The high country in Yosemite is where its at in the summer. Its just too expansive to pass up. When I tracked the sky 2 months ago, I realized that Neowise lines up with El Capitan from Taft Point. The moon was huge but the extra light definitely helps and it honestly didnt bother me, it was quite beautiful to see it start to set. If I had an backpacking permit and maybe not go with a group of people, I would have stayed beyond 11pm to have extra versions of this image to work on but I really cant complain. For a few minutes I was worried though, it rained kinda hard for a few minutes when a low pressure system rolled over us but luckily we were on the outskirts of the storm. We made a trip down to Telluride to check out the brand new Bridal Veil Trail. Previously, hikers had to access the falls by walking up Bridal Veil Road. The new 1.2-mile trail begins at the Idarado Mine parking area and meanders up through the forest and past two smaller waterfalls (each spectacular!) before reaching the base of the roaring Bridal Veil Falls—the tallest free-standing waterfall in Colorado at a formidable 365’. The trickiest part of the hike is following the very beginning of the trail, but I’ve included a photo of a map to help. Note that there’s a creek crossing at 0.35 miles, but it’s pretty easy for all ages and experience levels when the water level is normal. Telluride Mountain Club is working on a bridge that should be completed later this year. Even in its current state, this is an amazing trail, and we highly recommend it! - @coloradohikes on Instagram

Yosemite Valley, my favorite place in the world! • • FUN FACT: Abraham Lincolns and John Muirs passion for preserving and protecting the Sierra Nevada, Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove ecosystem lead to the creation of Yosemite National Park. • President Abraham Lincoln signed the Yosemite Land Grant into law in 1864, giving the Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoia trees to the state of California. (This happened eight years before the establishment of Yellowstone National Park, Americas oldest national park.) Galen Clark was appointed Yosemites first Guardian, a position held for most of the next 35 years. • But state protection of Yosemite Valley and the giant sequoia grove was not enough for conservationist John Muir. In 1868, Muir walked from San Francisco Bay to the Yosemite Valley. Inspired by the natural beauty he found there, Muir soon started writing about Yosemite in magazines and newspapers that reached audiences across the USA. • Muir also wanted to spread the word about the destruction of Yosemites ecosystem that he was witnessing. Despite the parks protected status, he saw meadows being devastated by grazing livestock (which he called hooved locusts), especially in the high country. He also saw widespread deforestation caused by timber logging operations. • Muirs writing and his own personal passion for Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada helped spur a national conservation movement. Muir even escorted groups of influential people on guided trips into Yosemite and the surrounding Sierra Nevada to expound upon the importance of preserving nature. Yesterday’s view from Clouds Rest—Yosemite Valley shrouded in smoke—as captured by LA guide @estradacados during a Three Summits backpacking adventure. There’s no denying that smoke from the California wildfires is taking a toll on our backpacking season. Fortunately the fires themselves remain at bay for the Valley, and depending on the wind direction, the air quality is better some days than others. This week’s forecast calls for wind out of the North, which bodes well for improved air quality in the park, since the fires are burning to the south, and north winds are expected to clear out the smoke. Life is full of surprises, and 2020 has certainly had its share. As we continue to navigate the wildfires, pandemic, economic challenges and other surprises still to come in 2020, remember to take solace in humanity’s likeness to granite. The smoke comes and goes, but the granite remains the same—undiscouraged—marvelous and resilient as ever. When surprises arise, we must emulate the mountains that inspire us. Stay strong, keep climbing, and have faith that when the smoke inevitably clears, the sunshine will be waiting. This is not our first fire season and it won’t be our last. As stewards of the great Sierra Nevada wilderness and the largest, most experienced backcountry guide service in Yosemite, navigating wildfires comes with the territory. It was supposed to be the Telluride Jazz Festival, but, you know...Covid. We both work too much and are terrible at taking time away. Balance, THEY say its good for you. THEY know everything! We decided to still go, enjoy nature, do some hiking, eat lots of food. Bridal Veil Falls was beautiful, we kept at it and found Blue Lake at the top. Breathtaking! Literally- Lol, elevation 12,400 feet. What was supposed to be a little hike turned into an entire day! But we did it! (Yay us🙌) Pizza and beer were well earned! Greg and I were high school sweethearts. I know, I know, disgusting 😅, but hey, its true! Hes still my favorite person in the whole world. Took longer than intended but this is my most recent trip to #brycecanyon #zionnationalpark and #sedona with @p_cudi! The ultimate back yard link up, Cove to Cove round two. Traversing 96km with 8600m of elevation gain from porteau cove to deep cove through the backcountry of the north shore mountains. El Capitan and Bridalveil Fall as the sun just started to come up. 😍 . Man, I miss the first quarter of the year. I did so much exploring and had so much fun. I’ve been experiencing anxiety these past few days. The one thing that eases my mind is my photography and being out in nature. I can remember how I felt taking this photo. I remember the man behind me asking me to move over because I was just a hair in his shot since he had an ultra wide lens. I remember being a little annoyed by it, but not too much. I remember the numbness of my fingers gripping my camera on such a cold, windy morning. I remember losing my lens cap, but also thinking it was too much to move around to search for and I’d do it after the sun came up. I was crouched into myself for warmth. The smells, the sounds, the images. They’re all there and they bring me just a moment of peace. I’m reminded of how comfortable I felt despite how uncomfortable everything was. The log I sat on. The cold air. The photographers zipping by trying to catch first light on El Cap. Play!! Was feeling like a dull human. All work and no play ... Went on a phenomenal sunset hike with good ol fashion fire jam in the Sierra Buttes this past weekend. Yosemite NP is our family’s happy place and I’m so happy we made it to the park a few times this summer. With the recent fires (including one near Yosemite), it makes me really appreciate something we so often take for granted - breathing clean air. Every morning for days on end now, the first thing I do (after the toddler wakes me up yelling, “MAMA, I AWAKE!”x3) is check the air quality. If it’s not good, we don’t get in our morning “stroller walk” where I do intervals and she rides before she gets her turn to stretch her legs. While we may yearn to spend more time outdoors, there are others returning to their property to see if everything is okay, and many others working incredibly hard to contain these fires and keep everyone safe. It’s been a tough year all around, but it absolutely validates our need to have what adventures we may, when and where life allows. An eerie and foggy morning at Yosemite slowly revealed this beauty as the mist lifted. 2017 was such a good travel year. I ran my first half marathon outside of a national forest and spent the rest of that trip in Ahwahnee (now known as Yosemite Valley), the ancestral land of the Ahwahneechee people. Later that summer, we camped in the Santa Fe National Forest and stopped at White Sands, home to the Mescalero Apache, on our drive back home. Though travel doesn’t quite look the same right now, I am patiently waiting for the day I can visit these two sites again. I need to move around every day. Physical challenges are a mental health practice for me as much as a physical one. I’m 37, and I can run 17 miles. I do push-ups. I can do *real* pull-ups when I’m in climbing shape. I feel confident on my feet. I can lift heavy things. My friends call me a jock—me, who quit sports in 5th grade because I was too busy playing violin! I work hard to keep this body strong, and I’m so grateful to it for carrying me through life. If you know me at all, the next few sentences are going to sound incredible, brace for impact. I hiked up the Yosemite Falls Trail. It’s a 12km round trip, has an elevation of about 4000 ft, and takes 6-10hrs. I’m the kind that deputes someone to get me coffee from the pantry on their way back. So if you are wondering why & how I did it, it was sheer ignorance (*jazz hands*). When my friend/travel companion said “let’s go to Yosemite”, I dint quite imagine they meant “go to the top of”. It hit me when I was standing at the base of this huge rock, and I couldn’t see a winch, ski lift, a cable line or any of humankind’s mechanical wonders designed for vertical adventures. So I loaded my friend’s backpack with 3 large bananas (because, food), and pretty much cursing mother nature for creating elevation, went up the trail. I managed to drag myself to about 3/4ths to the top before my lungs had leaked out of sundry orifices, and I decided to roll my way back down. Would I want to do it again? Absolutely! Not for nothing do 4 million people visit Yosemite annually. Would I do it again? Showing our kids the places we’ve climbed, hiked, camped, fell in love was really something I had been looking forward to for so long. Nature based vacations are my dream but the kids loved it and got bored of it too lol. Brek was super thrilled about seeing “another tree” 🤣🤦🏻♀️ But at the end of the trip I feel like they were able to really grasp just how incredible these places are and what an opportunity it was to go there. #PuregoldCEO should be my title for 6 months. . . Why you ask ? First off I send any hike at any time whether I’m sick with the flu or raging with energy healthy as a new born baby. I have the eye 👁 to capture all the epic adventures I would embark on. I have all the necessary skills and gear for a journey such as this. “Yosemite is a place that forces you to discover your true self. When you’re in the presence of such extraordinary scenery, under thousand foot granite walls, you have no choice but to face the reality of just how small your existence is on earth. 🏔 I lived in Yosemite Valley for 7 months. Thinking back on my experience, I realize how each season represented a chapter in my life. I grew as a person along with the changes of the park. Throughout my time there, I laid in bright golden fields under thousand foot walls and found peace. Pushed myself on hikes, not thinking I would even make it to the top. I walked along the river in the morning, not knowing what new places I’d discover along the way. I laid in a snowy meadow and listened to the sounds of the valley at midnight. I drove hours on mountain roads looking for epic sunset locations. From skateboarding in the highway 41 tunnel at 1am to climbing a staircase of rocks above the tree line, and jumping in the freezing Merced... Yosemite gave me some of the best memories of my life. While I was there, I journaled a lot of my thoughts and experiences. The end of my very first entry read: If the sun didn’t set tonight I don’t think anyone would notice. That’s what being in Yosemite feels like. A place where time doesn’t exist if you don’t want it to, and nothing matters if you don’t let it. The magic of Yosemite is undeniable.
