Yesterday Sexual Minorities Uganda(SMUG) held the 4th #WellnessFriday for the team that works at SMUG. We started the morning with a conversation around Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity with team members informing the rest of the team about what they would like to be referred to as. In the afternoon, our Executive Director Dr Frank Mugisha joined us for extra curricular activities where he beat the rest of the team at almost all the card games we played. Later on in the day, our Programs Director Pepe Julian Onziema received a gift from Men Of The Night a Male sex worker organization. They appreciated him for all the support he accords them. We were later joined by Gloria the Programs Director Freedom and Roam Uganda an LBQ organization who brought with her positive vibes. For Monday Memories we go back TrassPassa in Venezuela in 2015! Great memories were made when a team comprising Prof. Donna Hope @donnaphope, Orville Xpressionz @orvillexpressionz and Cindy Claes @cindy_claes were invited to Venezuela by the British Council to share about dancehall with an eager group of young people and their supportive family members. The term is a play on the word Passa Passa and also a Spanish term for beyond borders. TrassPassa was the brainchild of Kimberlyn Tarache @kimmy.tb and supported by a wave of Venezuelan dancers and others interested in Jamaican culture. The series of events took place with the support and sponsorship of the British Council in Venezuela. A series of lectures and classes on Jamaican dancehall and dancehall dance and choreography were hosted over a one-week period (May 25-29). We share a few memories of some of the activities at the Teresa Carreno Cultural Complex in Caracas, and a dance event at Parque Cultural Tiuna el Fuerte. Helden in de zorg Het zorgpersoneel leverde zeer grote inspanningen tijdens de coronacrisis. Zonder twijfel zijn zij de grote helden van deze crisis. In onze gemeente bleven de personeelsleden van WZC Ter Meeren, WZC Keyhof en Ganspoel op post om de bewoners zo goed mogelijk op te vangen samen met de vrijwilligers. Laat ons ook de huisartsen niet vergeten: zij houden dag in dag uit de vinger aan de pols van onze bevolking. De wisselwerking tussen de medici en paramedici en het lokaal bestuur liep bovendien gesmeerd. Ook het personeel van de thuiszorgdiensten én de thuisverplegers zetten hun werk voort om de mensen thuis te voorzien van de nodige verzorging en begeleiding. La formamos entre varies estudiantes de carreras de la UBA, que movilizadxs por la Crisis Climática y Ambiental, decidimos organizarnos, para desde nuestro lugar de estudiantes Universiarixs, empezar a formarnos y militar por un ambientalismo con perspectiva interdisciplinaria que tenga en cuenta la dimensión social de los conflictos ambientales . 🌎 El pasado año fue movido: Intensas reuniones, múltiples formaciones con expertxs en diversas temáticas, movilizaciones por la problemática socioambiental, un compromiso ambiental para la Ciudad con las fuerzas políticas, debatir en la legislatura sobre la incineración de residuos, un viaje hacia Gualeguaychú para interiorizarnos con sus luchas ambientales, y podríamos seguir y seguir. . 👉 Entendemos que el contexto actual es más que preocupante, en múltiples dimensiones. My favorite drummer has died. Tony Allen. I have not processed it at all and dont usually jump to posting on social media after something this heavy happens, but I feel the immediate need to write, in order to process my feelings about him and outwardly express how important a figure he was in music. Tony Allen was a humble giant, whose otherworldly musicality has lifted our little world to a higher place. The universe was in his drumming. His drumming possessed history, it contained spirits, it communicated messages. A musical instrument, when wielded with a certain magical ability and intention, becomes a kind of weapon, a unique vessel through which we understand humanity and see ourselves in ways that words cannot describe. It forms a direct line starting from the player’s heart, moving through their entire physical and emotional body, and jumps out onto someone else. Tony harnessed that power, and he had it all the time, with every single note he played. Tony Allen was the prime example of a drummer’s ability to harness the magic of music. One of the things I admired most about Tony was his quiet yet thunderous presence, on the drums and off. When he played the drums, he was so calm and effortless that he barely looked like he was moving a muscle. Do you know how rare that is, for a drummer? As a bandleader (Fela’s and otherwise) he let the band play their hearts out while also having them wrapped around his finger, ready to smack the snare drum at any moment to cue a dynamic shift, reigning everyone in. Tony taught us that drummers have all the power, if they choose to accept it - but that doesn’t mean they need to be tyrants.
