Todays Downtown Bryan History dates back to 25 years ago when Caffé Capri first opened their doors. Caffe Capri was opened on September 18, 1995 by Rami Cerone, Texas A&M class of 95, relying solely on money from credit card cash advances. It was a bold move, especially since downtown was not yet established. 25 years later however, this restaurant continues to grow and has won numerous awards such as Best Italian and the Aggie 100 fastest growing businesses in the world. The menu is a combination of recipes: some consist of items that come directly from the Cerone family kitchen. Many are the result of Rami constantly experimenting with different ingredients - what you see are the recipes that actually worked. The marinara sauce is a secret recipe from his fathers family. So secret in fact, that until November of 1995, his father would come twice a week just to make 30 gallons of sauce (but not before chasing everyone out of the kitchen). Thankfully however, business picked up and twice a week was no longer enough so Rami finally learned the recipe. The open kitchen is there so you can see the food being prepared - we have nothing to hide. This building was originally a grocery store. However, only the tin ceiling remains original - the rest has been restored. The tables and columns are made of a stone called rose travertine that was taken from the interior of an old Downtown Bryan building. Upstairs, we offer a private banquet room that can seat up to 60 people. The music, although different for an Italian restaurant, adds to the upbeat atmosphere and the unique decor. This is Simon. If you’ve been on Shady gram over the past year, you would have seen some of Simon’s photography and videography wizardry. From milkshake moustache portraits to pork belly bao stop motion fun and beer hug shotgun videos - that’s Simon. “The story of how I ended up at shady goes back to when my hair was so long I couldn’t see where I was going nor wanted to see where I was going, and as faith would have it one early summer evening as I was wandering around the neighbourhood aimlessly, I unknowingly stepped into the shady establishment. I liked the ambience, loved the people and so adopted myself as part of the family and just never left. Another story paints me as a misfit kid who grew up wonderfully unsupervised. As unsupervised misfits recognise unsupervised misfits, shady found and adopted me, and then just let me further live my unsupervised life, with only occasional responsibilities to keep me shady.” This really was how it happened. We find our village people in the drunken dark and adopt each other. Simon offered his time and creativity out of the blue, which we snatched up with our greedy paws. And then we liked the combination of our wits and humour and silly snark together so much we made it a real thing. Better than any tinder date. Shady gram hasn’t been the same since. “I was born in Germany, then moved to South Africa a few years later. Because I was trilingual people placed a lot more faith and trust in me than they should have, and that is how I got my first job as a waiter/barista at the only coffee shop in town (it was a small town) on weekends/school holidays when I was around 11 or 12 years old - yes it was illegal, but it was also South Africa, the word illegal doesn’t carry much weight around that part of the world.” The shade is in the blood from young, and it’s strong. My DIY anamorphic lens is built using a focus group, anamorphic group, and spherical group. The entire lens is designed to be interchanged on the fly. FAKES: Just in the last month, my work has been featured in two, large online publications/platforms without any “Artist Credit” to the work. You may think, yeah that’s cool, what’s she moaning about. Then on Friday, thanks to my mate Ben Rider @zombiesqueegee drew my attention to a massive on-line selling platform @redbubble who’s sellers “Protesttees” & (Jane Keeper- only my work) has plagiarised our work (& many other artists we know) from what appears to be the artwork that was featured in the book, ‘Stick It To The Man’ sticker bomb book. . Following this thread, I then went to find 3 other on-line selling platforms with various sellers who are also using my work, with each having a range of 45-70+ products with my work on them🤯. One site included is the @teepublic ; user Surfskate & Festivallr. It’s a fucking mine field tbh & it’s left me paralysed in the last few days. I’ve been devastated about how these works that I created with honest intend have been taken completely out of context (many which are not even put up for sale by me) used & placed on products like masks, mugs & cushions. It’s a complete farce without their original intent. ————————————————————— I don’t want your sympathy (as I’m dealing with this situation & it’s not my first time in this rodeo) or want your rage! What I want is better PROTECTION for us! I want people, photographers, galleries, journalists, bloggers & social media enthusiasts to understand that, every time you publish an artwork which has no credit attached to it, the image is lost into the ether, especially on platforms like Instagram or The Evening Standard, which published my work without an artist credit! They are making it very very hard for us to prove that the work we’ve done is OUR’S, especially when it comes for us fighting our case against plagiarist scums like these- so yes, just incase you didn’t know, I have to spend days, going through my archives, images/ books/ articles to “Prove” that the work the plagiarists have stolen are mine & it’s not the other way around. Being a person with heightened anxiety means that I need to have affirmations ready to take up space in my fertile and not always helpful imagination when things go south. When I am in these states of out of control nervous system response, I often try and make tools like this and I test them out on myself. I can say with certainty that working with these affirmations moved me from a state of deep sadness and fear into one of grounded joy and hope. Pick a card... While I love the idea of mass printing a deck in some regard, I generally prefer to make things by hand. There is a certain magic to the lines and the intention put into them.
