Community pt. 3 ———————— For so long, I was desperate to find someone like me. My deepest longings and desires left me feeling like I could never find someone that understood my perspective and what I was struggling with. I felt isolated in my church body, left alone in the place I loved the most. There is a temptation we all face. The temptation to flee from places of conflict. To run from the shame. To flee from community. This is my temptation too. But, while the church is constantly ridiculed for its failures to help and love those who have been outcasted, I have found a home in the conflict. While I may not have many of those who can recognize with my story of struggling personally, I have found a home in fighting alongside my brothers and sisters who love me through it, regardless if they understand me completely. At the end of the day, thats the beauty of the church. Where we fail to meet each others complete needs, Christ’s mercy and grace fills the gaps. We will never have the all encompassing community that we all desire, but thats exactly why we need Jesus. While we wait, we live in the tension with the brothers and sisters God has given us. So, be encouraged. While you may feel outcasted, press into the tension and find community. It may have been there all along. In 1910, William K. Vanderbilt II purchased this waterfront property in Centerport, NY as a getaway from the city and its social scene. Vanderbilt named his new estate “Eagle’s Nest” and had a small, 7-room English bungalow built overlooking the bay. By the 1930s though, after inheriting $23 million from his father, traveling around the world for his scientific expeditions, and marrying his second wife, Vanderbilt’s life had changed quite a bit, and the little house changed with him. Lukasz, known as Wu to his friends, was remembered as someone with so much to offer and so much success ahead in your life taken away from you. Charity organisation Puddle Jumpers Incorporated remembered Chelsea as a beautiful, kind-hearted volunteer, who once donated her hair to cancer victims. The man accused of shooting the pair is Lukaszs own father Pawel (Paul) Klosowski. Its believed Lukasz had only recently connected with his father. It absolutely blows my mind that the Ku Klux Klan is a legal organization in America. Once destroyed and made illegal by President Ulysses S Grant in 1871, it resurfaced almost exactly 100 years ago, in the 1920’s. I think it’s about 100 years overdue to abolish this stain on American history once and for all. This Memorial Day, I ask Americans to pause for a moment and offer a prayer of thanks for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for you and every freedom-loving American. Unfortunately, many of us never take that important moment to really appreciate the sacrifice that was made. Let me tell you my story. A few years ago, as a member of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, I traveled to visit the American cemeteries in both Europe and North Africa. On that Memorial Day, our committee participated in the Memorial Day ceremony at Netherlands American Cemetery. It was a beautiful day, and the ceremony was moving. A Dutch men’s choir sang ‘God Bless America,’ the Royal Netherlands Air Force did a ‘missing man formation’ flyover, and local residents and their children placed flowers on each grave. Stories were shared of the heroism of American and Allied soldiers who defeated the Germans at the Battle of the Bulge. After the ceremony, my wife and I walked past every grave to pay our respects. The white crosses and Stars of David glistened in the sunlight. At one of the graves, I paused to read the inscription, and it brought me to tears. In simple black letters etched in the marble cross it read, ‘Private Roy C. Irwin, New Jersey, December 28, 1944.’ The day Roy C. Irwin died fighting for America was the same day I was born. All of a sudden, the meaning of Memorial Day became clear. On the day my mother gave me life, Roy C. Irwin sacrificed his life for the freedom I have enjoyed and cherished for 72 years. On this Memorial Day, I say, ‘God bless Roy C. Irwin, and God bless America’s veterans.’ - @senatorisakson on Instagram

The Cobblestone House located at 35-34 Bell Boulevard was built in 1906. The original owner of the house was Elizabeth A. Adams, who paid an estimated $10,000 for the construction of the house. It features both the Colonial Revival and arts and crafts styles and incorporates cobblestones that are irregularly sized and shaped. THE LITTLE BLACK CHURCH AT BUDIR. . . . The church itself is quite striking set amongst the dramatic seaside and mountainous landscape but my favourite part is the story of the women who rebuilt it after the destruction of the original church built in 1703. Steinunn Sveinsdóttir lobbied the church to rebuild but they rejected her persistent requests. Today is Juneteenth – a celebration created in 1865 to commemorate the eradication of American slavery and is today a holiday to highlight the successes and contributions of African Americans across the nation. For this week’s Hometown Adventures that falls on #Juneteenth, we want to highlight some of these successes in our own region. We want to bring you beyond the Blue Line to the U.S. Canada border in #Waddington, where Black history and entrepreneurship converge with Isaac Johnson, a prominent African American stone mason and master builder. Johnson made his way north, started a family, and made a name for himself as a master craftsman and mason between Northern New York and Ontario, all after casting off the shackles of bondage and his enslavers in Kentucky and enlisting and serving in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Today, his lasting contributions remain in places like Waddington, where the 1884 Town Hall and the elegant Presbyterian Church stand as testaments not only to Johnson’s skill, but to Black excellence in the North Country. •Post 3/13 of our @serpentineuk Takeover• Mauritanian filmmaker Med Hondo’s seminal ‘Soleil Ô (Oh, Sun!)’ was released in 1970. The film introduces a protagonist played by Guadeloupean actor Robert Liensol (also a lead character in Hondo’s West Indies’) who relocates to Paris, France convinced that he will settle into the comfortable life promised back home. On arrival, he realises quickly that bureaucratic indifference, unemployment and disenfranchisement, all residues of colonialism’s unceasing architecture, are core to migrant lives in France. Hondo’s experimental approach forms a scattering narrative in its exposure and critique of Western Capitalism moreover its relations to anti-Blackness. Both are equally relevant to our current moment as they were in the early 1960s.
