The first ever NBMA team ran the 2019 Boston Marathon in the women’s master division. They were introduced at the meet up and received a few goodies, including an autographed Meb medallion. We are heartbroken to recently lose one of our Garden Angels, Mr. Melvin Green.💔 Melvin was an avid gardener and made a huge impact on our School Garden program. He was responsible for helping us plant more than 750 Gardens! 🌱 He loved teaching children how to grow all kinds of veggies, and empowered them to do it themselves. He was larger than life, and such an important role model to have involved in our schools and communities.💚 Born and raised in Coconut Grove, Melvin is survived by 6 siblings, 2 sons, 3 grandchildren plus a host of other nieces, nephews and cousins. His presence will be sorely missed by our entire Slow Food family. In his honor, Slow Food Miami will fund a community garden in his name to be planted in the West Grove. Last month, Paddle WA had the opportunity to deliver a series of paddling lessons to 50 high school students in Kununurra as part of the Move it Aus program Paddle Oz! Move It Aus’ is an initiative from @sportaus to encourage inactive Australians to become more active, more often. @paddle_australia created the Paddle Oz program to teach high school-aged children from rural and remote areas the basics of paddling, all of which is completely funded by Sport Australia! Paddle WA Executive Officer Rosalie Evans and Education Officer Leonie Cockman spent a week teaching these kids how to paddle on the stunning Lake Argyle. They also ran a PAQS Flatwater Guide and Instructor qualification course for 8 teachers, meaning that the students can continue learning to paddle! A big thank you goes to Claire Piesse and Glenn Taylor from Kununurra, Roz Manester and Mark Thurgood from Paddle Australia, and to Sports Australia for funding this unique and incredible program! Zondag streden onze dames op het Fialar toernooi in Wageningen. De dames van The Big Stones werden aangevuld met wat oude bekenden van Zwolle en een paar dames uit Wageningen zelf. Na de verrassende start in hun eerste 2 oefenwedstrijden werd opnieuw duidelijk dit toch wel een erg leuk maar vooral heel goed team is. Op het toernooi speelden ze 3 kwalificatiewedstrijden. De eerste wedstrijd tegen de dames van The Big Bulls werd met 12-0 gewonnen. Daarna speelden ze met 5-5 gelijk tegen Wageningen. De derde wedstrijd tegen PickWick Players wonnen ze ook, met 15-0, waarna zij de finale mochten spelen tegen Wageningen. De strijd ging ook in de finale gelijk op en eindigde weer in een gelijkspel, 15-15. Tenminste, zo leek het. Helaas bleek de ref maar 2 trys voor The Big Stones opgeschreven te hebben i.p.v. 3. Daardoor werd het jammer genoeg een administratieve nederlaag. Toch mogen de dames bijzonder trots zijn op hun prestatie! Hey friends, I hope you’re well. Here’s a little update for anyone curious. ❤️ - Kat & I farewelled Victoria after the first lockdown. We chugged our little van into New South Wales and we’ve been living here since June. We spent between June and September at a bushfire relief camp in Milton, NSW. The organisation is called BlazeAid, a volunteer organisation/charity who help communities rebuild after natural disasters. This particular camp’s mission is to build fences for farmers who had their fences destroyed in the summer bushfires. The BlazeAid chapter is a very long one, but the short version is that Kat & I became the coordinators of the camp. The camp was about to be closed when we took over, which would have left nearly 200 farmers in the lurch. Kat and I decided not to sail on the sinking ship, and we managed to heave it into order over the course of four brutal weeks. We worked very long days throughout that time, with no breaks for the weekend. We worked consecutive 12-14 hour days for a month until we eventually figured out what was going on. By mid-July, the show was back on the road and fences were still going up! The continuation of that camp is one of my proudest achievements, and certainly Kat & I’s biggest accomplishment together. . As the cogs began to turn, we got to enjoy the perks of the job a little more. We had unforgettable conversations with farmers, who shared their life changing stories with us. We entrenched ourselves deeply into this warm, resilient and welcoming community. We watched stock return to their paddocks for the first time in eight months after the land had been ravaged by fires and then floods. We shared this journey with 26 hardworking young people from nine different nationalities, as well as five Aussies! We faced every challenge as one. They became our family and lifelong friends. I hope they will be endlessly proud of their impact on the Milton community. At the beginning of September, we parted ways with BlazeAid. It was time to renovate our van, earn some dollars and start travelling. Things are slower now and I’m slowly gravitating back towards music. Ter Leede Vrouwen 1: De volgende ronde in de KNVB beker is bereikt! Afgelopen zaterdag werd ook de tweede beker wedstrijd gewonnen door Ter Leede. Na een mooie strijd tegen Sparta was het dit weekend een uitduel tegen CSW. Een lastige tegenstander die het achterin goed dicht wist te houden. Het team van Coach Vincent begon goed aan de wedstrijd en wist op een 0-2 voorsprong te komen. Toch was CSW nog niet uitgespeeld en schoot een mooi afstandsschot binnen. Ter Leede liep uit tot een 1-3 overwinning, speelde een prima wedstrijd en gaat verder in de Beker. Gefeliciteerd Dames ! I love sport. I play it, I watch it and always have. Always will. ⚽️⚾️🏀🥊🥋🤸🏻♂️🤼♂️🏂🧘🏼♀️🚣🏼♀️🏏 I’m also the parent of an eight-year-old girl who currently loves skateboarding and @aflwomens . But when I look around the City, I can’t help but wonder – where are all the teenage girls? 🤷♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏼♀️🤷🏽♀️🤷🏾♀️🤷🏿♀️🤷🏿♀️🤷🏾♀️🤷🏽♀️🤷🏼♀️ They all seem to ‘disappear’ from public view as they hit their teenage years. Is this really a thing? Why? Do we have a “gender play gap” in the @CityofSydney? 🔎🔎🚺🚺🚺 If so, in what ways can we design, plan and program public spaces to fill it? This was the the substance of a Notice of Motion that was passed (sadly, not unanimously)last night at council. Hopefully a good first step! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🖤❤️🧡💛💚 This NoM puts into practice the ideas that people like @janemjose from the @sydneywomensfund @lucyturnbullao & Sarah Hill (the @greatersydneycommission / @transportfornsw Womens Safety Charter), the Committee for Sydney who recently hosted Designing a CIty for Women (Elise Wood), the @propertycouncil, @sammostyn (@sydneyswans), the @aflwomens @amnakhassan (@gwsgiants )and countless incredible architects, urban planners (@sydurbanistas) @ails_national landscape architects, social workers and activists have been talking about for quite some time now (I.e. lots of ppl doing lots of work for a long time - I just reckon there’s a way to formalise it at council) The investigation will highlight ways the @cityofsydney can ensure that public spaces, and sport and recreation facilities, specifically, are planned for, designed and implemented with women, and those who identify as gender non-binary, as a key consideration. As the City moves forward with the planning for and development of Sydney 2050, the way we design our cities and provide space for playing should provide girls, female teenagers, young women and those who identify as non-binary, with as many opportunities to be seen, heard and to actively participate in city life as their male counterparts.
