• The other Few • This poster, the most famous one of the war with the legendary quotation of Winston Churchill (Never was so much owed by so many to so few), was a tribute to RAF fighter pilots of the Battle of Britain -called the Few by Prime Minister- but the airmen featured actually belonged to Bomber Command, which on those days hit the German capital and relevant targets every night to keep the Nazis head down contributing to the winning of the battle and diverting the threat of invasion of the British Isles, a crucial role in which 719 bomber aircrew were killed. Today marks the 80th anniversary of the ‘Battle of Britain Day, a turning point in the war. Berlin authorized a main attack on Britain on a final attempt to destroy RAF Fighter Command in two major raids. The ensuining large scale air-battle, with the largest and most concentrated bombing against London to date, resulted in high losses to the German bombers. The day was a significant victory for the British, the Germans lost 57 aircraft while another 23 returned damaged. The pilots were, from left to right, Sgt Dinty Moore, Sgt Peter Elliot, Sgt Rawles, Sgt Harold Stone (DFM) and Sgt James Craig, all members of a Bomber Command squadron who posed for the propaganda image. By picturing these sergeant-pilots, as opposed to commissioned officers, the message of the poster was clear; the victory of 1940 was one won through the efforts and sacrifices of the Royal Air Force as a whole. ---------------------------------------------------- [Photo: © IWM Art.IWM PST 8774.]. . . . . #BattleOfBritain #ww2 #worldwar2 #bombing #berlinluftterror #zweitenweltkrieg #RAF #instaplane #warhistory #RAFmuseum #history #WWII #rafbombercommand #DidYouKnow #propaganda #WW2 #spitfire #thirdreich #secondworldwar #churchill #thefew #BattleOfBritain80 #Luftwaffe #bomb #1940 #RAFduxford #theblitz #london #posterdesign #graphicdesign - @berlin_luftterror on Instagram
