- An update to my last post, I made it 40 hrs and 39 mins. Lost 3 pounds according to the scale! 😃🥳
- I finally did it :)
Breathing Cycle . . . It was a 15 mins cycle on the BikeErg at damper 4, with a goal to maintain between 70-75rpm. Had my eyes on the HR monitor and found a few interesting observations. . . . Whenever I tried to take deep inhale from the feeling of suffocation, my rpm drops and my heart rate will spike. But as soon I as go back to quick sips of air and long exhale, the heart rate stopped rising or even dropped, and I had an easier time keeping the rpm above 70. This explains the dips in HR even though the output was fairly consistent, with the rpm never dropping below 69 or rising above 75 over the 15 mins. . . . Slightly passed the 11th min mark, I was in the zone. Found a good pace with breathing and I was averaging at 74rpm, the higher end of target range during that period. It’s amazing how the changes can be felt when there is a focus and control over breathing. . . . Looking forward to my second run this week! - @ironpillarstrength on Instagram

Had the unique opportunity to photograph Bison in a natural habitat in Minnesota recently. The family took a trip to Minneopa State Park, which has a Bison preserve that you can drive through. This photo was taken out the back window of our SUV as we slowly moved passed a Bison hard hanging out near a water hole. A very memorable experience for sure. If you haven’t seen this video by now you really need to check it out. I interviewed the videographer, Betsy Judson, this morning and it was cool to hear about this wild situation firsthand. A 600-pound grizzly fighting a 700-pound elk is not something you see every day. Betsy told me she only started her YouTube channel to share her experiences with her grandchildren and so they would have a record of her once she’s gone—not for any notoriety. Not many grandmothers I know spend four months straight sleeping in a tent at night and shooting photos and video of wildlife all day. It was a very fun conversation. This is a “fight or flight” response which is the body’s way of making sure we have the energy available to make it out of this intense situation no matter what. . *Glucose spikes from high intensity exercise are very different physiologically from spikes caused by sugary foods.* . Both kinds of exercise have their place and are demonstrated to have health benefits including improved insulin sensitivity for long periods afterward. . A great reminder on #ShareSaturday from @nationalparkservice No selfies with the fluffy cows. Every park is unique and has specific guidelines, including wildlife viewing distances and food storage requirements. Before you head out, take a few minutes to review the park’s rules. Keep your eyes on the road. Be sure to follow the speed limit and watch for wildlife that may dart into the road, be “fighting” with a rival across a road (see prior post), or just walking down the road because they can. I’m walkin’ here!!! Give animals room. Stay a minimum of 25 yards from most wildlife and 100 yards from bears and wolves. If you’re close enough for a selfie, (well, good luck with that) you’re definitely too close. Use a zoom lens and move back if wildlife approach you. Do not disturb. It’s illegal to feed, touch, tease, frighten, or intentionally disturb wildlife. Remember that wildlife in parks are wild and can be unpredictable when they’re disturbed or surprised. When they have a monetary valve and are a big part of kiwis lives? These animals kept me in a job the past 6 years and many more people, which doc took money for each trophy to help keep animals at a good level. Where are the lefty’s? The animal rights people? Shooting them down with helicopters because a few people in parliament think they effect the alpine areas? Yes hunters agreed they need culled... but now they want to kill the lot... Things need to change, and siting back isn’t going to help! Heres a Feel Good Friday for you from Crane Trust Bison Coordinator Jacob Salter: Every once in awhile we come across an unexpected calf on the Crane Trust property. By that, I mean a calf born outside of the usual months that our calves are born (March through June). This year we have one of these unexpected calves who was born on August 31st. There are a number of different circumstances that can lead to a calf being born in the fall or winter. It might be that the mother is a young heifer that wasn’t quite mature during the normal rut, she may have been a fall calf herself, or maybe she was ill during the rut that caused a delay. Whatever the reason may be, the result seems to remain the same - a healthy baby! The fall is actually a good time for calves to be born. The weather begins to cool down, the flies start to disappear, and the rut is winding down. This calf will have a great opportunity to grow big and strong and find its place in the herd with the other calves. This year an unexpected calf is a welcome sight. Tushar’s Mountain 100km race in Utah was definitely a difficult one over the Wknd. Every Ultra is tough and unique- each offer variations of perspectives, obstacles and challenges- this one, was of course a hard course. Around 18,000 ft of climbing all above 10,000ft in elevation through 61 miles- exposed sun at midday, its labeled as brutiful. It was beautiful, it was brutal. From Sunrise to Sunset, through rolling meadows of wild flowers and into the dark of a moon lit crossing through the finish-line past 12am. Shades of Pine forest, streams and snow drifts cooled off the day, scree slopes and trodden trails provided much ambience to the antiquity of any mountain range. I would have been in Austria at this same time if things were different this year, doing a mountain race in Grossglockner Mountains, Austrian alps, a comparable effort was sought. I don’t listen to music or check the phone- these efforts are usually for the needed solace of meditation and metaphorical journey in life- a chance to reflect and refine my physical and spiritual strengths. The race operated by @aravaiparunning was modified with Covid guidelines and new restrictions working with the State to ensure safety amongst participants / staff. We started in waves of 8 with 6ft distancing at the mask required start- then your off- masks at aid stations and so forth. I’m stoked for the effort and stoked to have had the beautiful company of @hoorayley who also completed her first trail half, congrats on crushing it! Thank you for the immense support, encouragement, company and conversations. The trip was a fast out and back- with much reflection & inspiration, linking up with @rickeygates along the way for a delivery and shared run to summit Mount Baldy before heading to Utah was an added bonus to it all. I can say I have my share of Mountain time in, coming from Oklahoma, it was needed. The challenge was needed as were the climbs- as I say a lot that we must climb the metaphorical mountains to achieve our best outcomes and selves, literally I told myself this to see through and find strengths to the finish line, it’s done. - My activity when my grandad had suddenly passed away from cancer. 23rd of Feb was when they let him come home for his last week. He slept in a bed upstairs (you can see how much I climbed his stairs). 1st was the day after he passed, where I paced his room a lot and didn’t go downstairs much.

Both Poppy and Forrest had a difficult time walking when they arrived at the sanctuary. With the love and support the sanctuary staff, veterinarians, and each other, they have gotten so much better.
