Happy #FossilFriday! Great day for #fossil collecting on the Iron Range today with the Hill Annex Paleontology Project! We’re finding approx. 100 million year old marine #fossils like these great #shark teeth! 🦈 Keep scrolling to see this amazing Ptychodus tooth I found today! It’s black and kinda bell-shaped. Best one found so far at this site. They’re a weird extinct form of #shark with shell-crushing teeth. 🦈 It was just sitting right there! And then it got even better with a #crocodile tooth! 🐊❤️🐊 Favorite thing to find at this site! This is almost definitely from the long extinct Terminonaris, a big croc with a long snout. I also got to break in my new field hat! We just got these in so now I can represent @sciencemuseummn while finding #fossils in Minnesota! Team, this is what Project 033 is really about. Supporting the horses so the babies remain safe. Before leaving Care for Wild, I helped with a feed for Yster & Anchor. Both these rhinos saw their moms be slain by poachers. It took #CFW 8 days of around the clock work to keep Yster (left) alive and to get him outside in the sunshine for the first time. Today is World Rabies Day. This deadly disease impacts both humans and wildlife. We acknowledge this day by raising awareness about why and how to prevent the spread of this deadly zoonotic disease. Rabies was first diagnosed in South Africa in 1893. In 2007, after an absence of nearly 30 years, rabies re-emerged in the Ehlanzeni District (particularly Nsikazi & Bushbuckridge) bordering the Greater Kruger National Park. While preventable, rabies results in near 100% fatality in humans and is a serious public health concern. Rabies can also transfer from domestic animals to wildlife and can have severe impacts on populations of Endangered species like African Wild Dogs, where it can easily wipe out an entire pack. Our first line of defence is to vaccinate domestic dogs to eliminate the disease in these reservoir hosts. However, due to the rapid reproduction of domestic dogs, this is not always feasible. Therefore, we routinely vaccinate African Wild Dogs during relocation and reintroduction operations. We may also vaccinate packs that are at higher risk of encountering domestic dogs. We have worked with partners to deploy targeted vaccination of individual Wild Dogs in the Greater Kruger National Park and as part of the Wild Dog range expansion project. 71 Wild Dogs (41 males & 30 females) from 22 packs received the initial vaccine, and 62 animals from 21 packs received secondary vaccinations. If you find a pinky and are going to remove it please please be so careful and gentle, their little legs break easily, scoop it from under its bottom instead. Very cool to meet Hope the Wombat and some other young joeys at the Australian Reptile Park, near Gosford today. The Park had to shut down at the start of the #COVID19 pandemic but thanks to more than $170,000 from our zoos support package and —#JobKeeper they were able to ensure the animals were well cared for and keep all 41 of their staff employed. Great to see they’re now pretty much back to business as normal and the Park will come off both the zoo and JobKeeper supports in the next few weeks. While I was there, I also had the chance to lend a hand to prep some food for the cassowaries. It’s been exactly a decade since I began studying bears in North America, after spending 5 years focused on lions in East Africa. A decade! This work has taken me from landscapes full of people who look like me to the most rural and wildest parts of North America where I have been the first Black person some people have ever spoken to. I love this work and love bear country and it’s looking like my science will continue to focus on bear ecology and conservation for the foreseeable future. I also have tremendous gratitude for the people who have supported me through this - who have protected me from hostile individuals in the field and motivated me on long-distance FaceTime calls.
