Happy #WorldWildlifeDay 🐳 A few weeks ago, the stars aligned for an opportunity to join @sealegacy on expedition to observe the largest gathering of North Atlantic humpback whales on their breeding and calving grounds, the Silver Bank, part of the Sanctuary for the Marine Mammals of the Dominican Republic. Depths average 60 to 100 feet, which is why the whales come. The surrounding waters are deep, but the warm, shallow waters here provide protection. After their long journey from food-rich northern waters, the whales do not feed for the duration of their tropical visit. Instead they devote all of their energy to birthing and nurturing a new generation of young. Or, courting and mating to create the next. We were lucky to have @tomconlinadventures join us, a pioneer in facilitating passive in-water whale encounters (PIWWEs), formulating and establishing internationally recognized guidelines for the safe and respectful practice of in-water cetacean encounters for over 30 years. With some good luck cookies in our bellies, we set out on small tenders to look for cooperative, tolerant and/or curious whales, approaching calmly and peacefully, permitting a memorable encounter between species. I remember the overwhelming sense of love and joy I felt looking down from the surface at a peaceful mother and calf pair. The mother would rest 20 feet below the surface with her baby, not yet having perfected its buoyancy skills, tucked safely under her chin. Every 3-4 minutes when the curious calf needed to breathe, it would peak its little head out from under its mom and ever so slowly rise up, taking a few breaths just a few feet from us before returning down to the comfort of its mother to nap. We later came upon what we thought was a sleeping whale and watched his breathing cycle to time getting in the water, so he wouldn’t be surprised by us. We slowly entered the water as he slowly descended after a few breathes. I put my face in the water and about 30 feet below us there he was - a giant male belting out a hauntingly beautiful song. Running this morning tears (lol no joke) started rolling down my face as I listened to a speech by Nelson Mandela. Saying there is no passion to be found playing small and settling for a life less then the life you are capable of. That you need to take risks. Fail BIG! Feel immense pain. Loss. As nothing worthwhile comes from easy.’ I stopped running in the direction I was going. Ran back to my car and then paddleboarded outside of the reef. I decided that today I would swim with whales or at least give it a shot. What unfolded is nothing short of truly magnificent. I was so far out in the middle of the ocean. Out of no where; I turn to watch a pod of spiner dolphins. With one jumping out in the air. Then turn my head and a mama whale and her calf are right in front of me. We love Gimpy! When we first saw this Bull Shark a few years ago, she had plastic wrapped around her body. We were able to get it almost completely removed before she left and we didn’t see her again that trip. When we saw her on a following trip, she had no plastic on her but she was deeply scarred and her left pectoral fin was permanently damaged, facing inward. She was very shy for a while, and very small. This year she has grown to outsize all our other sharks, and she is the BEST Bull Shark we have ever been around. She slowly cruises around the surface, almost like our local lemon sharks modeling for photos and completely trusting of us. It is amazing. I keep staring at this photo, from the last shark dive I went on before leaving Florida, trying to come up with some witty ocean-themed caption for all of you who follow me for the ocean photos. - And... I just can’t do it. - What I realize is - by doing this, what I’m really trying to do is squeeze myself back into a box that I outgrew a while ago… in order to make other people happy. - Lol. Oh, the many ways we do this while sacrificing ourselves and our authenticity in the process. - It’s not that I don’t love the ocean or all the animals that call it home. It’s not that I’ll never dive again, never photograph a whale again. Of course I will! The ocean has changed my life, taught me so many lessons, and I know she’ll continue teaching me until my time here is complete. - But. It’s not what defines me. It’s not who I am. And I’m done squeezing into boxes I don’t belong in. - We spend a lot time and energy tying ourselves to the many different identities we gather (or are given) throughout our life, never realizing that we aren’t any of them to begin with. - That means, when that identity gets stripped away (which is almost guaranteed because nothing is permanent and we are never promised anything in this life except change) we’re left confused, feeling like someone pulled the rug out from under our feet, probably staring in the mirror asking ourselves, “uhh, who am I now?!” - We’re so much more. So, so, SO much more than these identities, these boxes - And when we begin the work of taking them off, of stepping out, we can see that truth with more clarity. Our worlds are not as rocked anymore, when that rug comes flying out. We’re not as reluctant to follow our heart, when it guides us in a totally new direction. - We’re free to just be ✨ - And that’s not to say we won’t ever unconsciously try to squeeze back in (to a perceived comfort zone) but we’ll immediately know when we are. Because... it feels like crap. - What boxes are you still trying to fit in that you’ve outgrown? What identities have you taken on that are no longer serving who you are TODAY? A few weeks back I found a dead humpback whale offshore being eaten by a 15/16 ft great white (previous post). As more blood and oil filled the water my boat was surely masked in the same smell. My boat was now a floating smelly object... just like the whale. The shark apparently thought so as well and tried to bite off the boat prop. Raging winds sent me back to the harbor and the whale onto a nearby beach (that also happens to be a white shark nursery) off of Santa Cruz. At the same time, flocks of tourists were flooding the beaches at night to see the bioluminescent waves. I was hoping to get some images of the whale with the blue waves when I showed up to hundreds of tourists taking photos of the whale. What started off innocent turned ugly when drunks said They would buy the next round anyone getting pictures of the man climbing on the whale for instagram. The derelict climbed aboard with dog in tow. The next wave sent him into the gnarly smelling water. I too got closer to get some photos and found my pants covered in the horrid smell. Humans are crazy and I often have trouble understanding what drives people to act this way. So on my drive home at 230 am I took off my pants to save the seats. I pulled over around moss landing to answer a quick email to a scientist when the police showed up behind me. No pants, little explanation and a whole lot of confusion.
