As the practice of keeping cetaceans in captivity continues to be put under fire in the West (and rightly so), it’s becoming ever more popular and prominent in the East, with wild killer whales at the forefront of a long line of victims. While a range of oceanic dolphins are targeted by the captivity trade, orcas are among the most prized, with a single untrained orca fetching between one and five million dollars. Unfortunately, captive breeding programmes (although unethical themselves) are unable to keep up with the demand for captive orcas, so up-and-coming marine parks turn to wild-capture operations instead. Between 2012 and 2018 more than 30 orca calves were taken from the wild for the captivity trade. While 10 lucky individuals were released, the majority ended up in concrete tanks to be exploited for the rest of their lives. In the case of Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park’s four orcas, they’ve already been trained and put on display, and are already suffering the consequences of confinement. This vicious cycle of brutality and exploitation can be broken. By reducing profits or even causing losses, the demand is cut, aquariums are shut down and wild-captures are prevented. This may look like something out of a sci-fi film, but its actually a jellyfish! This 🌈 is known as a ctenophore or a comb jelly. Its cilia, those hairlike structures that look like tiny combs, actually allow it to swim! But don’t be fooled by the ctenophore’s ethereal appearance: Its a voracious predator. On a good day, it can consume 10 times its body weight in larvae and small crustaceans. This magnificent creature is just one of thousands of species in the oceans twilight zone — the barely explored region 650 and 3,000 feet below the surface. The twilight zone’s inhabitants also seem to serve a critical function for the planet, carrying the carbon in their food into those deep waters, where some of the carbon can stay behind and remain isolated from the atmosphere for hundreds or even thousands of years, says ocean scientist Heidi Sosik of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (@whoi.ocean) — a member of TED’s Audacious Project. Pertemuan dengan sunfish alias mola-mola dianggap sebagai suatu ‘pencapaian’ bagi para penggemar selam. Di Indonesia, tempat paling popular untuk melakukan pertemuan itu adalah Crystal Bay di Nusa Penida, Bali . Setiap musim dingin Australia tiba, Crystal Bay menjadi tujuan utama para penyelam yang ke Nusa Penida. Kadang sampai kelewatan. Bisa ada puluhan kapal di atas dan ratusan penyelam di bawah. Sudah nggak asik dan (sebenarnya) bahaya. Apalagi di sini, arus kencang di laut lepas kadang datang tak terduga. Bukan tempat yang cocok bagi penyelam pemula. Apa daya, banyak penyelam yang nekat mengejar keberuntungan bertemu mola-mola segera . Gue sendiri dalam urusan bertemu mola-mola, bisa dikategorikan sebagai penyelam yang sabar bukan yang beruntung . Gue baru berani ke Crystal Bay setelah sudah lebih dari 100 penyelaman. 5 kali trip menyelam di Crystal Bay, belum juga ketemu . Akhirnya, di trip ke 6 dan di penyelaman ke 19 kali, ketemu juga dengan mola-mola yang hits ini. Seperti foto yang gue ambil. Tatap muka dia menghampiri. Mungkin karena dia menaruh belas kasihan😀 . Pertemuan ini pun bisa tergolong nggak sengaja. Trip ke 6 bareng geng Kapal Selam Diving Club, ada 8 kapal untuk seluruh rombongan. Di salah satu kapal, ada diver senior ngambek sama guidenya, alhasil gue ‘dikorbankan’ untuk bertukar tempat supaya mereka tidak baku hantam. Dilalah, di kapal ini gue bertemu mola-mola. #Tigersharks along with the #GreatWhiteSharks are the subject of so many of the @NatGeo and Discovery @SharkWeek2020. They are beautiful, big, and a bit mysterious, and lets be honest, also fairly easy to film if you can get them to take an interest in the spot you are filming (food). It helps that they like to be in beautiful, mostly tropical locations. Its is interesting to see how this animal has become a new icon in recent years, nearly catching up to the Great White in the number of shows, it seems. And thanks to the Bahamas, there are probably more images of people diving and freediving with tigers now than ever before. I am glad their reputation is getting a complete makeover. - The Greenland shark is the longest living vertebrate known to man. It is believed this one is over 400 years old!
We love Gimpy! When we first saw this Bull Shark a few years ago, she had plastic wrapped around her body. We were able to get it almost completely removed before she left and we didn’t see her again that trip. When we saw her on a following trip, she had no plastic on her but she was deeply scarred and her left pectoral fin was permanently damaged, facing inward. She was very shy for a while, and very small. This year she has grown to outsize all our other sharks, and she is the BEST Bull Shark we have ever been around. She slowly cruises around the surface, almost like our local lemon sharks modeling for photos and completely trusting of us. It is amazing. I visited mexico on holiday originally in 2018 for the first time and we loved it very much that we had to go back in 2019 for another trip. A few weeks back I found a dead humpback whale offshore being eaten by a 15/16 ft great white (previous post). As more blood and oil filled the water my boat was surely masked in the same smell. My boat was now a floating smelly object... just like the whale. The shark apparently thought so as well and tried to bite off the boat prop. Raging winds sent me back to the harbor and the whale onto a nearby beach (that also happens to be a white shark nursery) off of Santa Cruz. At the same time, flocks of tourists were flooding the beaches at night to see the bioluminescent waves. I was hoping to get some images of the whale with the blue waves when I showed up to hundreds of tourists taking photos of the whale. What started off innocent turned ugly when drunks said They would buy the next round anyone getting pictures of the man climbing on the whale for instagram. The derelict climbed aboard with dog in tow. The next wave sent him into the gnarly smelling water. I too got closer to get some photos and found my pants covered in the horrid smell. Humans are crazy and I often have trouble understanding what drives people to act this way. So on my drive home at 230 am I took off my pants to save the seats. I pulled over around moss landing to answer a quick email to a scientist when the police showed up behind me. No pants, little explanation and a whole lot of confusion. I keep staring at this photo, from the last shark dive I went on before leaving Florida, trying to come up with some witty ocean-themed caption for all of you who follow me for the ocean photos. - And... I just can’t do it. - What I realize is - by doing this, what I’m really trying to do is squeeze myself back into a box that I outgrew a while ago… in order to make other people happy. - Lol. Oh, the many ways we do this while sacrificing ourselves and our authenticity in the process. - It’s not that I don’t love the ocean or all the animals that call it home. It’s not that I’ll never dive again, never photograph a whale again. Of course I will! The ocean has changed my life, taught me so many lessons, and I know she’ll continue teaching me until my time here is complete. - But. It’s not what defines me. It’s not who I am. And I’m done squeezing into boxes I don’t belong in. - We spend a lot time and energy tying ourselves to the many different identities we gather (or are given) throughout our life, never realizing that we aren’t any of them to begin with. - That means, when that identity gets stripped away (which is almost guaranteed because nothing is permanent and we are never promised anything in this life except change) we’re left confused, feeling like someone pulled the rug out from under our feet, probably staring in the mirror asking ourselves, “uhh, who am I now?!” - We’re so much more. So, so, SO much more than these identities, these boxes - And when we begin the work of taking them off, of stepping out, we can see that truth with more clarity. Our worlds are not as rocked anymore, when that rug comes flying out. We’re not as reluctant to follow our heart, when it guides us in a totally new direction. - We’re free to just be ✨ - And that’s not to say we won’t ever unconsciously try to squeeze back in (to a perceived comfort zone) but we’ll immediately know when we are. Because... it feels like crap. - What boxes are you still trying to fit in that you’ve outgrown? What identities have you taken on that are no longer serving who you are TODAY? A basking shark cruises at the surface on a feeding run. 🦈 Which view did you like most? From above or below the surface? 📹 @bertiegregory: This shark was on a mission – filtering up to two million litres of water per hour to take advantage of a summer plankton bloom. Drones have revolutionised both wildlife film and science. Studying basking sharks from the surface is difficult- you don’t see much other than a dorsal fin and a bit of mouth and tail on a flat day. When underwater, you see more of the action but given the poor water visibility, your view doesn’t last long as the shark swims by. From the air however, it’s a different story. Even a simple top down shot like this allows us to analyse the mechanics of their feeding and helps us get a sense of how they move around the plankton blooms. This new technology is also giving us as an insight into the mysterious social lives of basking sharks. Arati Gupta (Saha) wouldve been 80 this week. Kolkata-born, Saha started swimming at age four. By five, she was already winning gold at competitions, and by 12, she was representing #India at the #Olympics. In 1960, she was awarded the fourth highest civilian honor in India, the Padma Shri, making her the first Indian sportswoman recipient. Before her swim across the English Channel, Saha practiced tirelessly. First, she swam continuously for eight hours in a pond, then 16. She made two attempts to swim from Cape Gris Nez, France, to Sandgate, England. A mind-blowing 42 miles later, she hoisted the Indian flag at the coast of Sandgate. The news was announced on All India Radio and she was personally congratulated by the likes of then India Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Taiwan bans fishing the giant Megamouth shark, Great White and Basking sharks. Since the Megamouth shark was discovered and named in 1976, only 226 have been recorded around the world as of June 17 this year — 146 of which were caught in Taiwan. The fishing ban also includes the Great White shark and Basking shark. Taiwan Fisheries made the announcement July 15, in an effort to preserve biodiversity in the waters of Taiwan. The ban is set to apply to all Taiwanese fishing boats, no matter where they fish, and will take effect in less than 60 days if no objections are raised. The country’s Fisheries Agency has stated that although fishing vessels are banned from catching the three species, catching them for teaching or scientific research purposes will be allowed after obtaining Cabinet-level approval from the Council of Agriculture. This follows the Taiwanese ban on fishing Whale sharks in 2018 and shark finning in 2012.
