I used to follow people on Instagram who I wanted to be like, to look like, to feel like. Before instagram was a thing, I did the same thing with live people. I saw them for all their beautiful and unique strengths and analyzed myself for all aspects of mediocrity. I liked the comparison game that inspired self loathing. I knew how to press my own buttons better than anyone else did. I labeled the constant self criticism “motivation,” thinking it would drive me to be better. And in many aspects of my life, it did. I graduated top of my class, I attended an Ivy League university, I was recruited to play a division 1 sport. There’s a high to that kind of reckless commitment to being perceived as successful no matter the cost. There’s a comfort in thinking anything less than perfection isn’t an an option. An armor of accolades to protect a sensitive soul. I think I fell so hard for nutrition because my weight was the one thing in life I couldn’t force into being “right” by sheer will. The harder I pushed & the more intensely I critiqued, the more my body pushed back. I read books, I created rules, I restricted. Each attempt to manipulate my size through food got me farther from a place of authentic health. The passion I initially felt for this field was a passion to correct the habits that felt completely out of control in my own life. The passion I feel for it now is a passion to help others never feel the way I did. So many of us experience struggle in this space. When we say, I want to lose __ pounds, what we are really saying is I want to feel valued, I want to feel confident, I want to feel successful. What if we didn’t have to focus on our weight to feel that way? What if we could focus on habits that promoted real health and let our weight fall where it may? These are the things I wish I were told instead of reading books that convinced me to eliminate grains, dairy, & legumes for the rest of my life (spoiler alert: I couldn’t and you shouldn’t). These are things I will preach to my future children when society makes them inevitably question their physical bodies. Even if you’re lost, don’t make it appear that way. You’ll figure it out. 9. Fuel your body with everything it needs - good food, water, kindness and care. 10. Don’t let your younger years define your future. When you’re 30, you’ll barely remember 16. to be honest, coming home for me over the years has become harder & harder. I’ve changed a lot over the past 8 years living around the world & I am proud of the growth & person I have become. But the anxiety never fails to return coming back to my roots, what shaped me, where I spent the majority of my life growing up & seeing people I love knowing I’ve changed. Your once comfort zone quickly becomes the unknown & the anxiety increases each time I come back. I’m not sure if anyone relates to this returning to your hometown but I do know I’m grateful for friends & family that have supported me along the way & love me through the growth. Freshman, let’s talk. I gained 20 pounds my freshman year. And that’s f*cking fine. I also gained unforgettable memories and the most amazing friends that I could have ever imagined. I’ve been seeing a lot of posts that have rubbed me the wrong way lately tbh. There’s no shame in going out for food every once in a while after a night out with friends. College is FUN. Don’t let the fear of slipping up from your “healthy” lifestyle stop you from enjoying yourself. Some posts that I’ve been seeing are so adamant about staying healthy and on track in college that they don’t even account for happiness. That’s really sad to see. There’s going to be days where you don’t want to go to the gym after class. Don’t force yourself to go. There’s also going to be long nights studying where you finish a bag or 3 of Cheetos (flaming hot for me). Don’t feel bad about it. I’m not promoting unhealthy eating habits by any means. I’m simply just trying to explain that sometimes you’re going to eat what makes you happy, regardless of what that is. Obviously maintaining a healthy lifestyle is important, but it’s not more important than your happiness. Eat your Mac n cheese cups, ramen and everything else you want when you want to (my personal fav is @cookout). AND ENJOY IT. - @jabswithlex on Instagram
