifty publicised concerts as a soloist or a principal musician. How did Bridgetower overcome some of the obvious racial barriers of his day? (1) He had an entreprenurial father who brought his son to the attention of the English aristocracy; (2) He was so skilful that he gained the unwavering financial support of that aristocracy; (3) For his day he had an above average education - a factor that often facilitated the rise up the social ladder in Georgian England; and (4) He won the support and friendship of George, Prince of Wales, later George IV of England. Bridgetower eventually fell out with Beethoven over the snub of a mutual female friend, he obviously deserves much more attention for the contributions he made to Classical music performance. - @blackmusichistory on Instagram

𝗙𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘁. 𝗩𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝘂𝗹 St. Vincent de Paul was born to a poor family in a French village in the late 1500s. He was ordained in 1600, having been educated by the Franciscans, before being captured by pirates and sold as a slave. Having escaped two years later, St. Vincent de Paul would go on to found the Congregation of the Mission (Vincentians, or Lazarists); visiting, preaching, feeding, and nursing the sick poor. He established hospitals, and with St. Louise de Marillac, cofounded the Daughters of Charity, the first non-cloistered religious institue of women devouted to active charitable works. Vincent de Paul also helped reform the clergy in France, conducting retreats, providing clerical training, and being instrumental in establishing seminaries. Referred to as The Apostle of Charity, and The Father of the Poor, like Vincent de Paul, we too are called to help those around us, and as patron of all charitable societies, let us pray to St. Vincent de Paul, for all such charities and the work they carry out. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a Catholic charitable organisation dedicated to the service of the poor, was founded by Blessed Antoine Frédéric Ozanam in 1833. 155 years ago on June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger informed the people of Galveston, TX that slavery had ended. Sometimes called Liberation Day, Freedom Day, or Jubilee Day, Juneteenth commemorates that day. Although not yet a national holiday, it is recognized in nearly every state. • On Juneteenth 2020, we share two daguerreotypes, each depicting an African American. Dating to the 1840s, the first was created more than a decade before the American Civil War began, while slavery was still legal in the southern United States. It features an elderly woman who appears to be in her 70s, placing her date of birth in the 18th century. She wears a white lace bonnet and collar and a dark-colored dress. Although she – and her photographer – remain unidentified, the daguerreotype speaks volumes about the woman, particularly her status as a literate member of society: she holds a book and eyeglasses and one arm rests near a stack of books. • @zoebgarrett researched the other daguerreotype, an image of Jeremiah A. Wade, a Civil War veteran from Ohio. Born in 1829 to parents who identified as “Mulatto” in census records, Wade did, too, until early 1862, when he listed his race as “White” to enlist in the Union Army when black Americans could not yet serve. He died in 1898 and was survived by 7 children. Wade’s photograph was taken by James Presley Ball, a well-known African-American photographer who documented the horrors and triumphs of life for 19th-century black Americans. He documented lynchings and photographed Frederick Douglass as well as celebrations of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862. 412-414 (172-174 old numbers) Washington Street. Originally built in 1853 as an Armory, which helped supply troops with guns and ammo throughout the Civil War. ¤ In 1881 and again in 1893 the building was remodeled slightly becoming the new home of the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows. Celebrations and gatherings of all kinds were held at the Odd Fellows Hall, decorations provided of course by United Decorating ¤ In the 1920’s the Odd Fellows moved to 227 Washington and the Palace Garden began to occupy the space. Much like its predecessor, the Palace Garden was a hall that often hosted cabarets and a variety of other performances. ¤ The building was once again renovated to its current appearance. Information about the “Lining Store” appears to be nonexistent. In the 1940s it was the home of W.T. Grant Department Store. A wooden escalator was installed to transport customers between the two massive store floors. ¤ In the 1970’s 412-414 became Queens Department Store, a local favorite for everything and anything boasting, “Queens Will Treat You Right.” Eventually Blockbuster moved into the space, but sadly closed in 2011. Jika ada yg berpikiran bahwa pada perang Napoleon, pasukan pemanah sudah tidak dipakai lagi, maka salah. Pasukan Kavaleri pemanah Kuda masih digunakan oleh pasukan Rusia. Nama unit pasukan pemanah tersebut adalah Bashkir. Bashkir sendiri juga nama daerah, di utara Kazahkstan, tempat dimana pasukan tersebut direkrut. Diperkirakan lebih dari 10.000 unit Kavaleri Bashkir ikut dalam pertempuran ini. Dan unit ini bisa dibilang cukup efektif, dalam menghadapi pasukan Prancis. Kenapa begitu?
