Let’s just all pretend like my c and k terminal dots are at the same height and my g stem is perfectly on slant. Day two of Flourishing class with @suzcunningham was so much fun. This is a very tiny sampling compared to the extent of flourishes that were covered! Things got FAN-CEEEE. I tend to be quite simple in my style so it’s really fun to be reminded to bust out the flair sometimes. Other random thoughts on this fine Saturday: 1) I’m a barely-there-shade lover. • Shape tracing • A salt tray is not only simple to set up but it’s been one my boys have enjoyed recently, whether it’s free drawing or tracing patterns, letters or shapes. It provides a great tool for sensory exploration and fine motor development. Tracing and drawing lines, strokes, patterns and shapes help children to master the curves and diagonals necessary for letter formation. These pre-writing skills are the fundamental skills needed before learning how to write letters and numbers. When I first introduced salt tray tracing to Mr 2.5, he practised left to right progression with patterns and lines. This time I gave him our DIY tactile shapes (made with paint chips and pipe cleaners). I noticed he started the shapes with dots for the corners so I pointed out the corners and sides as he traced. This is just one of the ways that incidental learning occurs through daily play and conversation! Each time he finished a shape, he would give the tray a quick shake to resettle the salt and start over again!
