I was reflecting on healing this morning. Not just physically but mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I decreased my antidepressants medication last week (with the support and guidance of my doctor) and it brought up more than I expected. Can I do this? Am I ready? What if? Overall, my mental health is really good right now. My anxiety and depression symptoms are low (particularly in summer) and I continue to prioritize my health and mental wellbeing. But Ive decreased my medication dose before and had to increase it again. A thought that threatens my peace, if I let it. If I dwell. Anyways, I got stuck on the thought of whether we are ever truly ready for major healing (synonymous with feel ready). Ready to forsake the familiar and abandon our narrative of suffering. I am not saying that we choose to be in pain, but healing is not for the faint of heart, it takes courage. It takes sacrifice. Its a long haul. I was supporting a webinar this week on school refusal and anxiety where the speaker talked about the sometimes necessary level of discomfort. For example, when we go to say, the physiotherapist, we will be asked to do stretches and rehabilitation that may be uncomfortable and even somewhat painful at first but is a necessary level of pain for healing to begin. Its adjacent to our comfort zone - until we discover a new, expanding comfort zone. Healing comes from the Old English words hælan, which means to make whole. Pain and discomfort will always be part of our journey, us being a whole person. Some of it we will need to step into and some will be outside of our control. Each day I am reminding myself that I am willing and worthy of healing. That I am, healing. Even even when there is pain. Even when Im discouraged. Even when darker days linger. Even if has turned into a bit of a theme for me this year. As the saying goes, healing is not linear. Hold that close as you navigate your own story. #boakman - @b.oakman on Instagram
