The idea that lactic acid causes a burning sensation and/or fatigue during high-intensity exercise is one of the most common misnomers in fitness. This idea is based on the assumption that there is an immediate dissociation of lactic acid into lactate and H+ when produced by glycolysis in skeletal muscle. However, the phosphoglycerate kinase reaction transfers a phosphate and leaves a carboxyl group, and no proton exists to dissociate from lactate - furthermore, the lactate dehydrogenase reaction actually consumes protons, which in turn alkalizes the cell. So where does this burning sensation and fatigue really come from? The hydrolysis of ATP outside of the mitochondria itself (myosin ATPase), is directly contributing to the H+ accumulation in the cell - this process is called metabolic acidosis. Now how about fatigue? Metabolic acidosis (H+ accumulation) is thought to reduce the intracellular pH - inhibiting glycolytic reactions and also directly interfering with muscle excitation coupling by possibly inhibiting calcium binding to troponin or by interfering with cross-bridge recycling. Two take homes here: 1) Lactic acid is not the cause of that burning sensation we are all familiar with when we exercise. 2) I have way too much time on my hands after graduating! JK - Im actually studying for my CSCS right now and hope to sit for the exam in a month, so I will be periodically sharing other fun and possibly useful facts throughout the entire process. I also plan on sharing other training concepts that are easier to digest and much more practical.
