If you thought 2020 was a dumspterfire, wait till you see the coming years! Strangely but not surprisingly, 2020 will be both one of the hottest so far and one of the coldest in this century! The earth broke several records this year from hottest day, highest carbondioxide, a super active hurricane season, record-setting rainfall, flooding, biblical locusts and we haven’t even gotten to the end of the year yet! Phew. That all this is happening is not the surprise, but just that this is happening already is of big concern. It is as if an invisible crank has been turned up, ratcheting up all disasters to suddenly become much higher in both scale and intensity resulting in impacts that were not expected for a couple of more years at least. Needless to say, 2020 has been an eye-opener of a year to all those who were blind to the urgency of climate crisis. In most cases, if you are overheard talking about dropping thousands of live animals from an aircraft in flight, you can expect to be surrounded by some pretty horrified expressions. You can also expect to later be visited by the authorities and placed into custody. There is one exception, however, and it’s what you see here in this video by Jason Clay via YouTube. It’s been taking place in the state of Utah since the 1950s, and to this day, it’s how over 200 remote lakes are restocked with trout. Prior to takeoff, the pilots fill bomb bay containers with young, 1-3in (2.5-7.6 cm) trout. Then, according to plans determined by wildlife biologists, they drop specific amounts of fish into specific remote bodies of water. In the past, fish were loaded into metal milk cans and transported by horse to these lakes. This took several days, requiring careful monitoring of oxygen levels, and many fish wouldn’t survive the journey. Today, each plane can stock seven lakes on one trip and 40-60 lakes in a single day. The fish are released from 100-150ft (30-46m) at approximately 80 kts. Brutal as the experience sounds, the method is less stressful and more survivable for the fish than past methods, with 95-99% of the fish surviving the drop. By comparison, scientists estimate that only 90% of fish in the Niagara river survive the 165 foot (50m) drop over Niagara Falls…a study that must have been particularly interesting to conduct. I like to imagine a scenario in which a screwup of epic proportions is made and the fish tanks are somehow mixed up with firefighting slurry. As the fish water is dropped over the raging wildfires, fleeing wildlife and firefighters on the ground are pleasantly baffled as thousands of freshly-cooked, aromatic trout begin falling at their feet, a delicious reprieve from the stress of the wildfire. This year, Utah wildlife officials are aerial stocking 380,000 fish into 330 mountain lakes. Hopefully similar methods of restocking aren’t utilized to address dwindling populations of deer, moose, or other large mammals…although, the way 2020 is going, it would seem fitting for thousands of angry wolverines to suddenly rain down upon us from the heavens. - @cessnateur on Instagram
