It takes a large, flat piece of aluminium that, when strung by a single cable, warps under the weight of its own expanse. It distils the massive trade relationship between Australia and Japan – stretching back over a century – into a single gesture. Nueva corbeta llegará a Colombia para fortalecer las operaciones Marítimas En la Base Naval de Jinhae, República de Corea, se llevó a cabo la ceremonia de transferencia de la Corbeta “Almirante Tono” a la @armadacolombia, como parte de la importante relación de amistad y cooperación que han tenido las dos naciones por más de seis décadas. La Armada de Colombia inició el proyecto de transferencia del buque tipo Patrol Combat Corvette – PCC 768, de la República de Corea, siendo este el segundo buque que Corea le transfiere al país, tras haber incorporado en el año 2013 el ARC “Nariño”. La Corbeta se incorporará a la Institución Naval con el nombre de ARC “Almirante Tono”, héroe nacional de la República de Colombia, siendo este el segundo al mando de la escuadra que triunfó en la Batalla del Lago de Maracaibo a orden del Almirante José Prudencio Padilla López el 24 de Julio de 1823, victoria que fue crucial para la independencia de nuestro país. Lake Tillery Boat Parade 2020 June 13th. Starts at 11 a.m. The leading boats will be out in the main channel near Hydro Dam end of the lake around 8:30 a.m. D.J. Dean will start playing music on the Stanly County side of the lake around 9 a.m. At 10:50 a.m. we will take a drone video and pictures. Lets display our flags. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 The parade will begin and travel to the Morrow Mountain end of Lake Tillery. Were going to travel at a cruising speed that is safe for everyone. Please spread out so you are not close to other boats. After we reach that end of the lake turn around in your designated location and whoever is in the rear takes over as lead for the trip back to Hydro! *Dont forget Friday night there will be a **Pre Parade celebration **bluegrass concert** in the last cove on Stanly County side before Hydro Damn. A Swedish company, Wallenius Marine, joined the revolution as it announced last week plans to build a sleek-looking wind-powered car and truck carrier ship that can haul 7,000 vehicles at a time. The ship, named Oceanbird, will sport five 260-foot retractable sails composed of metal and composite materials. The sails can be lowered to 66 feet to pass under bridges or accommodate changing wind conditions. Upon completion, the 650-foot-long, 130-foot-wide ship will hold the distinction of being the worlds largest sailing vessel. The Oceanbird can travel at an average speed of 10 knots. That is a bit slower than conventional vessels, but cruising with the wind means it can eliminate emissions by 90 percent. When asked why the company was willing to share so many details about construction of the ship, Tunell replied, It is not a competition, but rather a direction we all need to take. By being transparent in the process, we want to inspire others to test the limit to what is possible… We need to make a change and it just cant wait anymore. Tunell also noted that he has been asked about what some see as a contradiction: an environmentally ambitious effort at transportation that ironically will transport polluting automobiles. Tunell said, The car industry is going through a major transition as well, and it is moving fast. I would say they are way ahead of the general shipping industry and I am convinced that cars of the future will have significantly less, or even zero emissions from their operation. Oceanbird is matching what many car manufacturers are doing perfectly. SSPA and the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm on the Oceanbird project, built a small-scale model of the ship and will be testing it in sea waters over the next few months. A completed design should be ready by the end of next year and the first ship should be ready to sail before 2025. What sport is more of an emotional rollercoaster than offshore racing? We congratulate @goodchildsam and Leyton on the incredible performance in the Solitaire du Figaro, riding that rollercoaster and finishing a solid 17th place overall. More noteworthy however is the 2nd place in leg 2, the best result a non-French sailor has achieved in the 51 years of this annual race. We kept a close eye on Sam’s performance on the race tracker, always close to the leaders and moving up the rankings. He led for much of leg 3, sailing through challenging tidal waters and unpredictable holes in the wind. In the last 30 miles of a 500mile leg, the wind died, and rankings moved inside out. Boats from miles back sailed around to the front and our consistent leaders like Sam had to wait to join the back. The time differences were punishing for Sam, but we were very impressed with his standout performance this year. #SCOOP PARISIEN# Bon c’est la rentrée ! Je vais pas vous cacher que pendant les travaux cet été, on s’est posé beaucoup de questions. On sait que l’année va être compliquée en mer (Brexit, surstock chez les acheteurs, exportations au point mort). Ca gambergeait pour anticiper tout ça. Comme vous êtes souvent de bon conseil, cela faisait un moment que pas mal d’entre vous nous soumettait l’idée d’avoir (enfin) un lieu fixe. Parce que nomade c’est sympa, mais on était arrivé un peu à bout. Du coup, on vous a écouté et voilà qu’on nous a proposé un local, un lieu bien à nous à Paris. Un endroit où on pourrait, partager, sensibiliser, vendre et vous faire à manger, déguster, se marrer. Du coup, on a dit OUI. On va l’avoir ce lieu de partage. Cette épicerie de la mer, guinguette et apéro de la mer. En plein Paris. On garde un peu le secret pour le lieu et le jeune chef engagé qui nous accompagne (on vous autorise à envoyer les paris). On est tout ému parce qu’en plus ce serait pour octobre. Pile l’ouverture de la coquille dis-donc !!!!! Mais, on a quand même un peu besoin de vous, de vos bonnes intentions. Pour aménager ce lieu, on organise un crowdfunding sur la plateforme @miimosa_fr (spécialisé dans les projets alimentaires). On a essayé d’y mettre des contreparties un peu sympas même si on ne vous remerciera jamais assez. Je vous laisse le lien ici et dans la bio 😘. Voilà ça c’est pour les nouveautés. We were fortunate to be able to tag along recently on a photo shoot for one of Chuck Paine’s latest designs, the Paine 15. A cold-molded descendent of the Herreshoff 12 ½, the Paine 15 has a fin keel, carbon fiber mast, and separate rudder. Despite a light wind, the lovely little yacht zoomed around Megunticook Lake in Camden, Maine, showing off her pretty hull and maneuverability. The mast does not require stays and the boat, which weighs just 1,000 pounds, is designed to be easily trailerable. The boats are being built to order by French & Webb in Belfast, Maine. Happy Friday everyone! We’re watching the fleet arrive here at HMM for our annual Herreshoff regatta and contemplating vessels past that once sailed by our waterfront. First up, the 1895 America’s Cup Defender DEFENDER (HMCo. #452) arrived and departed this week 125 years ago for a new mast and some rig repairs after losing her gaff in the Goelet Cup race of August 2, 1895. Then we have some strange eagle hunting trivia for you, and (weirdly) a lot of flag pole coverage this week too. Finally, we have the usual assortment of beautiful steam yachts coming and going - EUGENIA II (HMCo. #182) with the clipper bow and MAGNOLIA (HMCo. #104) with the plumb stem, both photographed by Stebbins in 1899 and 1892 respectively. Aeolus was built in San Diego, California in 1904, she is an extreme plank-on-edge design (narrow beam, very deep draft, V shaped in section with all the ballast inside the boat). The designer is unknown but Kunhardt developed a GL Watson inspired rig. Originally she was raced successfully and later was used for chartering. She was re-built in 1982-3 with the keelson as the only original piece of timber left. She is double planked in cedar to the waterline with light timbers of iron wood. The topsides are fir and the deck is triple planked finished in Port Orford cedar. She was imported into the UK in 2003 and in five years had three owners who improved her but did little sailing as her spars and sail plan was over-canvassed. This resulted in excessive weather helm and an un-seaworthy boat. Anthony Wheaton purchased her in 2008 and is continuing her improvement. He has replaced the over-canvassed rig which had a boom that overhung the counter by 10ft with a balanced sail plan designed by Ed Burnett.
