The world’s most famous hats have their origins in Britain.⠀ ⠀ @lockhatters at 6 St. James’s Street is the oldest retail premises in #London and since 1759 the hatters there have welcomed an extraordinary list of clients through the doors, from Lord Nelson and Charlie Chaplin to Jackie Onassis and Nigella Lawson. ⠀ ⠀ Iconic hat designs such as the original ‘Coke’ or bowler came from Lock’s, as did Nelson’s bicorns, Oscar Wilde’s famous fedora, and Winston Churchill’s trademark homburg.⠀ ⠀ Author and historian David Long reveals for the first time the lives of the fascinating men and women who made their headgear famous in his new book The Hats that Made Britain. - @thehistorypressuk on Instagram

im tired of advocating for my humanity. it’s even crazy that the words “black lives matter” are real when that should’ve been the default. i wrote an extremely long post and deleted it because there’s nothing i can say that hasn’t been said today, yesterday, in 2014, in 2012, in 1992, in 1964, in 1776, about how this world’s neverending violence against black people has to end. ask yourself how you’re allying yourself with us and if you’re doing enough, because yes your activism as a non-black person can be and will be quantified. there’s a link in my bio tht has a bunch of resources. donate, read, and continue to uplift black voices. and don’t let it stop once the protests are over, because that’s what when we need it the most. and for the love of God, please stop providing your unwarranted opinion on how black people should express their rage. - @teenatona on Instagram

So why did North Carolina not ratify the 19th Amendment in 1920? 🤔❓🤔 Though many leaders in North Carolina supported womens suffrage (Governor Thomas Bickett didnt personally support it, but saw it as inevitable and wanted NC to join the cause gracefully), there was also a strong anti-suffrage sentiment in the state. Many of the states leaders thought that granting women the right to vote would mean trouble for the states powerful textile industries. They thought that women would be more interested in labor rights, as well as the rights of children. • • State leaders also believed that granting women the right to vote would inevitably enfranchise African Americans. Jim Crow laws passed at the turn of the twentieth century were specifically designed to bar African Americans from voting and holding public office. This anti-suffrage document is blatantly white supremacist and expresses Lost Cause ideaology (notably evoking Reconstruction horrors, a common talking point of Lost Cause sentiment). The document tells men of the south to BEWARE, because womens suffrage will lead to the enfranchisement of African Americans. Of course, that was not directly the case. The 19th Amendment only guaranteed white women the right to vote. Black men and women fought into the 1960s to eliminate voting restrictions. • • Image is an Anti-Woman Suffrage circular, courtesy of the State Archives of North Carolina • • #shechangedtheworld #SCTW #yearofthewoman #YOW - @ncstatecapitol on Instagram

The Sackler family halted all state/county/municipality lawsuits against them by filing for bankruptcy in the Southern District of New York. A court and a judge that they handpicked because of his lenient history on corporations. This is not a regular corporate bankruptcy. 400,000 lives have been lost. Purdue’s marketing tactics and schemes paved the way for the modern overdose crisis as we know it - Oxy ➡️ Heroin ➡️ Fentanyl. Purdue Pharma made $36 billion off of OxyContin. Bankrupt how? They hold personal wealth of over $13 billion. Bankrupt how? P.A.I.N. is committed to ensuring accountability from The Sacklers. We’ve gotten their name off of museums and universities.. Well, not all (Hey @metmuseum @guggenheim @diaartfoundation ). We will ensure that there is some shred of justice in this goddamn unjust system. We already got a deadline extension in their personal injury filing process. Please go to Oxyjustice.org to learn more. LINK IN BIO #ShameOnSackler - @sacklerpain on Instagram

This bottle cap quote weirdly rings true. Thinking about this particularly in regard to the issue of policing. Police forces originated to quell Black and indigenous people. The institution of the police force has always existed for the sake of a very specific kind of law and order. Sure, we need to be able to feel safe- but what are we really afraid of, and how does the existing system reflect its roots? Were you raised respecting, fearing, or not noticing police presence? If you identify with the first or last camp, are you listening to the voices of those who represent the second? Enjoy your sparklers yall Thanks @honestea.drinks #police_usa #policeofficer #policebrutalityawareness #listen @newyorkpolice #stopracism - @ledahfinck on Instagram
