Thruxton Historic on 15-16 August hailed the long-awaited return of Motor Racing Legends competition to the track after the curtailment of many early season events due to the COVID-19 crisis. All of the Motor Racing Legends Grids were in action over the weekend, in five races, sharing the programme with the GT & Sports Car Cup and the HRDC. The team at Thruxton very incredibly welcoming and car clubs and spectators were able to enjoy a socially distanced days out watching some high quality historic motor racing. Pre 63 GT, sponsored by DK Engineering was first on the bill on Saturday and it was an uplifting sight as a plethora of early Jaguar E-types and early 1960s GT cars headed out to qualify after the long hiatus. Motorbase Performance BTCC racer Rory Butcher was guesting in Jon Minshaws E-type and just qualified the James Cottingham/ Harvey Stanley in the Huffaker Jaguar E-type (making its European debut following restoration) buy 0.4 seconds. The pole pairing went onto win; Oliver Bryant (Jaguar E-type FHC) and Gregor Fisken/Patrick Blakeney-Edwards (Jaguar E-type roadster) completed the podium after a distributor failure halted the Cottingham/Stanley car which had lead up until the pitstops. The Muirhead/Welch underdog 100/6 came out top of the trio of Austin Healeys with a 4th overall placing. The Tojeiro MG ‘Leonard Special’ John Tojeiro was originally born in Portugal before relocating to the England before the War. Ideally timed to make the most of what would become a hotbed for race car building. As a well established chassis engineer, he started to take on commissions to build one-off racers. 🆕 : 1963 Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider Veloce. Just arrived for sale at The Hub, another wonderful example of these fabulous little cars. Weve sold a number like this in recent years but this is probably the best, having been the subject of a bare-metal, nut and bolt restoration in 2015. The engine was also uprated to Veloce specification and with ownership history known back to new, this really is a perfect Italian open sports car. A rare opportunity has come up to own an original 1961 Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato thats heading to auction. Like the new Continuation version, only 19 examples of the coachbuilt DB4 GT Zagato rolled off the production line. Just to make it even more desirable, this particular car also happens to be the only example finished in Peony dark red. Based on the DB4 GT, the Zagato version cranked up Aston Martins 3.7-liter aluminum inline-six engine to 314 horsepower, up from 240 hp in the regular DB4 and 302 hp in the standard DB4 GT. This enabled the DB4 GT Zagato to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 6.1 seconds. The cars first owner acquired the DB4 GT Zagato in the 1960s and held onto it for over two decades. During that time, they clocked just 15,000 miles. Since 1979, the DB4 GT Zagato has had four new owners, including Aston Martin director Victor Gauntlett. The current owner acquired the car back in 1985 and added more than 30,000 miles to the odometer. While the mileage could be lower, its reassuring to know this rare beauty has been driven and enjoyed rather than being stored away for decades gathering dust. The bodywork looks pristine, which is remarkable considering the car has never had a complete restoration. That makes it one of few DB4 GT Zagatos in the world thats practically still in original condition. The Prototype of a glorious era of Porsche sports cars. The Porsche 924 Baustufe 1 set the foundation for twenty years of Transaxle Porsche’s. With a water cooled engine in the front instead of a air cooled boxer in the back, the Porsche 924 broke with Porsche’s tradition in the late 1970s. On top of that the 924 featured many parts from Audi and Volkswagen which made the standing even worse. Many said the 924 was never a real Porsche. Yet, it was produced over almost ten years and got further developed into the Porsche 944 and Porsche 968 as the four cylinder transaxles. 55 years ago the last Aston Martin DB5 rolled off the production line - well, last-ish. From its 1964 screen fame in Goldfinger, the DB5 also made an appearance as Bond’s ‘personal’ car in Pierce Brosnan’s Bond debut, GoldenEye, and came complete with a fax machine - very nineties. And when we say the 1965 models were the last-ish, it’s because Bond films producer EON Productions teamed up with Aston Martin this year to create just 25, very limited edition replicas of the Goldfinger DB5, complete with (sometimes simulated) gadgets - see second photo (courtesy of Aston Martin Lagonda). This is pretty cool! Customer Paul B. was invited to be part of a pop-up car show at the Edsel Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan on Sunday, Sept 13. There were 250 cars that got to drive around the grounds and have their pictures taken. An industry panel of judges picked the sweet 16 from all the cars, and Paul was surprised and pleased his Factory Five Gen 3 Coupe was one of them! Now theyre in the process of picking the top two that will be invited to their big concours show next year. A national level event that would be quite an honor. Voting is by liking the appropriate picture on their Facebook page. The Coupe is up against a 63 split window Vette (tough competition!) in the first round.
