Annabel Denton, 17, has blogged for us about her early journey in modern pentathlon, experiencing the Youth Olympic Games in Argentina, how she juggles training for five disciplines, adjusting to life in lockdown and the future ambitions she’s striving to achieve ⬇️ . “From an early age I really enjoyed swimming but got invited to a modern pentathlon training camp at Plymouth College - my current school - and learned so much about what the sport comprised. I really liked how it’s so different and the five sports element really created a unique sense of variety. I fell in love with the sport from the start. I did a few early competitions but didn’t really put any pressure on myself as I know you can have a long career in the sport and you can peak at an older age. . “I started improving over the years, and a key highlight for me was placing first in a Youth Olympic Games qualifier in Portugal in 2018. But my biggest highlight was the Youth Olympic Games itself in Buenos Aires in 2018 - it was an unforgettable experience. I came eighth in the individual event and fifth in the relay despite being the youngest competitor in the field. It whet the appetite to hopefully compete in the real thing one day! It was a little teaser for what the Olympics will be like. . “Pentathlon’s given me a role and purpose in life - I’m able to live my dream, and it’s so good for both my mental and physical health. It’s so refreshing and takes my mind off the pressures of school and life in general. It’s given me more confidence because I used to be a very shy person. I’ve grown because of the sport and it’s enabled me to travel to so many countries and has given me a lot of independence. So #WTSHamburg is this weekend. It looks like we’re actually going to race! . I’ve been on the fence about racing for many reasons, the biggest being that I took a long break during lockdown.. (and then I ate it running, and took another break 🙄). Had an off and on niggle the last year or so, and decided it was the perfect time to let the body rest. . Un’avventura unica: partiti con la pioggia, entrati nella nebbia, attraversato pietraie con 30 cm di neve in piena notte...e ce ne sarebbe per scrivere un libro. Volevo una gara tosta...l’ho tanto aspettata in questo 2020...e finalmente l’ho fatta. Un grazie di cuore a tutti i “bénévoles” che mi hanno accolto con il loro sorriso sul percorso 😜e a @julienvoeffray che ha ideato tutto ciò permettendomi di vivere questi 3 giorni che non dimenticherò mai🙏. Un ringraziamento alla mia sorellina che ancora una volta mi ha seguito nelle basi vita e a Giudy (che prima di fare la sua di gara 🥇) mi ha fatto assistenza. Ho trovato un avversario tosto che con il passare dei km è diventato un grande amico😊...fino al punto da decidere negli ultimi km di tagliare insieme il traguardo...e sapete che non è da me. Bear Lake Brawl. Part 1 of 2. . Yesterday’s race was an interesting feel. Being a local, grassroots race dealing with restrictions due to COVID, it felt different than normal, but so familiar at the same time. For example, when you normally get hand-ups on many aid stations on the bike, aid stations were sparse with a serve-yourself protocol. Where pros have designated racking, men and women were racked together among other athletes. When there’s generally a lot of people on course cheering, most of the day was silence caught in your own thoughts. . Yet, the race was familiar because it reminded me of the feel of being scrappy and having a “deal with it and do what it takes” attitude. And while the race felt smaller than normal, it felt like there was so much on the line. And that’s how I raced.... . Sometimes in life we partake in unexplainable adventure, leading with gut and instinct, ultimately yielding much clarity along the way. This past weekend I partook in a continuous 500mi bike ride (moving time 28 hours elapsed time 38 hours) with my coguide @maxermann and a bunch of legends from @alumnuscycling What was once just a long bike ride for the sake of riding bikes turned into a fundraiser promoting access and diversity within cycling. Working in the cycling industry, lack of diversity is apparent. If you feel so inclined, please donate to the link in my bio, promoting opportunity for high school mountain bikers. Last weekend I was racing at the Sky Running world championships in Kinlochleven Scotland. It was an absolute privilege to be a part of this team and represent the USA. 5 years ago I won the overall female title at Ironman Lake Tahoe. The announcer asked me after I broke the tape “Did you ever think you would win an overall Ironman title” and I said “yes, you have to believe to achieve” which is what Coach Muddy taught me. See coach and I would train for Kona in Tahoe and Coach married his wife, who we call Coach B in Tahoe. The whole race I was surrounded by my training family who tracked my lead, ran all over the course to see me at different spots, and gave me encouragement when I slowed down. When I broke the tape, Coach Muddy was standing on a little retaining wall behind the finish. This photo was the moment I saw him. We both knew how special the day was. We were both in our element. RACE PACERS SHINE! The race season ended abruptly with two races left in the Nissan State Series, we were primed to do well and it was disappointing to miss out. Triathlon Queensland recently updated the Individual point score for the state-wide series as it finished and it revealed that the Race Pace squad had secured the most series winners and more podium finishes than any other club. This is a significant accomplishment given that our club still fits the small club membership in being under 50 in numbers and are competing against all clubs including the largest clubs in the State in those races. It was also just our 3rd year since affiliation. We had 11 podiums with 6 first placings in all across the age-groups. Coaches, Jacque and Pete, wish to extend our congratulations to all of those that managed to finish on the podium and indeed our 6 winners. To say we are proud of you is an understatement and this applies too for those that gave their all and missed the podium. Your performances were just as impressive and the enthusiasm, team spirit and commitment to training by all of our members has been exceptional! Thank you! Sometimes they suggest we take time off to heal. • My question was: Why is mental health any different? I had to admit to myself: I am broken, I need help, and I need to take some time away in order to heal. So I did. • I am in love with the person I am becoming. And when the time comes to step back on the starting line, I will be more powerful than ever. CUT DOWN ON COMPARISON AND EMBRACE THE CHANGE. • Everyone has a different journey and different story. Own yours and try to avoid the temptation to compare to others. Each individual’s unique story is like a book. It is a waste of energy to compare to someone else that could be living chapter 10 in their book when you may be at chapter 2 in yours. Everyone is at a different part of their own unique story. Don’t rush your journey, but instead embrace the whole process. • Particularly in the world of body image, comparison is extremely detrimental. Focus on what works for you. Everyone has different fueling needs, training needs, and bodies. The proper fuel you need to support your own training is going to look different than your friend or teammate. Being healthy and strong looks different for everyone. • Challenge your mind. What someone looks like in an Instagram photo isn’t the whole story. What someone eats at one dinner isn’t an accurate picture of their fueling. What a professional athlete looks like after 10+ years of sport likely isn’t what they looked like in high school or college. I wasted a lot of unnecessary energy in college comparing myself to professional runners that were running at an elite level for over half my life and were at a very different part of their journey with different hormone levels in their bodies. Cut down on the comparison with yourself too. I have learned that what is healthy for me now is not what I looked like in the past. Own your story and your body. I’m not the same girl now as I was in this photo... I look different I feel different My mindset is different But most importantly, I am happier than the girl I was before. Yes, feeling slow and heavy from gaining about 18 lbs of muscle and necessary weight is very challenging mentally and physically when trying to get back into shape. And even seeing my paces makes me feel disappointed and discouraged. BUT I know deep down that if I want to have a future with running, taking time fully off and adding this weight was very necessary and will be worth it in the end. I am happier because I am letting go of my fears and trusting God through this whole process. I am happier because I am healthier, I can laugh more, and enjoy training and working towards getting back to where I was. The old me did not truly enjoy or embrace my training, leaving me burned out from pushing too hard, grinding every day, stressing out about every little thing in my training, and under-fueling all at the same time. Both of my stress fractures have been my fault and I am taking full responsibility. However, every day is a new day and it’s a day to grow, get better, and fall in love with the journey of running rather than hating it. I have to admit that my confidence is way low right now, but I know I can get through this and I want to encourage others that are going through any adversity to keep fighting. Know that you are not alone and keep your faith in the Lord and you will get through anything!! I may not run the times I want this year or perform the way I want, but I can’t change the outcomes. I will just keep doing my very best and that’s all that matters. This year is going to be a season of rebuilding, getting used to running again, and being smarter about all aspects of my training. I will keep working and remember where I have come from. Lastly, I just want to remind everyone to remember how blessed you are to be able to run, or do whatever passion that drives you. Stay determined, fearless, and put all of your worries aside. Know that there is more to life than your sport, passion, or hobby. Use your gifts to glorify our amazing creator. 4th place at my first USATF sanctioned race (US “road” 1 mile Champs), a lil mile PB at 4:33, and a 63 second last lap!!! I’m excited about this, but more proud of my approach to this day. I was internally a mess until the gun went off— it’s a long story but we admitted my grandma to the ER, just 36 hours prior, for a bad fall. She is more stable now🙏, but at the time, I didn’t know if I’d make it to the starting line. Well, as you probably know, I did make it to the starting line. I felt pretty emotionally/physically tired, as one would; but did my best to keep nudging myself back to the controllable— attitude and effort. When the gun went off, for the first time in the past 36 hours, during those 4 and a half minutes that I was racing, my mind was finally quiet. My body went into competition mode and I just ran as hard as I could on the day. My Grandma watched the race from the ER and apparently that was as first time she smiled since being admitted❤️. Running is so much more than a sport, it’s a way a coping with life, practicing resiliency, processing emotion, and staying present. I sometimes wonder about those serious little gymnasts on TV who perform unfalteringly for millions and then retire at age 18. What happens next? . I bet that for as long as they live, they find comfort in the uneven bars. I bet, even if their careers were full of pain, that they explain the world back to themselves using the lessons they learned with chalk on their hands. . My story is much less extreme than the little Russian gymnasts’. But from age 14 until I retired from elite competition at age 30, running dictated my life: I ran twice a day, 100 miles a week. I followed coaches across the country and lived out of suitcases for months a year. I always knew my national ranking, and I knew I’d be fired if it fell too low. . I’ve been booed. I’ve received hate mail. I’ve had the worst moments of my life replayed in slo-mo on national TV. I’ve been screamed at by coaches, told I was broken. I heard my bone crack through mid-race. Ive pulled out my own toenails. . I’ve also been cheered on by 20,000 screaming fans. I’ve been paid to do nothing but run. I’ve received letters from fans I’ve reread a hundred times and can still send my heart into my throat. . Now, two years removed from my career, there are things I understand more and things I understand less about what running was to me then, and what it is to me now. This is what I’m sure of: The goofy exhaustion at the back of the bus is what best friends feel like. I need mentors who are direct and honest, even when it hurts us both. I’ve got no patience for time wasting, patronizing or excuses. I believe if I haven’t worked, hurt, cried and bled for something I don’t really deserve it. I believe in the power of one human’s will to prove every social, physical and fiscal predictor wrong. I believe that I am not a winner, but rather a fighter. I believe that is something to be embraced. . People ask if I carry scars from those years. The answer is yes. I can see the scars of a hundred thousand miles on these legs. I can feel them in the craggy calcium deposits on my now-healed bones. But scarred tissue is tough. I am scarred, and so I am fortified. - @justrunjulia on Instagram

This weekend I ran my last 2 high school races ever. At nationals I was All American in both of my races, running 14:29 in the 5000m for 3rd and then 9:06 in the 2 mile for 2nd. The last 4 years of running have been crazy and I never couldve imagined things would go the way they did. I got to win league titles and makes state finals with my team for four straight years. I got to run in national level meets all around the country. I went from a heartbreaking experience at XC states my senior year to coming back and winning an indoor track state title 4 months later. I won a lot of races and made a lot of my best friends through this sport. Im grateful for all of the people Ive gotten to meet and compete with during my career for making me the person I am today. My coaches, family, teamates, and many of the other runners Ive met made this the most enjoyable experience of my life. Theres been so many things over these past years that Ill never forget. The memories Ive made with my teamates during practices, meets, and camp (RIP camp) have been amazing. Ive valued every JV chant, states trip, couch heist, Distance_Bois post, and Team Christmas™. Its been a crazy four years and Im so excited to get to spend four more years running at my dream school, the University of Michigan. Ive had the best supporters in the world over the past few years and I couldnt have accomplished anything without you all. Our world is struggling right now. Each day presents a new and difficult challenge to face. This is a time that we need to embrace and commit to helping each other conquer another obstacle, get over another hurdle and aspire to be empathetic and grateful for what we have. Most recently, we devoted our time and presented our reasoning as to why we believe our local high school Cross Country teams should have the competitive season that they were hoping for, in a safe and healthy way. Last night however, our school board voted to approve a plan that would keep all of our athletes from taking part in competitive sports with other schools. And while we agree that the safety of our athletes, staff and the community at large should be our first concern, it doesn’t make accepting this decision any easier. As I sit here at a loss for words with a feeling of emptiness blanketing me, I am reminded that Cross Country is so much more than a season of competition. We work hard together and celebrate each other when we accomplish our goals. We keep our chins up and hold our heads high when the chips are down. We are warriors and fighters and we will become closer than ever. We will get through this together. We are a family. I am fortunate enough to coach this team of amazing girls and boys. We have had an incredible summer of training and will continue to do so. Safely. On our beloved course. Together. Pictures from the Labor Day Showdown yesterday, put on by @forwardspineandsport , Brian Tabb and @elainatabb (newly minted meet director- powerhouse duo). Had a rare thing happen yesterday- I ran a race that felt good! Time wasn’t something I was thinking about (ran 15:41), but I have been in a very long-term search of any signs at all that I can “race” a 5k (not just survive and finish). Yesterday was a race where I stopped looking a the clock half way through, started racing people around me, and finished trying to beat people. This is an easy thing find when you’re on a roll, but seems almost impossible to attain when you’re way off. Heading into a few months of (maybe) no races, a mental boost like this couldn’t have come at a better time. The day was extra special because of people! Two covid tests, temperature checks, masks, and awful facial recognition abound made it possible for my running people to be around! Always up for good warm up/cool down/sitting around chats at track meets. Extra special to have @platinumpt_ma trackside for a good race after all the work they’ve done to keep me on my feet! I can’t put into words how lucky I feel to have the chance to be racing against such fast women here in Puerto Rico. This is my first year as a u23 racing against the Elite women. I ended up taking 5th today in a hot, humid, and muddy race. One year ago today, we opened up the cyclocross season in Roanoke. I was able to edge @kerryw24 out on opening day, but he fired back quick on day two. That weekend foreshadowed what would be an awesome rivalry for the remainder of the domestic season.
